I found this because I am wanting to make a bodhran. This video has a great perspective of other techniques and working with different shapes. Thank you for this.
Thank you Donald. I've made two octogon drums using this. Definitely a learning process. Going to redo the jig today. Had to use a digital angle finder on my miter since it wasn't true to 22.5. Gifted first two to family. So again, thank you for this. I'm Laguna Pueblo/Sicangu.
Hi Donald, thank you for sharing your knowledge in all of your very instructive tutorials! I am a hobby leatherworker in Australia and am always looking to expand my skills. Excited for the kangaroo hide to arrive so I can try this out. Best wishes, Kristy
Great video. Thx. I have found that laying out the pieces on a flat surface outside up, and then securing with packing tape makes for an easier glue up. Flip over, apply the glue and then pull together. Apply the band clamp and you are done.
Thanks. My piece of advice for everyone trying this, It really looks nicer when you turn the board and make one extra cut one the end when you have cut of a piece. That way the grain patern goes around the drum (if you keep your pieces in order :-) ) . And if you can I really recommend using Lammelo's in the corners.
I like your reinforcement with the splines and that's a handy jig you have made up to do that. what tool would you suggest to cut the bulk away of the inserts if one does not have a band saw?
I just made my first drum based on this tutorial and a few others, my drum is very buzzy though, it sounds good apart from this and i would love to know what might be causing it so I can fix it or start fresh and not do it again. Any trouble shooting tips? its an octagon pine frame with kangaroo. thank you, loving your tutorials
the skin is rattling on the flats on the wood. I often over round the inside edge or chamfer the top edge so that only the inside edge makes good contact with the skin.
@@donaldporta hi Donald thank you for the reply much appreciated, only just read you message have redone the drum a few times now, yes it was doing as you said also had some sand under the lip which might of been adding buzz, I routed the inside edge with a steep bevel so only a small contact area where skin touches the frame, I’m going to make another one now, so am I understanding you mean to route the outer edge with a bevel more so then the inside edge? My skin folds right around onto and over the bottom edge like other hoop drums too and realised there is a secondary buzz in the back edge too, so have now beveled that edge also, it is pretty good now but hoping to improve on this next one. Thanks again very interesting channel
Mr. Porta I have a question for you. My bro wants me to make 2 14” octagonal drum frames. I was wondering if you could help me figure out how long each side should be to make it 14” through the middle. Thanks

Glad it was helpful!
Really interesting way to make the frame! Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

a small hand saw will do, just try not to hit the sides while sawing them off.
Aannin How do you figure out the length of face pieces
educated guess--- number of holes punched x the width of the drum, plus some extra to tighten as because of slack in the lacing process.

Sweet knotting - any chance of a tutorial, please?
here is a video on lacing the drum head onto the frame, ruclips.net/user/edit?o=U&ar=2&video_id=eY4MDba8UcU

I like it
Cool splines.
What kind of wood are you using? Pine, cedar, poplar?
this was pine, with this method any wood will work.
Grazie caro amico
What size/thickness of wood did you use?
3/4 inch
