Given the multitude of tools we have at our fingertips, I can get overwhelming when it comes to getting started and generating musical ideas. This video shows you one of the methods I often use to build a basic feel, then create progressions that fit within it.

I have been doing a deep I’ve into this style of music, and these videos have really elevated my progress. I saw Tangerine Dream a few months ago in Austin, TX, and it was amazing. There is something very unique about this type of music, that has always captivated me.

Yup - great tutorial - you have now filled my head with ideas that I have to try. Especially the "out of phase" clips, where you use the same MIDI, but just shorten it by a bar. Great idea! And I love combining prog with berlin-school with doom metal (yes, doom metal!) to try to create dark outer space epics. Thanks again!

What a great idea to set aside some work before the actual composing begins. I too am often distracted by sound design and all kinds of 'fluff' that keep me from making the actual song. I will try your method. "Ducka-Ducka" forever!

@@synthseeker Certainly. Some of these techniques inspired me to try to do similar things on my RS7000 and I did some uploads on the jams. So thanks for what you're doing and keep doing just that :)

Thank you! I could share the Ableton Set file, but the plugins are custom / commercial. In the future I plan to do a full song construction video using these techniques, and I will use only built-in tools. that will allow me to share the Set. It's coming soon! very cool! now can you maybe show how to make full berlin school track? just mute/fade/filter specific parts? solos? how to build/release tension and balance all together....
Also I like sometimes to transpose after a quantizer, I like how key change is creating tension, but not sure how often I should can do it inside one track....

great video. I like to do it with hardware but then you are restricted. Sometimes that is a creative push. I like using Zebra2 if I am using oftware. It has that berlin sound ; ) Love your approach.

Thank you for the tutorial. I am going to attempt the music machine that you have described. (SBAR) situation: I’m in a flat in Ramsgate Kent UK. I have a PC running I seven processor 32 gig of ram. Good Audio speakers. Are use an external audio card. I’ve two screens.
Background: my main desire for building these things is to create Berlin school. Ahead
Assessment: I like the idea of the group of musicians working together. In the 10 years I’ve been working in this area I’ve created some good hacks.
Recommendation: in fact your recommendation to create and share in that group that circle appeals to me.

That Rick is so old…it’s from Trillian, by Spectrasonics then I layer it with a Taurus bass pedal simulation. :)

What are the quintessential Berlin School songs I should hear before entering the genre?
It depends. There are "classic" artists - the earlier artists of the genre (Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze, Ash Ra Tempel), but honestly if you want current artists, who are working (or expanding on) the Berlin School, I'd go visit BandCamp.com and check the tag for Berlin-school and check out artists there as well as listen to the old stuff. :)

Anyone had success getting this to work in Logic Pro X? I’m able to transpose a Live Loop using the Transposer midi plugin, but can’t figure out how to trigger Transposer with a midi controller (keyboard). I’d like to be able to play a note on the keyboard, and have the sequence transpose to that root note. Any tips would be much appreciated!

@@synthseeker I tried this and I'm getting closer! I'm able to connect the Transposer semitone slider to a knob on the MIDI keyboard, so I can transpose it that way, but so far can't figure out how to get it to change to a specific relative pitch based on the note played on the keyboard. When I try the "learn" process with the keyboard, it just associates the key I press with the Transpose semitone slider, and it doesn't seem to know what to do with that. I'll update here if I figure it out :)
When you use “learn”, hold down two keys (like c2 and c3) to try and map a range of notes to the slider.
@@synthseeker Thanks for the suggestion! Unfortunately it didn't work :( I've been searching for documentation on mapping a MIDI key range to a control in Logic, but so far I haven't found anything.
