Something very important and special that maybe most people missed. Her sense of nature was that she was part of it, part of the 'the wilderness takes and gives, it kills yet it doesn't see it as something bad...' She felt so strong about it, that she was of the swamp herself, part of the flora and fauna that when she killed her boyfriend, she saw it as the natural course to take with no blame on her, as we read in her journal at the end of the movie. She was willing to go to prison than to say she was guilty of, mind you, not being part of the swamp and ITS laws. Of course she knew what she had done was wrong according to OTHER laws, but for her the laws of the swamp and the wilderness meant more for her so she understood her act against him as needed and justified. What a great story. I have watched it more than once even though I don't like crying due to some mental struggles, but I just can't help it.
Mark, it is important, it illustrates just how far removed from the swamp we all are and in so being are killing the environment on which we all depend, even Trump (not that he cares) and his younger family who most definitely will care when nature strikes back. As it is doing! We ain't seen nothing yet. However, it's nothing to worry about. At the end of the day we cannot do anything to stop the progress of evolution as to think we could go back to living in harmony with nature as Kya does is just an elusion. Try to be philosophical about it.
