On this sun-filled day in September, Jacob invited a group of fans to meet him at the Heritage & Arts Centre in Bow, London, for a special, Audience-Choir-inspired rendition of his new single, Little Blue. Thanks to all who came, in their bluest attire, learned the song that day and sang so beautifully - and thank you to Mahogany Blog for capturing this gentle moment so sublimely.
All audio was recorded live - JC had a hidden lav mic in the front of his hat :-)

On the original video there were quite a lot of comments saying "no way this is live because there is no mic", but the sound engineer chimed in confirming that he has a lav mic under his hat. You can get a glimpse of it a couple of times when he tilts his head back.
loved your reaction. love all of Jacob's amazing unconventional work. my cat started asking for dinner when yours jumped up on your lap :-)
Really enjoyed your reaction, this live performance is truly something else...
Hi Ken, what a nice surprise to wake up (UK) to find you’ve put out another video. Thank you for covering one of my favourite Jacob Collier songs. He certainly does have some very strange clothes choices but I would forgive him anything, because he’s such a maestro.
Although there's a recent video of "Fix You" live in concert with Chris Martin, the version of "Fix You" he did that's so good was part of benefit during lockdowns that was just him on piano from his room. But Jacob does make an appearance on one Coldplay album doing background vocals I think.
No, this "choir" are not fully rehearsed pro singers. It was a few local friends and fans responding to a social media post but he does these same kinds of chords completely improvised with thousands of audience members unrehearsed. I've been in two of those audiences, one of which we went chromatic. Over the course of his tours he had over 100,000 people participate so there's a song called "100,000 Voices" on DJesse Vol 4. He also created a software plug-in that allows other musicians to use those voices.
The audience interaction is partly inspired by Bobby McFerrin who Jacob finally met in San Francisco this past summer.

Thanks, Ken… what a performance! He recorded two other songs on the same day in the same venue: “Summer Rain” and “Hyperballad” by Björk. Both brilliant. Also check out his early videos, like the aforementioned “Moon River” as well as “All Night Long” (Lionel Ritchie cover) and “Don’t You Worry ‘Bout a Thing” (Stevie Wonder cover). Believe it or not, these are even more impressive, as he plays dozens of instruments, and layers his voice into incredible harmonies. He has won at least six Grammies and on each of his first four albums: his fan base is vast, global and highly sophisticated. This is the most magnificent of rabbit holes, enjoy!
Summer Rain is a spine tingling masterpiece by 3 immensely talented musicians. I love each of them separately so my expectations were high, but were surpassed by far.
@ Indeed!
Hi Ken, guessed you would enjoy this one , great reaction as always 😄 yes Jacob is certainly a unique talent , also unique in his dress style , a lot like Aurora 👍 thanks for this one.........
First time coming across your channel brother. Very nice, enjoyed your reaction!
Please do more Jacob collier reactions ❤
Yup, the microphone in his hat is one more detail of his unconventional genius. The Jacob rabbit hole. is well worth the dive. Vast genius. Be sure to see some clips of his audience choirs, like in Vienna, Portugal and Venice, and his cover of Bridge Over Troubled Water.
The mic in the hat is a sensiBel MEMS prototype. One of the Mahagony engineers went through the equipment on another posting.
They ar not singers. One or two I recognize, Dodie in black in the front row of the middle group. Otherwise, he invited fifty fans and a few friends to join him at the Heritage Art center, formerly a church. It is a mesmerizing performance and song by this true genius. The microphone is under his cap and he plays on his signature 5 string guitar which he designed and developed with Taylor. As for his clothes...how liberating!❤
Love this one! I'd heard his name, but assumed he was just another commercial pop artist, same as I once did with Aurora. After seeing them together, realized I was way off. So far I prefer him live and a bit stripped down (like this one), but then again I need to listen to more of his stuff. Got stuck on this one. Clearly extremely talented, and seems like a genuinely fine person. Creative dressing, which reminds me of Aurora, although she's more elegant these days. I was young in the 80's though, and compared how a lot of artists dressed back then (hairstyles!), not all that wild 😁. Happy holidays!
I avoided Dimash the same way because he was so everywhere and I thought he was just another pop star type. SOS cured me of that notion and now I think he is the best singer I've heard in my life.
You really should react to Jacob Collier doing his thing with two other singers, an orchestra and an audience singing "Wild Mountain Tyme". It is spectacular and you will LOVE it.
One of the two other singers on "Wild Mountain Tyme" is Dodie. She is in the choir here, in the middle group on the right from Jacob's point of view. The other singer is Laufey who is a great musician in her own right.
Jacob is an eccentric dresser! 😁 He is a wonderful musician - off the charts musical, with a huge vocal range. He is extremely well versed in musical theory, and had a five-string guitar custom made. He also mixes his music and loves collaborating with other musicians. I see some affinity with Paul Simon, now you mention it. I also see parallels with another creative innovator, Ren, in that he is willing to take risks with his music, and explore unselfconsciously. Not perhaps an obvious choice, but would be a very interesting collaboration. This song hits me in the heart every time!
I’m rather surprised you didn’t make mention of Jacob’s guitar having only 5 strings.
He now has a signature model 5 string guitar.
The ‘choir’ in this video are fans and social media followers who were able to join him for the making of this this video via a post he made on his account inviting them.
