this really helped! definitely heard the “don’t explore you’re first run through” advice from others. i think maybe avoiding those yellow doors unless you want a challenge is good advice, but otherwise explore away! i’ve also found really help: instead of rushing straight to biome 2 once you’ve beaten the first boss, maybe farm biome 1 a bit. you can rest at the ship so why not try to increase your max integrity, get a healing item, even an extra life if you’re lucky. then you’re in a way better spot to take on the second boss
I got a question, if you beat the first boss and go to biome 2, and you die during biome 2, do you have to start from 0 again? Like you have to kill the first boss again to go to biome 2? I cant even beat boss 1 and im just thinking when i beat it i will probably die on biome 2 and its frustrating to think i will have to fight boss 1 again
You don’t have to ever beat the bosses again, you can each run if you want, but you don’t have to. After you beat boss 1 you just run biome 1 again and can skip the boss if you choose to. Same for everything afterwards. Hang in there my man, you got it!
Just bought it for PC and I am still in the first level, died two times to the boss, now with all the tricks here I feel, like I am able to beat him in the next run, thanks. The game doesn´t tell you much, but that is good, you learn and keep learning.
Someone may have already mentioned this but you don't die if you get a third malfunction. A third malfunction is called a critical malfunction and it will destroy any random item you have. If you're out of items (keys, consumables, artifacts, etc) it will go after your health upgrades, then it will cause damage.
Also heard “don’t explore on your first run, don’t go in challenge rooms and ignore malignants”. I quickly learned that absolutely will not work. What did work for me was exploring everything, farming proficiency, working on clearing malfunctions and leaving all my health pickups and chests until on my way from the ship (to heal) to the boss room. Definitely a time investment but knowing I’m not allowing myself to pick up silphium, kinda made me play carefully aggressive.
When looking for the buttons to open the gate, if you use the “look down sights” button you’ll hear a beeping while looking down the sights, just move around to where you hear the beeping loudest and look around.
Good tips. Take your time. Explore and pick up health, obilites and guns etc . Once you've taken out the enemies in a room they will basically be gone. Sometimes lower ranked enemies re spawn in a room but not often. You can then explore everywhere claim everything you can, then if your low on health teleport back to the ship, sleep and restore your health. Dont pick up every malignant item but dont be afraid to claim some and have some parasites. They can help out alot. And the negative effects are often minimal. Also if you come across or see the ability to craft an astronaut artifact. Do it!. It's an extra life! So you dont go back to the ship when you die you just re spawn in the same place with full health. Helpful in the 1st boss fight
Just fyi, the infinite heal function at the ship got patched out earlier this week. ( at least in biome 4). Can only rest at it once and it’s a very small fraction of hp regeneration.
Just started playing this today, there’s a lot of tips on YT that confuses me because it was never explained fully. your tips actually works ✅💯 thank you 👏🏻
Just finished 2nd playthrough - great tips, especially the risk/reward tip (the reward is seldom worth the risk in this game). I would add another thing. Movement is key in this game - the best weapons to aid you here are the Rotgland lobber (which can two shot mini bosses with its tick damage (poison dot). It's just broken when you unlock its tier two and beyond perks. Also the Hollowseeker can get a portal beam and a secondary turret. These annex traits simply pile on the damage and free you up to move as they do so. They destroy bosses too. One caveat with the Rotgland is that in can take some practice with flying enemies. The games 'anarchy' weapon with pylons is also great for crowd control but has a higher skill ceiling. Also, always buy adrenaline leech when you see it - incredible at keeping your health topped up by filling your bar as you kill enemies (it's a game changer) Anyway, hope this helps someone.
Thank you! It's my first game of its kind and kicking my butt at it! But I'm enjoying every moment so far.. perseverance is key. I managed to get to the first boss once but died and have yet to face him again. I find hip firing much better during boss fights as it allows a wider fov with faster movements. ADSing has its time and place. Appreciate your pointers! Cheers.
Two things: If you’re at “full” health, it might be worth it to wait on spoiled resin. Being at full turns siphilum into resin everywhere in the biome. If at full, I would collect as much normal green resin as possible before doing any spoiled. Also, third malfunction has only ever destroyed a random artifact for me. If you have crap artifact(s) or no artifacts it’s good to just stock up as many malignant things as possible when you’re early in a run. It may make your run fail, but it could also net you a lot of great stuff early on.
