The powerhouse country of Africa! 🇿🇦
The most infamous loss is the injustice to Odette Scrooby. She was the judges' overwhelming favorite leading to the pageant finals so how could the same panel that gave her first place in prelims shut her out from the final five with a heartbreaking 11th place in swimsuits.
She eventually finished in sixth place narrowly losing the fifth spot to Teri Utley Miss USA.
She would always be a sentimental favorite.
Odette is an icon, that info about the swimsuit score is what probably happened, very sad
It’s a shame cause Terri didn’t want to win miss universe. Karen was however the right choice, though 18 she spoke well for herself and held on her own great. Patty would of definitely won if she put her hair down like she had during interviews and swimsuit. Also 18, she was spunky and interesting she she spoke. It would of been nice to put Guam on the map.

People always think SA did well after Demi won in 2017 but they have actually been such a strong underrated contender from the beginning
Australia here. I still remember when South Africa won in 1978! I also think that 1982's delegate - Odette Scrooby, was quite possibly the most beautiful woman I have ever seen. If not for an error in the computer scoring in the swimsuit competition (one of the judges wanted to give her 10.0, but the highest you could give was 9.99, so it registered as 1.0) which made her just miss out on making it to the top 5 - she would have won for sure.

Thanks so much for the reply Isaac! We love our SAFA cousins, and I’ve always rooted for SA. Thanks for the good wishes back. The pageant doesn’t get huge support here, so have always been proud of Australia doing ok despite that. Odette was totally robbed - I still think about it to this day every time I watch Miss Universe! Was rapt when Roelene Strauss won Miss World. I think she would have been amazing at Miss Universe if she had gotten to compete there.
South Africa is never “underrated”, and nobody thinks after 2017 they got good. They always been good

One pageant blog revealed that one of the judges didn't follow the instructions to give a score that ranges from 1.0 to 9.99 and instead gave Odette a perfect score of 10 which the computer automatically reverted to 1.0... Sad sad info

South Africa 🇿🇦🇿🇦 is one of the best countries both in Miss Universe and in Miss World but I hope other African countries such as Namibia, Botswana and Angola etc. will also get the same spotlight just as like them. Hope to see Part 2 from Colombia, France, India and Mexico soon.😊❤

When Margaret won she had very low scores, almost all of them 6 and up, Or is it that at that time they only went up to 6, 6 was the maximum?.
The highest scores in interview, swimsuit, and evening gowns were 8.155 (USA), 7.855 (USA), and 7.545 (Spain), respectively. South Africa with 6’s, made the top 5 in fourth place.

Other African countries deserved the same spotlight especially Namibia, Botswana and Angola which have won once in 1992-Michelle Mclean, 1999-Mpule Kwelaganobe and 2011-Leila Lopes always remember in the past 10 years African continent have sent many amazing ladies not just only South Africa 🇿🇦🇿🇦. 😂😅
