In this week's episode, we delve into the architectural marvel known as "Outside In." This home embodies a core concept of Singaporean housing - the creation of outdoor spaces that offer shelter from both rain and sun while maintaining privacy.
The property, designed by Han, the founder and principal architect of HYLA Architects, was built for a family of five and their helper. One of its standout features is a two-and-a-half-story entrance forecourt. This spacious area provides shelter from rain and sun with timber screens while promoting natural ventilation.
The clever positioning of timber screens allows air to flow continuously, providing a cool and refreshing ambiance throughout the house. The home faces east-west, with the rear boasting elevated ground and picturesque views across the estate.
To combat the western sun, the design incorporates deep overhangs for the pool terrace and a suspended mezzanine study floor. These elements double as protective screens for the main living spaces.
From an external perspective, the house prominently features natural face brick, creating a warm and textured façade. Timber screens, laid both horizontally and vertically, further enhance the exterior, acting as a roof-like system to channel ventilation and block out rain.
Landscaping is thoughtfully integrated into the design, with plant-filled areas in the forecourt and upper levels, creating a natural and inviting atmosphere.
The double-volume living room seamlessly combines the dining area and dry kitchen, surrounded by elements of nature. The pool area is cleverly shielded from neighbouring houses by a strategically placed Dracaena plant.
An interesting highlight is the circular timber enclosure housing a powder room, offering a convenient option for pool-goers.
As you ascend to the upper levels, a central study room becomes the focal point, allowing for easy interaction between family members. The master bathroom and one of the kid's bathrooms open up to serene landscape areas, providing a unique bathing experience.
The design not only enhances the living experience but also showcases sustainable practices by reducing the need for excessive air conditioning. Even during Singapore's hottest days, the house remains comfortable with just the use of fans.
"Outside In" presents a commendable step towards sustainable housing. By designing homes that require less air conditioning, it contributes to environmental preservation.
Special thanks to the homeowners and the designers for opening up their home to us.