These are all good tips. Especially the one about exploring. Sometimes if you have a good weapon and enough health, the benefits of exploring far outweighs the risk. Beelining back to the objective is not always a good idea. In this game you have to build your character up a little before going to harder battles. Also, death is very punishing, so always have some type of way to recover health especially on bosses. Also, buy the regeneration if you have the ether or the item that lets you come back to life (won’t mention it because it’s a mild spoiler but you’ll know when you get it)
You've pretty much told me everything I already knew but hearing you talk makes me feel like I can beat this first both after trying literally 20 or more tries.
You can only have 2 malfunctions active at the same time, getting a 3rd won't kill you but it will delete something from your build, be it artifact, parasite or consumable, so getting more than 2 malfunctions can be very punishing but wont end your run
If you explore a lot, each biome should have a checkpoint resembling a large human shape. If you google “ether checkpoints Returnal” or something there should be pictures of them
Some tips I'd like to share; find your rhythm - practice moving, dodging, and if you have the grapple hook use it where possible as you gain invisibility frame whilst using it, focus on a particular build (damage, health, getting artefacts), and necessary risks/preparation, AND don't rush as you'll be prone to making mistakes and get frustrated.
Really good tip video..I've been really struggling to get into returnal even though I generally always like games like this and especially housemarque games
Great tips, man. I just started playing this. Made it to the third phase of the second boss on my first run. Wish I had known about the checkpoint because I ignored it not knowing what it did lol. I bet I could have made it to the third biome had I watched this video first.
Overall great advice 👌. Especially the part regarding weapons and not basing your decision to swap soley on level. You mentioned bonus damage, but I think even more important than how those stats are allocated, is what traits that particular weapon has, and what level those traits are at from previous runs. For example, I'm not a huge fan of the launcher, but if it has full auto as a trait im probably picking it up. I would also strongly suggest that once you've leveled up a trait on a weapon, swap it out for another weapon so that you're constantly making progression towards your weapons being better in future runs, at least in the earlier stages of your progress with weapons you tend to prefer. Once everything is level 3 the weapons become insanely more powerful.
Pick up/fabricate the astronaut every time it's available. It's a life saver when you don't have a checkpoint. Also my personal favorite suit upgrade is adrenaline leech. Paired with 1 less kill for an adrenaline level increase, I was constantly regenerating my health and was able to beat the first 3 biomes in one run. Currently stuck on derelict citadel now lol
Unfortunately you must rely on pure lack for the astronaut. Sometimes it's not availble, even if you have been grinding for some time in the biome to be able to afford it. For a skill based game, relying on luck is poor game design.
I think it more falls onto the Astronaut just being by far the best of the items. At least for me; having one standout item that reins above the rest is the main bad design aspect.
@@NyneIX9 I think if you are mainly focused on finishing the game to understand the story then the dying repeatedly will most certainly be very upsetting. And for me, To a degree it was very upsetting at first. I mean I would spend close to an hour perfecting my loadout only to die and lose my go-to weapon or preferred parasites. The issue was that I just wanted to get through the bosses with one weapon every time I restarted another run. However dying and perfecting a various loadouts made me get used to the effects of other parasites and weapons. Thus, in the long run I had three or four go-to weapons that I had a much easier time finding. Another thing is muscle memory. After dying so many times I was able to learn and respond quicker to attacks I was used to and new attacks from the bosses. Once your reaction time is quick enough to read the enemies’ next move the game gets more satisfying.
Reminds me of Socom US Navy Seals. If you and/or all your teammates croak you have to start the mission. Learning all the moves to avoid getting taken out is crucial
Idk about last year but now if you die while in the second biome, when you restart at the beginning all you gotta do is go to the crimson gate to get back to the biome you were at.
Another Good tip is to leave the health items for as long as possible. This strategy will build your health bar up because when you keep full health it will be picked up as Resin
Only when you're able to keep full health. Why not picking them up right away when you're at full health? So you can work on extending the health bar immediately, once the health bar is extended it stays like that for that run.
I really appreciate the amount of time and effort you put into this video. You are also very nice and fun to hear and listen to, I don't usually watch videos that are more than 3 mins but I ended up watching your entire video. Thank you, man!
