If you will, try to find a quran with the tafsir (commentary) to get a correct understanding. If I may contribute to the meaning behind it, is that everyone will cross the "sirat" meaning the bridge to Paradise which stretches above the hellfire. The believers will continue straight on into Paradise, however the evil doers are unable to and will fall. We need to keep an open mind when reading the Quran. It will be more enlightening and heart felt. God is most forgiving and loves to forgive. And promised the believers to enter Paradise straight on.

@nykoserina2156 Thanks for the reply. I don't trust ANY Tafsir. Not Ibn Kathir nor the earliest one Al- Tabari. They put their own thoughts and wishful thinking on Quranic ayahs that caused confusion amongst people. None of the Tafsir authors were companions of the founder nor did they know anyone who was an eyewitness. The earliest exegesis is near 100 years after Rasulullahs death.

I can attest that one non Muslim guy prayed next to me at one of the protest we had in town a few weeks ago, and I must say that he did pretty well for trying to pray like Muslims!

This means that everybody - be he a believer or an infidel - will go across Hell. However, this does not mean that they would go to stay in it; they would only go across it.

If ONLY they had said the Shahadah before performing the prayer, it would have been beautiful, but as you suggested, this might be their first step to becoming Muslims.

@seekeroftheway2241 Salvation in Islam means being saved from entering the hellfire or being saved from it after having entered it because of sinning.
Thus, there are BELIEVERS who will cross the bridge over the hellfire at different speeds without falling into it as a result of their level of piety.
Whilst there are BELIEVERS who will fall into the Hell fire because of their sins, and will need to go through it to be purified before they will be admitted to Paradise forever.
The DISBELIEVERS, on the other hand, will go straight to the hell fire and be there forever.
This is the meaning of the verses you are referring to that you clearly do not understand.
And Allah(swt) knows best what the TRUE meaning is.
