As it's said often "you need to know the rules before you can break them". Learning to draw realistically before exaggerating so you know what you're exaggerating is important.
I can see now you are going to help me a lot, Stan. I'm finishing school next year and after that I want to study art. There will be exams and I really need to prepare myself, because I lack basic art education. I have very little knowledge of how to draw proportions and almost 0 experience. With your videos I can practice in peace. I thank you for that.
@@libertyhaas6950 Hehe, I did. And I left without finishing the 2nd year 😁 Didn't like it. Realised I don't want education at all. Call me crazy. But I am cooking up a creative project, that's gonna involve a lot of art.
The whole concept of drawing shapes instead of naming things is really well developed in Drawing on the right side of the brain, Betty Edwards, really advice viewers to read it... Even more if you are a beginner :) This + those videos will help a lot to improve your skills
You get over it by doing it. One of the biggest things preventing beginning artists is that they're afraid of ruining sketchbooks, expending canvases, wasting paint, etc. But you have to think, is it more useful for you to paint on it and learn from it, or for it to sit there blank for the rest of forever? The canvas isn't going to contribute anything to the world by itself, so you might as well use it. Once you've used 30 canvases, it won't bother you nearly as much.
Hi Stan, you just made me more aware of my stupid brain and the many mistakes I make. Many thanks for your christal clain explanations that will help me to become a smarter artist :-). High regarts, Lineke
i find that what people really mean, is whether it is necessary to know the names of the muscle... which is not. it is important to know their shapes and how they flex and what do they connect to, etc.
Hehe, I draw lots of bad artwork, but I always love to use extreme perspectives and weird angles, so even though I'm pants at shading, I'm possibly the best of all my friends at judging perspective. I don't do it w/ vanishing points, though - I find it easier just to learn when it 'feels' right. Btw, the "1 pt perspective hallway photo" was actually in full perspective, but it just showcased a single perspective more strongly than the others - but the others WERE still present...
hmm. thanks for the advice. I will be doing the exercises :) One real world example which I found while reading up was airplanes at an weird angle, or cars being flipped about in the air would have these kind of perspective.
Oh and just to add, there can be more than one horizon line in an image. There is only one *true* horizon line, but there can be others like when you draw an incline/decline in a road. Connecting two of the three dots should give you the pseudo-horizon line. Now, I could be completely wrong, but these are the conclusions I came to when learning perspective :)
Need help: doubt in 3 point perspective, what are the situations when all of the 3 VPs are NOT on horizon and how to plot them, plus how to plot the measuring points? Thanks.
necessary? That depends on what youre doing. If you want to depict natural looking people, yes.. There should not be any part of the body that is a mystery to you.
I know this feeling, canvases are not cheap. But if you'r feeling insecure, try sketching in a rough draft with a pencil first, with low pressure. Even if you make mistakes, you can still erase :)
Actually I don't see where the foreshortened leg looks right. The picture at 4:15 is incorrect anyway because the right foot in the photo is ahead of the left foot but reversed in the drawing. To me it still looks extended.
What about artists in the comicbook business? Okay so usually the men are way bulkier than the women so it would help, but does that mean you can be a bit more ''freeform'' or ''stylized'' with the ladies?
As you saw in the two different two point perspectives, the location of vanishing points really depends on what you are going for, or if you want a real world example: they depend on the 'lens' the 'picture' was taken with. I'm sure there is a mathematical way to plot exactly where the vanishing points go (I don't know it sorry), it usually just takes a trained eye to be able to spot where the vanishing points go. Draw a bunch of cubes on paper using 3 randomly placed dots, its a good start.
Late reply but look up "Environment Design 1 | Master Class Demo" on RUclips. This demo video goes into how to place the Vanishing Points properly. It doesn't talk about flattening perspective specifically but its related. The closer the two vanishing points are the more distorted the object will look (i.e. the corner of the car will really stand out). If you spread out the vanishing points the perspective will be flattened and the corner will not pop out as much.
Do one with boxes, only boxes and draw them at every angle possible or show us how to IN DETAIL Please.. ? I like your structure one but was not detailed much and this is very important. Do it as if we know nothing about it. Please
love your content. If you could love nudity a bit less.. I mean nothing against the human body and such but at the end of the day I mostly watch your vids in coffee shops, so when a shawang pops up on full screen.. Ok but seriously your stuff is so helpful, love your vids
yup. It's because I always wear long sleeves in my videos..
As it's said often "you need to know the rules before you can break them". Learning to draw realistically before exaggerating so you know what you're exaggerating is important.
You're very lucky, Stan. You've got two valued skills or talents--art and teaching. Very few people can do both of those things so well.
Desdemona Gladiola it’s called years of research, experience and practice. There’s no such thing thing as “lucky”

Reaching hundred likes after 3 years 🌸
Oh no! I uploaded a 720p video. I don't know why youtube shows only 480p. Anyone know?
But , i can see this video in 720👍

next dvd, probably later this year on figure drawing fundamentals
Indeed and I think he is probably the best art/drawing teacher currently here in youtube. I never get bored of this lol

well said Jon
You'll have to get over that. When I do figure drawing videos there will be a lot more naked men.. It's natural.

Your videos are simply awesome Stan! It is so easy to overlook the fundamentals of art and your videos serve as a nice refresher for me. Thanks a lot!

great video! thank you!
i hate foreshortening with a passion -.-
It does seem to come natural for some people. I struggle with it massively.
For some reason proprioception makes figure drawing and foreshortening easier.
This video was super informative! Thanks for this great video.

I read about this concept, although need to practice more in order to fully understand the concept.
Glad to see you back. You make learning easy. My favorite online instructor, when is the next DVD coming out? Thanks.

It is necessary to know the muscles we see and that most influence how we percieve humans. So not of all of them. And not the names really.
Thank you one more time. =D

Careful with figure drawing classes. You might feel awkward.
You are definitely the last person I would like to have as a teacher... Is not okay when you start insulting...
What? I know this is a very old comment so you probably won't reply, but... Where did he insult anybody?
Why I can't still draw perspective right??? Why I'm so dam F***ING STUPID? :(
I know--fig leaves are so silly. Penises really aren't that scary.
I would have rather seen a clothed person than the almost naked guy.
So no help at all