This is like you said a really hard game. I have only beaten the first boss and have faced the second boss once but it's like every time you play it you get better. The graphics are awesome and the game play is simplistic but yet so sophisticated it doesn't matter to me how long it takes for me to beat this game because I truly love playing it. Thanks for the tips but what I really need to know is what I am not going to ask just looking forward to finding the answer myself.
Explore everywhere, only pick up health ups when at full health so you increase your health bar (don’t download the latest update and rest at the ship if you’re not at full health), astronaut for extra life, electropylon driver for gun, adrenaline life leech artifact which gives you health back for damage done if you reach at least level 1 adrenaline too if you can find or fabricate it
My advice as I've just done this one. Use the pylon gun. If you can get the Web attachment then cool, if not then just have at it with that. Keep moving and watch out for the shock wave attacks and swooping fireball attacks that if youre facing away can do you in.
You should have mentioned how changing the x and y movement percentage sensitivity numbers may help people who think the default numbers are to slow or fast.
On biomes where you can sleep in the ship (Boss 1 and 4), DO NOT PICK UP THE GREEN RESIN TO REFILL YOUR INTEGRITY. Just sleep multiple times over and over in the ship when your low. Let them sit and get as far as you comfortably can. When you leave 3 green behind, sleep again ALL THE WAY TO FULL HEALTH. COLLECT THE 3 RESINS AFTER THIS. The rooms are cleared and you will increase your health gauge. Keep doing this (leave them behind, when you leave the 3rd, collect them AFTER SLEEPING, repeat). You will have a long health gauge if you keep doing this.
@@DriedMoss you’re right I meant silphium. Silphium can add to your slots the same way resin can when your health is already full. Hopefully people understood what I meant. Didn’t know the lingo right off the bat I called everything health related resin and everything monetary obelites. Had to look up just now that the lesser resin is called silphium 😅
Just got my ps5 on friday, got too the second boss and was so bloody close to killing it, 10 runs in. Playing doom eternal on hard has definitely helped me, very similar combat
I just bought this 2 days ago and i must say , this is really a love hate game. The graphics are beautiful . The immersion is definitely crazy . And last night after a really long run ( still on 1st biome though) i get locked down and die . I get pissed . I wake up and go to work and find this video. Im inspired to play again . Thanks man !
We all been there, once you get the hang of the game, it becomes more fun...Although, I did beat the game, Its still challenging after you master it...
This games so dope. Barely got my ps5 in couldn’t decide on my first game went wit this one after watching some vids. It’s def intimidating at first lolol like I had to build up the courage to play it again each time lol it’s dark and like dude said fast paced you gotta be fast. Another good tip I read and applied was switching controller settings from walking to sprinting all the time.
it is a fkn cool and different game, I beat it few days ago, (to my surprise, last boss died easily, harder to just get there) and i am now grinding traits on weapons, but if I really try to go back and beat the game again, I know it is still will be challenging,....
I never was a first person shooter or this type of game..always played dark souls, witcher or games in that style but I tried this game and I’m totally into it I really liked this game a lot it’s bad ass
One of the best things you can do to improve is never aim unless altfire, but u can remap it. Aim assist is so good that no need to aim and it slows u down
@PlayerSelect-TerryB2 awesome Tip guide man. One thing I believe I can Edit...? @12:00 (if you have 2 Suit Malfunctions) I'm *pretty sure, not 100% that the 3rd gives you a "Critical Suit Failure" as in guarentee's it... no more "chance"... That's the cycle I've kinda been observing as one experiment run, I opened everything and put ALL the parasites I could find on Lol... correct me if I'm wrong though.. be well game on! 🙏🏽
I know I’m two years late but I just got a ps5 a week ago and I’m about to start playing this game tomorrow, super excited to die alot 😅 great video btw, good tips for a noob like me 👍
Congrats on the PS5! Returnal is really good but it is definitely hard. You’ll have one insane god run where the game will just click for you though so don’t give up right away (:
@@TerryB2 thanks man. So far I’ve only gotten to play like 2 hours of returnal but so far it was very enjoyable, watching these tips videos helped me understand things a little better I feel like. I’m probably gonna get deep into this game I can feel it 😅
I was on first biome and went thru a door and grappled all the way to the 3rd biome. Completely skipped the second one and didn't use a teleport so I was able to go back to my ship. Thought was really cool you can explore and get to other biome without doing the boss or using teleporting
Only in the first biome, died maybe a dozen times by now. This at the moment is tied with Bloodborne and Jedi Fallen order as my favorite roguelike/roguelite. I just like the sci-fi feel and how (personallly) it just feels like I'm playing a prometheus game.
did they patch out the ship healing spam?? because i went to go heal the ship and it only healed a TINY bit of health and then the option was no longer available
If that's true, disregard the above comment lol... what was the mechanic that guarantees a "Critical Failure"... is that the Parasite or Malfunction meta?
