It's hard to imagine that an instrument as small as the Kala U-Bass can churn out such convincing bass tones. These Ukulele-sized basses give players a whole new way to get down with acoustic, electric and acoustic-electric variations. In this demo, our pal Rob Scallon plucks, slaps and taps his way all up and down the Kala U-Bass and shows us what this little package has in store.
rare rob scallon without hat
Luus Aaltonen don't steal pls
yah. weird!
2019 update, Rob Scallion with hair !
Lasse Aaltonen He still had some hair back then
Very rare
Surprised at how good the acoustic tone is
i don't know, I think the strings sound too round to me... Still amazing what they've managed to accomplish though
holy shit its the punk cover guy
You deef?
thanks for doing the unplugged "bedroom level." that's what i was wanting to hear.
i seen a live band use a ukelele bass few weeks ago and the deep tones blew my mind.
A thing I learned with these is tuning them. DO NOT just turn the knob. No difference will be heard. You have to make large turns, and then lift up the strings. If you just turn it, it will damage the bass and will frick up a tuner. Let’s just say I that learned the hard way. Luckily I got it fixed by a professional.
do you make the large turns, and then lift the string? or at the same time?
@@Specket I've always done it by turning, then pulling up. me from 3 years ago was a bit overbearing about the largeness of the turns, just turn a bit more than you would a normal guitar.
@@eliptikstudios8996 ok thank you so much! you may have just saved my Ubass :)
@@Specket no problem
I played one of these at a guitar center once. I was astonished at how much it sounded like an electric bass.
I want to hear ace of spades on this thing
Someone play Holy Wars on this thing
play and justice for al- oh wait
@@Leo-rm1qn hahahaha /m\
Got one and love it! Not really into that clicky attack you get with the tone control up, I prefer to keep the tone wound back about half and pick closer to the bridge when I want less low end.
1:30 Can you imagine big, lanky Roger Waters playing that on stage? lol
1:43 kinda sounds like rollerbladin'
maybe he had this idea for years
I know your comment is old but he's actually talked about that lick in some of his competition videos and how it's in a lot of his songs.
As a Pixies fan, I'd like to play U-Mass with a U-Bass
It's educationaaaal...
That is amazing, its great to be alive at this time, I'm seeing things I never dreamed could be.
But does it Djent?
mayb
In Rob's hands even mayonnaise djents
lol, I didn’t know it was Rob Scallon in the beginning.
wow, that's incredible. i became curious because i encountered a ukulele bass at a music shop today and had never heard of one. i may wind up with one in the future! they're quite enchanting.
You can really hear those rubber bands. Sweet.
The sound the mic was picking up was was much better. I would probably try to blend the tones to keep some of the weird rubber, but rely mostly on the ldc tone.
2019: i might as well recommend this before 2020
Paolo Scacco ikr
It’s really shocking how fast rob lost he’s hair
Excellent demo-- thanks very much!
I'd love to get one! Just wish they were a little bit cheaper tho :-/
Same :/
Holy shit they really sound great!
Totally didn't recognize him without the hat until he started talking. That's what I get for not reading the video title.
I want tabs for that last riff!
I want that last riff to be a full song!
Sounds too rubbery...
You can use round wound
You can use round wounds if you want a modern sound, this is more like an upright
Wow I absolutely adore this and I need one immediately lmao
Damn I gotta save up a lot for this bad boy!
you have a good taste in music sir :)
pretty metal
very nice
Super fun to play, sounds WAAAY to muddy. Absolutely no clarity, acoustically kinda fixes it
Use round wound strings
Rob Scallon works at reverb??!?!???! Cool!
He doesn't, he just did a demo.
It sounds sweet.
This U Bass is awesome. I would like to have one next time I have enough money.
Money 1:30
Definitely shines more when not amped! Just my opinion so please don’t kill me lol
This guy is gnarly
Can you please do a video demo after changing the strings/pitch to GCEA? I would love to get one of these but not have to relearn all the chording for self-accompaniment. I don't really play the melodies, since I sing them.
:) I'd like to hear what it sounds like before investing, though.
Does it djent m8
As soon as I get one, I am going to attempt djenting on it.
1:31
Money Pink Floyd haha
Sounds like rubber bands against a garbage can.
Clem Yoakal and that’s based
Pretty much 🤷🏽♂️
😂👌
That wrist angle at 2:30 cannot be good for you 🥶😱
yea but does it slap
Roooob, Mah boi
Hello, excelent review!!!
What is the exact model of that Kala U-Bass?
Thanks.
I have small hands and a brain condition that doesn’t allow me to reach my arms out far but I really want to play bass, this might actually give me the option! Only thing is being disabled means I’m too poor to afford it but maybe I can save up and get one in a few years
But I don't get it. Why get a U-bass? I mean you can kinda get an upright sound for peanuts, but isn't that about it? It's useless as an acoustic instrument. What do youtube U-bass'ers say? What do you use it for?
I still want on though. Just really don't know why :D
Don't think it has any practical use just a cool instrument
freeradicalpanda because they're tiny!! much easier to carry around than a regular size bass
I think it's really useful, I study in another city and I am forced to leave my bass guitar at home, so I never get the chance to practise during the week. This bass would definitely give me that opportunity
As you said, upright like sound, convenient size for travel, acoustic so you can practice without an amp, but some are acoustic - electric and people gig with them. They aren't half bad.
