What a fab memory! I was in a folk group at school in the early 70's and we learned this, harmonies and all! All these years later, I still remember the words ... thank you for finding this!

What a great and moving song, when you think how those poor souls were treated and the world stood by and watched, especially the UK we should be ashamed of ourselves, I watched them sing this on stage back in the sixties in Manchester, loved this group and their sincerity in their music.

So proud that I can still sing this, almost 50 years after I first heard them sing it!

Same here. Sang it at work this week word for word.... In 1985 I sang it in my drama O level and then had to say it out loud as if a reporter. Just a fantastic song.

I’m only 39 but a lifelong spinners fan (one of my happiest and earliest memories was going along to their Christmas reunion/farewell tour in the 90s) and I’m proud to say I know this off by heart too thanks to The Spinners.

And to think this is just before they called it a day; this is their own best version of this by miles. I miss them all, very very much so.

I was fortunate enough to see Hughie perform at my local Working Mans Club a couple of years ago.
This was when he and Tony Groves were the last surviving members. In the interval I rushed home and brought back some Spinners vinyl lps to be autographed.
One of them was Family of Man and Hughies wife was also there and she actually gave me the full run down of everyone on the cover. Who's was whose wives and children, and that the baby she is holding in said cover is now 53!
It was a wonderful night and despite being in his 90s to hear Hughie singing Ellin Vannin and Leaving if Liverpool had me singjng, and I am not shamed to admit crying too.

We used to sing a rather mangled version of this in our folk club. So lovely to hear it done properly! Thanks for posting.

This is the opening song of our informal folk group ( I.e. only when put on the tax and prepared to sing for a pint from the landlord, but we always get asked to close with it as well).

My late first husband and I used to sing this along with my little brothers ( twins) we taught them. We sang at the Molesworth Arms, Stableloft folk club in Wadebridge , Kernow. They loved my little bros singing it with us. No grown up and grandparents both of them. Time goes too quickly but things are not changing for the good even now. Pray for this world. We were a part of a group called Quartz with Ern and Mo Keast. Sadly Ern is also passed over now. God bless you and Tony Ern. Xxx rip. Miss those lovely evenings. Never be the same again. !!!!