Welcome to the Jacob Collier rabbit hole; enjoy your stay.
I would recommend one of his lesser reacted to videos; his cover of “PYT”… or what I consider his magnum opus, his arrangement of “Moon River” (see how many music luminaries you can identify in the intro singing the word ‘moon’).
I actually didn't notice it was only 5 strings. Thanks
Hell yeah! Loved this as much as you!🎉🎉🎉
I'd love to see your reaction to Jacob's rendition of "Mountain Thyme", sung live with Laufey, dodie, and the New York philharmonic. Staggeringly beautiful.✌️
I'll check it out!
Jacob sang in choirs from a very early age and won some kind of award when he was young. His first public performance was a the montreux jazz festival 2014
I really like his fix you cover on his own in his room, musically. The recent version recorded at a London concert is fun and emotionally laden for the people who were in the crowd, but a bit more messy too.
And I love world oh world with video from the original recording session with the amazing choir!
Jacob 'Odd Chords' Collier!
BTW, at least one of the choir is a pro - Dodie, in the cut-across dark blue dress, front. He sings with her a lot.
Jacob plays a custom made 5-string guitar. He talks about it in an interview titled "How Jacob Collier Reinvented the Guitar" here: ruclips.net/video/WknTbYOet4c/видео.htmlsi=SuEs-6cPZRqMg8QQ
The late Quincy Jones has said of Jacob, "I have never in my life seen a talent like this." The BBC aired an excellent documentary on Jacob a few years ago if you are curious: ruclips.net/video/ERvd5QjupSU/видео.htmlsi=5v-LLvdaDrHBO3I5
Jacob is one of those once in a century talents, I know just enough about what he does to know he shouldn't be able to do everything he does.
It's a reason Quincy Jones referred to his young friend as "The 21st century's Mozart".
I too found Jacob via Aurora. He is just mesmerising. That Chapel has just the right reverb, a Church may not have had enough and a Cathedral far too much.
Love this
Found this reaction a bit late. Couple interesting things. He has been playing guitar for about a year at recording ( he created his own tuning of course) and choir was made up of friends RUclipsrs and guests some who new they could sing and some who found out they could sing during filming 😀
Word is he has a lavalier mic hidden in his hat. You can also see him unplug his guitar at the end of the performance.
Search for 'Brixton Collier' and watch the audience choir recorded there. He does this audience choir thing at all his concerts now. Granted, people who go to his concerts are mostly musicians, but he can create this with any audience. No professionals necessary. Great reaction!
They are just people. He selected them from his followers list.
I agree they are _"just people"._ However, the story I read was not _"He selected people from his followers list"._ The story was he put out a call to his fans on social media to meet him at that venue *_later the same day,_* preferably wearing something blue. Dodie, the women second from the right in the group facing him, wearing a dark blue dress with a square cut neckline is a collaborator of years. So she likely had more notice than the others.
Best Wishes for 2025. ☮
We'd like to see your reaction to his live shows as well
Jacobs' hand made 5 string Taylor guitar
That was excellent!! What's with a 5 string guitar? Never seen that before.
He had it specially made and now has his own signature model.
ruclips.net/video/WknTbYOet4c/видео.html for the whole (rich!) story...
@@fliprim Thank you!!
Paul Simon!? I think of Jacob as more of a cross between the clarity of Art Garfunkel, the depth of Bryn Terfel, and the vocal genius of Bobby McFerrin. Thanks for your analysis. Next must come World Oh World. ❤
He did a cover of Coldplay's fix you. It is incredible.
billie eilish happier than ever 🙏🙏🙏
Since you said you liked Paul Simon you would enjoy Jacob colliers version of bridge over troubled water
I believe for this recording, Jacob put out a call on social media to his fans inviting whoever was interested to come and participate. So, no, they are not professional singers.
If interested in something similar, Jacob did an AMAZING rendition of the traditional folk song "Wild Mountain Thyme" at a concert with singers Laufey and dodie and the National Symphony Orchestra...oh, and the audience as well. It is one of my favorite performances of his - very emotional and beautiful! ruclips.net/video/Lz1LEYxFQ5Q/видео.htmlsi=xmgnm0AKf9Blbhzv
Dodie is in the center section, front row, wearing black.
Did you notice the 5 strings guitar 😉
💙
His mic was in the beanie
I get a Peter Gabriel vibe off his voice in this performance.
I'm just gonna leave this Jacob playlist here... do with it what you will ruclips.net/p/PLnzxhNlIjj1qJXZjImm5oaRwbSRQrRTLx&si=RHEQigfIa_twGsh-
Yes, just dressed as people as all he asked was that they wear blue if they had it.
Not professional singers. Very little time spent on rehearsal. He does concerts where he directs the audience,
"Not much of a dresser"? Why do you need to diminish someone just because they're different?
People can express an opinion on clothing choices or make an offhand joke without it being a diminishment of the person. I doubt you have gone through your whole life having never said that you thought someone was dressed oddly. C'mon.
Adam Sandler "isn't much of a dresser" either. Stating the obvious isn't an insult.
I've seen so many reaction videos to this video, and every reaction is precisely how I felt watching for the first time. An art form I feel flies under the radar is barbershop. Could you please do a reaction of Tim Waurick's rendition of Bridge Over Troubled Water? Its a beautiful arrangement and sung masterfully. Thank you in advance!!