ROB SCALLON!
Hey! How would you rate the Luna Bari-Bass Fretless in comparison to the Kala Fretless? I picked up the Luna since its a 100$ cheaper than the cheapest Kala fretless (which is 400$ currently). I do love the look of the Luna Bari Bass - it has a nice laminated Koa which I believe reflects sound well. However, I am still in a position to return it and maybe pick up a Kala (Though that is quite a headache, as it is going to be a good 100 bucks more) - . What do you suggest ?PS This is my first experience with the Bass of any kind. Thanks :)
Hey Rob I am a bass range singer. I have to tune my guitar down to b to match my voice. I tried one of these basses but I was unable to tune it down. Can you get fatter strings for b tuning?
Probably. They sell 5-string versions with a low B.
can you conect it to any amp?
+Blurry cat Yes you can.
+Reverb.com ok thanks
Telakreistewe Xdxdxd they had an amp mic'd up :P
He literally mentioned that he was playing through an amp.
stupid question is stupid.
i was hoping he was going to play A Collapse (if it was possible)
If anyone is interested, here is the "Original" Kala Ubass Ebook: payhip.com/b/4I8q
I wanna hear him play ravioli on it
Guitar player picks up U-Bass.
Plays chords.
1nterest1ng bass players also play chords man
I would know, I do that.
2:07 dat chord
I have a Kala U-Bass but you cannot use on a gig: the 2 small 3V batteries are too weak, just lasts for half an hour. What a waste of money as well. Why didn't they build it with a normal 9V block? Very disappointing!
Can you slap it?
As a bassist, I think it doesn't sound that good tbh.
As a bassist, I think it depends on how it is used.
As a bassist, I think it sounds awesome, especially with a treble cut.
As a bassist, I don't get a solo :(
As not a bassist, it looks cool and i lokey want one but i dont want to make a terrible decision buying one
As a bassist I think it sounds like an acoustic bass with rubber strings
What’s the riff at the beginning?
Is it normal I can't seem to do slides on the E and A strings ? Is there a problem with my strings ?
Unnnnnn nice
So does it work as a acoustic instrument as well?
godzilla12332 yes
cool. Cause i tried a traditional acoustic bass and could barley hear myself play with out a amp
godzilla12332 yeah I was at the music shop and tried some acoustic basses and I could barely hear myself unless I was using fender bass, I tried the kala bass and it sounds beautiful and amplifies itself with the hollow body ( I think it's because of the rubber strings)
which exact model is this? i need one but the wanderer is the only one i can currently afford 😬
They always say "same range" but play it, as would everything below 80 Hz be illegal
Wich one do you like more? this one or the Hutch? Why?
this new version ubass runs with battery now. i don't really like what kala did by adding this... which means if you forget to bring extra batteries and the battery went out, your sound is out. i'm glad i got the first gen ubass. no battery needed.
doesnt that just mean you dont need an amp for it?
the u bass is made in Germany bremen
For a kala u bass , orange or ampeg?
Fuckin crusheddddd
he didnt say his catchphrase
I can't be the only one who didn't recognize him without the fucking hat..
It sounds way better with the round wound strings
Rob :3
Do they make those rubber strings for full scale 20 + fret bass
You probably already know the answer but you can take a look at tapewound strings they sound very similar
Pretty articulate fellow 🤓
that ukulele bass is cool, But sounds like acoustic bass!
100% better played acoustic
Why now
Sounds like your playing a rubber band on a stick
I’ve played one myself and that’s exactly what it feels like.
tuned like a bass or a uke?
tuned EADG - like a concert tuned bass.
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH that's why he wears a hat
do you use the same chord in a ubass?
i know this comment is old but i love your pfp
I seriously don't like the sound of that at all, you can barely hear it with an amp.

Anybody know the song at 1:44?
I think it's just Rob noodling around
Money by Pink Floyd I think. Unless you were talking about after that
I think they meant the song after Money...
agreed, it reminds me a lot of his clean songs
Now that he's done his First of October stuff, people pointed out that it's very reminiscent of his song "Rollerblading" :)
Slap it
I only watched this cause I thought he was gonna play A Collapse
Why it sound like an upright
Rubber strings you can use round wound tho
It doesn't. It sounds like how many people THINK an upright sounds.
Y’all need to chill, I was making a joke
Well done. Excuse my bad sense of humor...
You may as well be twanging elastic bands.
Tog tog tog krang
It’s good but, honestly Rob didn’t present it very well.
The strings look like balloons
Cool, now make a war uke.
3rd channel
Ok u bass is too expensive for kids like me.Can I change my normal ukulele strings with bass strings?
do not do that. ukuleles are not meant to withstand the tension from thick bass strings. they'll snap, and that's if you can even get the bass strings to fit in the first place.
Jake Sibley oh ok guess i need to save up for the u bass..
Uke bass has specially engineered rubber strings. They're all scientific and shit.
Same range? It's all one octave higher.
Compared to an upright, yeah, but it's the same range as an electric
i tried but i can't hear a note
he should at least play a groovy bassline if he were presenting a bASS
