  • End of the Day | The Four O'clock Parade - Punishment Parade
    It's known as the Punishment Parade, also the Dismount Parade, which started in 1894 when Queen Victoria found the entire guard drinking and gambling while on duty and as a punishment, ordered that they had to be inspected every day at 4pm by an officer for the next 100 years! When that period was up Queen Elizabeth II decreed that the parade should continue as a tradition.
    The Dismount Parade which takes place daily on the courtyard in front of Horse Guards when the mounted sentries who have been guarding the official entrance to Buckingham Palace are relieved by dismounted sentries.
    Also known as 'The Four 'O' Clock Parade' and 'Punishment Parade' it takes place at 16:00 daily when following an inspection by an Officer the mounted guards dismount, then take their horses back to the stables for the night.
    Two dismounted sentries will then guard the entrance until 20:00 when the gates to Horse Guards are closed and then one sentry will remain on duty until 07:00 when the gates re-open.

    Thank you for explaining the reason it is called the punishment parade. It's great when people explain these things especially for us foreigners.
    I don't think the tourists were disrespectful when they applauded, they appreciated being able to watch one of the many traditions that Great Britain have. I believe that some of the traditions continue because of the tourists. That doesn't mean that they should be treated like characters at Disneyland like some tourists do. These men and women are doing a job, and an honorable job. Soldiers and first responders protect us and fight for our freedom and deserve the utmost respect.
    Thank you for videos, they are fun to watch and also learn interesting information. 🇨🇦

      Their punishment is having to be there at four o'clock when they'd prefer to be having a few beers at the end of a long day. If you've ever seen a photo of Queen Victoria, you can see she's a pretty mean queen.

    See him on the really tall horse can’t remember the name but that would be a site might have to watch going through the arches. I remember watching a documentary on the different uniforms etc and the guards did state the boots were hard to
    Walk in there was a reason for the design but can’t remember what interesting program enjoyed it

  • @osimandus

    Not a punishment parade, just an inspection before going on guard.

    • @RodPascoe
      @RodPascoe Год назад +3

      Nope. Do some research, it’s named after its inception.

    • @osimandus
      @osimandus Год назад

      @Rod Pascoe I dunno...14 years as a squaddie seemed research enough. It could be that different units have different names for it, but we just called it Guard Inspection before mounting the guard.

    • @RodPascoe
      @RodPascoe Год назад +3

      @@osimandus as I said, do some research. It’s named because Queen Victoria caught them asleep on duty and gave them this 4pm inspection as a punishment. She ordered it be done for 100 years. Hence the name, it’s a punishment for falling asleep.

I want to make it clear that this is just a mere opinion .🤝👍

    • @Barry_P
      @Barry_P Год назад +29

      They're not.
