It looks overdramatized. Napolean was a genius who essentially created modern warfare and millitary organization, they are turning him into a parody of himself.
@@liamneilson9098 Thanks for the info, even as a Frenchman i find it quite annoying that so many people attribute random quotes to Napoleon, he has more than enough already.
People followed him because he had something mystical about him. Anyone who met him immediately noted down on returning home what he had done or what he had said, such was the feeling of meeting an extraordinary man.
"On s'engage partout, et puis l'on voit" -Napoleon "Jump into the fray, then figure out what to do next." As the type of person who obsessively plans to a fault and cannot force myself to commit to something if I think there's even the slightest chance I'll fail, I DESPERATELY wish I had even a shred of Napoleon's reckless willingness to try and make the world move. He's a man who put his shoulder to the planet earth and actually made it budge a little.
I liked that too. Josephine has too prominent a role unfortunately. His devotion to her is well known, they're pretty kind to her tbh. But a number of important aspects of his life/career are not even mentioned.
Just seen this, wasn’t impressed, agree with comment above, phoenix is a great actor but he basically played the joker here, not enough charisma. For all his flaws Napoleon was charismatic and loved by the people, that wasn’t sold in this movie.

Napoleon is one of the most celebrated historical figures ever. He had such a rich history. But how can they put 20 years of his life into just 2 and a half hours? I guess we'll find out when it is ready. But one thing we can count on is that Joaquin Phoenix will conquer this role like so many others. "Who's country are we in?" "Mine!" Absolute chills!
"I found the crown of France laying in the gutter.... And I put it on my own head" That line had me. The delivery was epic. It had me wondering if that was a direct historical quote or not. Just fantastic.
It is a direct quote, although it was obviously originally said in French. He refused to have the Pope or any other Catholic authority put it on his head as he wanted to signal that his authority was above that of the church.
@@Galvaxatron Thanks for that. I knew the history of not having the pope crown him for France... it's just the line itself I found incredible. I also found out that there was more to it. @@dizzytitan8481 well it's all about a point in time in France, so everyone speaking English with French accents is even more ridiculous than Joaquin speaking without one. @@Latinkon Yes! Thank you for mentioning the 2002 miniseries. Clavier's take was hands-down the best depiction of Napoleon (and Isabella Rosellini as Josephine as well). I think if you combined Clavier's wit with Phoenix's gravitas, you'd get the perfect Napoleon.
Can’t wait to watch this one on the big screen. Pheonix’s performance is phenomenal just through the trailers, and the Battle of Waterloo is just making me even more excited.
If they do include Waterloo, it has big shoes to fill. Waterloo (1970) had 15,000 extras so it really felt like a gigantic battle with cannon shells and huge masses of cavalry.
Having attended the 200th anniversary commemoration of Waterloo in 2015, what I realised all films of the battle get wrong is that it was, and still is, a working farm. The battle was right on the solstice and the crops were nearly waist high. At the reenactment, we were wading through the barley, and the ground was uneven as the fields had been ploughed. Films always show the battlefield as more like a golf course.
@@mariokartpro7406 How do you know? Were you at the reenactment? One of the things that surprised me was the actual Fog of War we experienced. There were only allowed to be 6000 to 7000 reenactors in total (compared to over a hundred and eighty thousand at the actual battle), yet at times in the bottom of the valley on the battlefield, the gunsmoke from the muskets was that thick, the only way to see where other battalions were was from the muzzle flashes as they let off a volley. We would see a troop of French cavalry cantering out of the smoke and there would be an urgent call to Form Square! from the officers.

Napoleon was so filled with confidence, assurance, and bravery that it was consistently noted in chronicles. He left an indelible impression on people. Once, he walked unprotected before the soldiers of France and declared, "Before you stands your emperor. If anyone disagrees, shoot me right now." Napoleon was surrounded by enranged soldiers during a time of unrest and uncertanty. There was a total silence and no one shoot him
This looks amazing I can't wait. The fact that Ridley Scott is in his 80s and able to make amazing looking film just shows his mastery in cinema. Too many young director rely way too much on special effects and what "modern audiences" want they aren't original anymore. It's sad that in 2023 we still look forward to films by Ridley Scott, Martin Scorsese, Quentin Tarantino, Steven Spielberg, James Cameron, Christopher Nolan, Tim Burton, Guillermo Del Toro, M Night Shyamalan to name a few. Directors that have been creating movies for decades now but still able to bring us that magic movie experience that we just don't really get with younger directors.

Napoleon Bonaparte, one of my favorite historical figures, played by the legendary Joaquín Phoenix, the film I most look forward to seeing. For me this scene is my favorite 1:37, the thousands of French cavalry charging. I have been able to notice in the trailer important historical events that occurred in the time of Napoleon: * 0:16 The battle of Austerliz, where Napoleon defeats the Third Coalition led by Austria and Russia, and in retreat the French fire on the ice and the allies fall and drown. * 0:44 The siege of Toulon, where Napoleon defeats the royalists loyal to XVII and expels the British * 0:52 Napoleon visits Egypt, and takes some scientists with him, visits the ancient tombs. * 1:11 I think that here Napoleon is escaping from his exile on the island of Elba, to return to France and the 100 days begin. * 1:18 The execution of Marie Antoinette, although I highly doubt that Napoleon was there to witness the execution. * 1:30 The coronation of Napoleon as Emperor of France in 1804, where he himself takes the crown and places it on his head, just as it happened in real life, and that scene looks the same as the painting that recreates the moment . * 1:50 Napoleon arrives in Moscow, Russia in his invasion of the territory and finds it uninhabited, as the Russians managed to retreat and abandon the city, where they later set it on fire, leaving nothing for the French. * 2:04 The Battle of Waterloo on June 18, 1815, where Napoleon is definitively defeated by the British and Prussian armies commanded by Arthur Wellesley, Duke of Wellington and Gebhard Leberecht von Blücher. In this scene Wellesley orders his soldiers to form bayonet squares that destroy the French cavalry.
Great eye for detail there , really looking forward to this film especially the battle of Waterloo, of course I'm biased though 🇬🇧all good in Europe now , more or less .

"Impossible is a word to be found only in the dictionary of fools." (Napoleon Bonaparte) His words always inspired 🔥 me. Waiting for seeing legendary Warrior in big screen played by legendary actor 🔥 and master crafted by legendary director 🔥.
The Napoleonic Wars are one of my most favorite eras to study in history so I'm happy to see more Napoleonic films like this we need more historical movies. Looking especially forward to the battles it'll be interesting to see how they present them in their grand scale as *Waterloo 1970 with Rod Steiger* truly did the greatest job at this, but here it looks very promising greatly reminds me of all the paintings of the battles! *The only problem is how you make a 2hr movie of a person with such a deep and brilliant character unless you created multiple or a series*
Even worse this trailer already contains many inaccuracies...including from what Im guessing is Austerlitz's Lake of Ice. Only a few hundred men out of an army of tens of thousands were trapped and killed in the ice and they were retreating from the lost battle...
lmao they are adding feminist thing here too and i don't like it. they should make it as real as possible like there is no way napolean will listen that he become great because of a women. she would be dead the next second

Films always show the battlefield as more like a golf course.
cause it looks better

* 0:44 The siege of Toulon, where Napoleon defeats the royalists loyal to XVII and expels the British
* 0:52 Napoleon visits Egypt, and takes some scientists with him, visits the ancient tombs.
