It turns out Richard Moss (of Secret History of Mac Gaming) recovered my 1990s letter to Al Evans and posted it online! twitter.com/gruz/status/1554843568392622080 Absolutely mind blowing to see that again... What are the odds?! Also surprised I remembered it as accurately as I did after 25+ years! (yet somehow I can't remember what I ate for dinner last night... 🤷♂)
I created this video back in 2019 right before I moved my Mac videos to this new channel. It kind of got lost in the shuffle ever since. I recently learned that Al Evans had passed away last month (July 2022), so I wanted to get this video back up honoring his game. It's largely the same video, just with a better audio mix and my current style of editing and pacing. I also took out some parts from the original video that don't make sense anymore, like how I called for Al to "Free Cap'n Magneto", because you couldn't register the color version of the game anymore and couldn't beat it. (He free'd the Cap'n). I'm proud of this video. This game meant a lot to me growing up and I think this video does the game justice. I hope you enjoy it! 🙂
Similar nostalgia here - I played the hell out of this when I was a kid back in 1988, sent my money in for the full version, finally beat it, which wasn't super easy for my 9-year-old mind. Fantastic tribute here - rest in power, Al Evans!
Fantastic review of a great game. I loved playing this when I was younger. Somewhere on RUclips is a video of an interview with Al. He was an amazing guy and I'm a little sad to hear that he passed away.
I loved this game so much as a kid. There's still nothing with the "friend/enemy" mechanic, and the fact that it was shareware meant I could access it even though my family didn't have a lot of money. I always wanted to register it and I regret never doing so, until 2009 when I found out you could register it on Kagi. Rip Al, thank you.
Oh crap -- my brother and I never could figure out how to get a key from the Official on the island when we were little. We tried bribing him with baubles, but, until this video, we didn't realize you were supposed to put the baubles in each of those four spots (shown at 4:57). Mystery solved!

How cool!

I love that the developer made a copy specifically for emulators. What a swell guy. Thanks, Al.
RIP Cap'n. Thank you for all the adventure.
Wow so awesome Gruz thanks so much

This looks really fun. The games from this era were so creative and imaginative. I'll have to download this one and give it a try.
I loved Cap’n Magneto as a kid. Never made it to the end. Very cool!
This looks incredible, I cant wait to play this someday on my SE
My dad used to play that over three decades ago.

I laughed way harder than I should have at "humanoid caca."

I could not finish this game but did with Dark Castle.
A great game
Great video on this game! Did you ever play any games by SSI on the Mac, like Pool of Radiance?
Man, were you getting over a cold when you recorded this narration?
Gruz?
I never got very far in this, and even on real hardware it was a crashy mess. Have you considered doing a let's play/walkthrough?
