- Just one night of rain has left the national capital, Delhi, waterlogged. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that Safdarjung, representing Delhi's weather, recorded a staggering 228.1 mm of rainfall in a 24-hour period between 8:30 am on Thursday and Friday. This marks the wettest single-day spell of rain for June in Delhi since 1936, when 235.5 mm was recorded.
Key junctions in Delhi are submerged, causing major travel disruptions. In Vasant Vihar, three laborers are feared trapped under a collapsed roof. The rain has also impacted air travel; a roof collapse at T1 terminal in Delhi resulted in one death and six injuries, sparking outrage on social media.
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge criticized the Modi government in a tweet, stating that the accident undermines PM Modi's claims of world-class infrastructure. He cited other incidents like the Jabalpur airport roof collapse, Pragati Maidan tunnel waterlogging, and bridge collapses in Gujarat and Bihar, attributing these failures to corruption and negligence.
In response, Union Minister of Civil Aviation, Ram Mohan Naidu, clarified that the collapsed building was an older structure from 2009, not the one inaugurated by PM Modi. However, with the BJP in power since 2014, the responsibility for infrastructure issues rests with the current government.

When you dont have competent people doing regular maintenance , when you don't use proper materials for longevity and use substandard raw materials in construction, when you don't have people doing regular planned daily, weekly and monthly checks on structural integrity by structural engineers. Such things are bound to happen.
It is still cheaper for the airport to compensate one family a little bit for the loss of their loved ones than increase annual budget and have better management for such things.

When the building was constructed in 2008, how is it collapsed in 2024? Had there been any structural deficiency as on 2008, it couldn't have remain standed/ erected for 15 years long. Surely it has either some maintenance issue or there might have some additional structural modifications after 2008. As it appears from video, NO STRUCTURAL collapse of T1 terminal, it is a collapse of false ceiling or false facade. NO STRUCTURAL ENGINEER can give a STRUCTURAL FITNESS certificate for more than 05 (five) years with many maintenance conditions. STRUCTURAL STABILITY Certificate tenure can never be more than 5 (five) years. It has to be issued every 5 years.

These things are supposed to be undergoing regular maintenance and checks. There is no regular system of doing such things in airport management hence these accidents happen.