The green +’s on the map are resin and they’ll increase your max HP during your run, it takes a few for each increase. The purple malignant resins increase your HP too but give a malfunction
This game is so damn good. I hope it sells well but I have a feeling it's not going to. People don't like that you can't save and that the game is a little bit difficult. That is part of the reason this game is so good. It's not going to hold your hand. You have to use your brain and your skills together. I'm going to dump hundreds of hours into this game. It's balanced well it's optimized well the stability is fantastic. It just runs great
A big one for me. Not all runs are the same. I had a great long run w astro fig and great weapons but totally died by those automatons in 3. Then I dont have crap but storm thru level 3
3rd boss is a doozy, for me after that point it was easy. I managed to beat him with the poison crossbow type weapon, it’s not very good against normal enemies, but on 3rd boss you can shoot him every now and then, and just let the poison hurt him while you focus on the dodging since there’s so much movement and jumping around in that boss. That’s how I beat him, maybe give it a try if you can, but I’m sure you’ll beat him soon either way! Good luck!
I'm doing pretty good at the game i beat the first and second boss because i make sure i go threw every room and clean it good before i leave and back track and before i go to the 2 level boss i go to the champion 🏆 room when you kill everybody in there you get so many great rewards is amazing and worth it but you have to be prepaid for the fight
I’m completely stuck on the 5th biome. I’ve watched other play throughs and they have weapons at the same proficiency that are just melting enemies like they are nothing but it takes me forever to clear a room. The rng can be pretty one sided at times too.
My tip is in the first biome. Dont pick up any health. Just go back and heal up. Then when your ready to move on. Go back and pick up all the health and grow your suit integrity.

i beat this game with only 10 deaths
@@ngbedeogah5585What does that mean to you?
@@GrownManPat it means am really good at the game
I don’t think Resin refills your integrity, it only fills an upgrade slot.
@@nolenoribello7318 Really?
I will try it out next time I’m streaming, give you credit for fixing my assumption if in error.
Cheers!
I can happily say I sleighed the first boss on my first try
I have a hate/ love relationship with this game. Still on first boss!
Me to buddy me too lol, proper kicking my face in.
Pylon gun with Web attachment is great for whittling the shit heads health down quick
@@paulholmes112 I returned it. Said fuck it
Just got my ps5 on friday, got too the second boss and was so bloody close to killing it, 10 runs in.
Playing doom eternal on hard has definitely helped me, very similar combat
Superb video, very helpful thanks.
Happy to help!
Thanks for the tips homie really helpful
great tips, thanks! this game definitely reminds me of doom eternal in some ways
The pistol with homing is op in the beginning. Took care of the first 2 biomes with just that. Then I died. Haha
Top tips! Thanks !
Get used to turning sprint on at all times in options. Super worth getting used to.
Well done! Stuck on the first boss here 🤣
He’s super tough, once you get the dodge timing down you’ll have it (: good luck!
Thank you so much. Great, concise and informative guide
Best tip video on this game by far but they patched the Helios part so You can heal only 1 time per run and the amount of healing is really small
You have to risk it to get the biscuit!
Great content dude. Just subbed
Great video thank you bro
Thanks a lot for the tips, esp. re. how difficult the 1st boss is.
Just got the game, thanks fior the tips
Happy to help!
I never was a first person shooter or this type of game..always played dark souls, witcher or games in that style but I tried this game and I’m totally into it I really liked this game a lot it’s bad ass
I've beaten the game four times now. You're advise helped. It's too easy at this point
This was FANTASTIC and I can verify they're 100% legit (been playing w/ a review copy since before launch). Congrats from a fellow content creator.
I fuckin wiiiiish I was getting review copies. Thank you for the props, I appreciate it!