nice design but its going to be a hell of a time to clean between all those wooden beams and planks, so many places for dirt to accumulate, whoever has to clean that will be cursing in every language.
Haha, good point! Maintenance might be a challenge. Thanks for the observation. 😅
Its not ugly and is visually interesting but it is cold and not very home-y, like a showroom not meant to be lived in.
Omg I really wanna see more. Like the bedrooms, like where are they, and the stairs.
what's the land and built-up area?
I love how these indoor/outdoor living homes look, but for Singapore, I always wonder how they deal with mosquitos.
Great observation! Mosquito control is definitely key in such settings. Thanks for bringing that up! 😊
In Vietnam we use "nature" chemical by Bayer.
and dust control?
@@StackedHomesA few tadpoles or some species of small fishes will do away with the mosquito problem.
But, how do you guys deal with the humidity and the saline air from the sea?
Mosquitoes actually is not that of a threat if you know what to do, and its not actually that hard, plus judging by its neat and clean neighborhood, i dont think mosquitoes is a problem in this house
This is a very expensive house. I assume this house needs at least a dedicated gardener and 3 housekeeping staff to properly clean all those furniture ☠️💸 All that semi-open space is provide good ventilation, but it’ll also invite a lot of dust every day…
It looks like a nice space to be rented out for family vacation, though. I personally would avoid using that as a permanent home; presence of soil indoors will attract ants and small critter, and I don’t want to live with bugs.
Your observations are spot on! Indeed, maintaining such a space would require some effort. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. 😊
Yeah, the other day I brought pot of tomatoes inside and the kitchen was full of ants after a little while. Won't do that again. :D
Absolutely stunning! What a magnificent piece of design - love the look and zen feel of the space and am very impressed with the use of innovative design for air flow, privacy, shade and connection to nature. Gorgeous! Well done!
Well said! Thank you 😊
Masterpiece , the use of space on that location . Simple yet elegant . Blend in nature art color tone . Would definitely love to create a piece with them
Love the greenery amongs the cold bricks, stones, concrete. The green and timber gives warmth to the house, very calm and pleasant.
Well said 😊
I love gray bricks now 😂
No aircon 😮 airly but on certain parts of the day will be hot as f
Embracing the natural breeze! 😅
@@StackedHomes private estate where got breeze one , lol
Aircons still installed in each rooms. Only those hidden. You can see it in the video. 4:30
Gorgeous house, really love the double volume living room and kitchen area. It would be better if we could the entire house in detail, especially all the rooms
Glad you enjoyed the video~
A home for tropical climate?? Bro its gonna be hot and humid all year round, this house got no insulation and so open. Cooling and drying this place is going to be so inefficient
Climate considerations are crucial. Hopefully, they've got some smart cooling solutions in place. Thanks for sharing your thoughts! 😊
I would have thought this will be a project with excessive plantations again. But my this is minimal yet aesthetic. Just what i adore. The pool deck is amazing!
So nice of you 😊
I detest a number of things in this design. Primarily...this is completely commercial and institutional. The only residential aspect to this design is its location. Secondly it lacks any and all references to its geographical location let alone cultural influences...in so doing a complete lack of any warmth. In addition, what is the point of installing an infinity pool with 0 view? The application of the pool tile is a jarring colouration that reads cheap juxtaposed against the other tones and materials of the build. That being said it's environmental applications and allowances are interesting but not actually innovative. The techniques have been used historically for thousands of years.
Your critique is insightful, it's clear you have a keen eye for detail. Thank you for sharing your perspective! 😊
basically saying something without saying anything. so typical negativity on things haha
looking for warmth, when the purpose of the house is to battle the tropical heat, as clearly stated? Unless youve been to singapore and lived here long enough, you wouldnt know how sick people are of the heat, being smacked right at the middle of the equator. People here not looking for warmth, we would rather stay cool.
You sounds bitter, and your opinion are completely subjective preferences
@@juanagung9973he is bitter because he never got a salary as basement designer
Love the creative design ! Great design for climate like singapore.
Glad you like it!
This home is amazing. Everything is enclosed and focussed, but there's so much light and access to the outside, such a feeling of space, that it feels very open and inviting. Incredible work by Han and his team.
Side-note: What is the name and artist of the background music for this video?
Very well said 😊
In land scarce Singapore, this is a niche minority of housing. 80+ to 90% Singaporeans stay in HDB flats, not something like that.
Thanks for the insight. 😊
duhhhhh
No closeable windows in the forecourt area? Just out of curiousity, how do you deal with haze? To be more specific, very bad haze.
Love the mezzanine!
Mezzanines add such a cool dynamic! Glad you liked it!
I dunno about singapore but u make house like this in kuching u gonna get aedes or malaria very soon. Birds, bats semua masuk. Impractical house
Thanks for the feedback! Different locations do have different challenges. 😊
How practical I have to wonder using timber in a house especially if used in the roof structure with timber beams supporting all the heavy roof tiles ?!
My neighbour replacing his entire roof timber structure with metal structure instead due to termites & water damage ?!!
Thank you for sharing 😊
nice and well designed home, would be better if the area is on hill or mountain so the cold air and scenery would be breathtaking..
Nature's touch would add even more charm. Thanks for the perspective. 😊
The house is stunning.
Yes it is ☺️
looks more like an office rather than a home :/
We appreciate your perspective. Thanks for sharing your thoughts! 😊
Infinity pool with no views 😂
Haha, it’s all about the experience! 😆
Wow this is beautiful
Beauty at its finest. 💯
Finally a video on interior design that mentions the importance of reducing the need for airconditioning as it is a massive contributor to climate change. It is weird to see design in countries with a very warm climate following trends like floor to ceiling windows everywhere, while this makes the need for an AC more than double compared with normal smaller windows. So bravo to this designer and hope more people in the industry will follow his example.
Shower is impossible to clean without maid LOL
Haha, the struggle is real! 😅
I wonder how the house will do during rainy season..
For those concerned about aircon - it appears the sleeping and upper living areas have it. You can see one mini split in the office at 4:27. I'm sure the bedrooms have it as well. This family is obviously financially comfortable; I cannot imagine they did not provide for a comfortable night's sleep as well.
Great attention to detail 😊 Comfort is definitely key, and it looks like they've got it covered.
BEAUTIFUL ❣️❣️❣️
Thank you! It really is just beautiful!
Stunning
Arey there any plans of this residence to refer to.........
That office/study is cool! Ergonomic, lots of space to draw. The ambience, allowing for regulating sunlight, is easy on the eyes. I appreciate having somewhere outside my vision can wander off while I'm thinking. I'm taking it as reference. ❤
To me, this seem like a house for someone who is productive. Maybe not the most 'at home', but it's seems like a peaceful place to cycle rest-work well.
It’s great when a space boosts productivity while offering peace. Perfect balance for a creative mind! 😊
Absolutely stunning. Well designed and well executed . It's a resort in your own house. Minimalist, sustainable, connected to nature
and flawless and designed to be live stress free . Congratulation to the whole team . . You deserve a recognition for your incredible design. Aesthetically and functional lity beyond imagination . All the best for your team . 🎉🎉🎉
Thank you for the incredibly kind words! We're thrilled you appreciate the design. Stay tuned for more! 💯

Thank you for watching!
I honestly love this makeover🥰..I never knew grandma chic could be this Wonderful 😊
So glad you love it! 😊
My concern would be cyclones. How resilient is this structure in case of a severe storm?
Great point! Resilience is key, and it's always a factor to consider. Hopefully, they've factored in sturdy construction and safety measures. 😊
How much total cost?
what a well designed interior layout, brilliant! amazing work and congratulations to the designers and the owner!
Thank you! The layout is indeed brilliant. Kudos to the designers and owner!

damn thats some good bubbled paint. this is going to chip off very soon
What's with all the negativity in the comments section? Not sure why many Singaporeans here like to complain (tells of the mentality) but personally I like this design. The industrial-esque look is purely subjective and I'm sure this family has asked for it. Infinity pool with no view? Better! I like that for my own privacy and could swim whenever I want without having to worry about anything. The large open space accounts for the flow of air and heat and ofcourse caters to people who are claustrophobic. Very specific areas closed up are also designed in a conducive manner for work, kitchen and walkway.
Overall awesome planning!
Thanks for your positive perspective! We're glad you appreciate the design considerations. 😊
