Lovely portrait! I want to try graphite sketching again even though it smudges so much. You are an inspiration! I might try colored pencils first though, will you also do a tutorial for colored pencils?
The trouble I am having with sketches is the shading. Can't seem to grasp how to shade and if I should be strictly following the reference or just make it up instead i.e. decided on where the light source is approximately and just go with it.

Decide the light and go with it. The reference is mainly controlled by the camera exposure so your judgement will always be better, IMHO.