Thanks young man! This was very informative 👏
I have 75 deaths, but I can’t beat second Boss, I want to cry, but ok, I will try not to give up, thanks for the vid :,)
I believe in you my man, keep at it, take your time on your run leading up to the boss. You can do it!
Don’t feel bad. I’m around 50 deaths and have yet to beat the first boss. I’ve been close a few times though.
Player Select - TerryB2 I’m not man though, but thank you for the support, just managed to finally beat him!:)
Grateful Dude I believe in you!
Lol, sorry my bad, congrats on beating him!
One of the best things you can do to improve is never aim unless altfire, but u can remap it. Aim assist is so good that no need to aim and it slows u down
I agree
@@609STAACKS are you using the "high" aim assist setting?
I’m probably gonna get deep into this game I can feel it 😅
Im just starting I love it so alienlike
I was on first biome and went thru a door and grappled all the way to the 3rd biome. Completely skipped the second one and didn't use a teleport so I was able to go back to my ship. Thought was really cool you can explore and get to other biome without doing the boss or using teleporting
How do you get the grapple?
After second boss I believe (:
@@TerryB2 ty 👍
Thanks for the tips. Best advice so far.
It is really difficult, and RNG dependent, but hopefully you’re having fun! Glad to help (:
Excellent tips! Thank you good sir
I love this game so much.
Only in the first biome, died maybe a dozen times by now. This at the moment is tied with Bloodborne and Jedi Fallen order as my favorite roguelike/roguelite. I just like the sci-fi feel and how (personallly) it just feels like I'm playing a prometheus game.
Both those games you mentioned are not roguelites.
Thanks for the help
did they patch out the ship healing spam?? because i went to go heal the ship and it only healed a TINY bit of health and then the option was no longer available
Yeh they patched it
Thanks.
3 malfunctions won't kill you but it will delete a random artifact that you have.
Thank you for the info, good to know!
If that's true, disregard the above comment lol... what was the mechanic that guarantees a "Critical Failure"... is that the Parasite or Malfunction meta?
@@opgam3r482 both can cause critical malfunctions
Crit malfunctions msy go a bit beyond just destroying artifacts. I got one on my last run that "destroyed" my overload function. 😵
@@sovereign257 I’ve had one that completely disabled my map
What’s the best way to get a bigger health bar? Does fixing malfunctions add to it?
The green +’s on the map are resin and they’ll increase your max HP during your run, it takes a few for each increase. The purple malignant resins increase your HP too but give a malfunction
This game is so damn good. I hope it sells well but I have a feeling it's not going to. People don't like that you can't save and that the game is a little bit difficult. That is part of the reason this game is so good. It's not going to hold your hand. You have to use your brain and your skills together. I'm going to dump hundreds of hours into this game. It's balanced well it's optimized well the stability is fantastic. It just runs great
Faaaaax i agree
A big one for me. Not all runs are the same. I had a great long run w astro fig and great weapons but totally died by those automatons in 3. Then I dont have crap but storm thru level 3
Appreciate the tips man! Struggling with the 3rd boss, gonna put these into action!
Good luck!
@@TerryB2 Nice one! Will keep an eye out for it
@@TerryB2 I done it! Thermogenic launcher with a lot of bonus damage!
Congrats! Now they game really starts (;
@@TerryB2 wow 4th boss has been the easiest one so far, man was just chilling playing music🤣
Great advice. Many thanks
Great video man! Thanks so much
I'm doing pretty good at the game i beat the first and second boss because i make sure i go threw every room and clean it good before i leave and back track and before i go to the 2 level boss i go to the champion 🏆 room when you kill everybody in there you get so many great rewards is amazing and worth it but you have to be prepaid for the fight
Coming off of playing a game like control helps me with the combat style of this.. needing to keep moving
The shooting and movement is very similar to Control, yeah
It did help man. And thanks for all the tips.
Great tips my friend!
THANK YOU!
I’m completely stuck on the 5th biome. I’ve watched other play throughs and they have weapons at the same proficiency that are just melting enemies like they are nothing but it takes me forever to clear a room. The rng can be pretty one sided at times too.
Buying the Astronaut artifact when ever you find them is very important in my opinion.
Yes, I heard the astronauts "give you an extra life"
This. I literally didnt defeat one boss without it.
My tip is in the first biome. Dont pick up any health. Just go back and heal up. Then when your ready to move on. Go back and pick up all the health and grow your suit integrity.
