The reason why the sounstrack is so shamelesly Castlevania is, that it was created by Michiru Yamane. She created the Soundtracks for several Castlevania Games, like Symphony of the Night. Her style is quite memorable for me. I noticed that she created the Soundtrack for Skullgirls on just a few seconds of gameplay.
When I learned that Yamane-san was part of this, my wish to have the game got multiplied by 50. Requiem for the gods will always be one of my favorite song in any video game, and knowing I will be able to listen to her creations once again excites me immensely. Just one week before switch release
As copied from the internet: This dates back to at least 1672, when the term 'as keen as mustard' is first recorded. I hope Jim will be reviving more obscure phrases in the future.

What's this? A Kickstarter darling that actually delivers on its promises? It's sad that I'm genuinely surprised at that. We had been burned so much already...
This project gave us a lot of scares, though. It's a 2015 Kickstarter and the game was supposed to be playable exactly two years ago. So many delays. My bestie had almost written the game off. Thankfully, all's well that ends well. The game is here and it's way better than I expected! (And I've played the amazing spinoff, Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon.)
@@Jonas_Fox I only made it to the second save point so I dont know. The intro seems interestung enough. Seems like it could be another Castlevania game if you replace certain names with Dracula, Belmont or Cult Leader.
I'll wait for it to come out on Switch. Lord knows I need something other than Darkest Dungeon, Enter the Gungeon and Breath of the Wild to play on it... >__> Two of those I already have on steam! XD At least there is a new animal crossing next year.
Yeah might 9 really proved that just because some one worked on a team making a game previously doesn't mean they have any idea how to do it themselves. I mean those teams are often filled with hundreds of people, trying to claim just one guy made that much of a difference and could reproduce the same game on their own or with a new team is a joke. Frankly the only game designer/director/producer I would put that much faith in is perhaps Kojima and the metal gear series. But for every one else they are not that important. All those kick starters based around people who merely worked on a project before proved to be mostly a lie as they lacked the ability to manage a budget, code, or design the game on their own.
@@grizzl360 The funny part it wasn't even the worst one. It did at least come out and it's crowd funding was pretty tame. It didn't keep asking for more money, get publishers etc. By far some of the worst are things like Unsung hero in which they blew all the money and then just dropped the project years later. Someone else picked up (last I heard) but they had to scrap everything and start over. Then you have that spaceship game I forget the name of, Starfield or what ever. Highest grossing kick starter ever, constantly asking for more money and yet it's still lacking in so many ways and no where near close to being done. Oh and MTX are insane with ships that cost thousands of dollars that I highly doubt will be removed from the game if it ever gets "finished".
I'm both happy and unhappy to hear this, happy since i pre-ordered this game and unhappy since i pre-ordered a physical version which is not out until 28th.
"Aesthetically amazing and true to the spirit of the series that this *definitely* isn't" Gotta love how much we the players have to bend over backwards to get the games we *actually* want to play... The AAA industry certainly isn't interesting in making any.
Well, it's a difficult bargain. I'm not sure I ever would have asked for the reboot of God of War, but I absolutely loved it. Fans don't always know what they actually want (despite thinking they do), and it's very possible something like this wouldn't have done well. Fortunately they had Kickstarter. It's success might trigger others. It's why RTS seems to be dying. There are obviously enough people likely willing to buy and play a good one, but it's still a risk for a major studio to make one.
@@granthamlin8126 but publishers are releasing so few games now. They don't have to put all their money and focus on huge games that have to make boatloads of money. Making a RTS isn't a huge investment but instead we get mobile game versions that they can heavily monetize.
@@granthamlin8126 God of War isn't a good example because Sony is actually still letting devs make focused singleplayer games. Konami and others just don't make anything like that anymore, it fucking sucks
@@rio-kt7ut I would argue that part of the problem is saying an RTS (or other genres) isn't a huge investment. Honestly, it should be. That's how we get games like StarCraft 2. Would like your thoughts Jim. Deplatforming, also known as no-platforming, is a form of political activism or prior restraint by an individual, group, or organization with the goal of shutting down controversial speakers or speech, or denying them access to a venue in which to express their opinion.
When I got to the point where I had to grind for power-ups I marveled on how _quick_ and _fun_ it was. "This is the exact opposite of how freemium games work" was my thinking. Also...I'm wondering if that's _your_ portrait in the Millionaire's Bane room.
Jim, I'm hoping that you can clarify this whole Carlos Maza thing. No one should be censored just for their thoughts. I just hope that you can see the deplatforming entire teams of people, simply by spurious accusations of one person is just not on... no matter what their sexual preference is.
I like positive Jim. It is like the comady relief before the climax of a film where someone dies and it makes it hit that much harder. Also I am engaging with your video by commenting so that RUclips likes you more.
I've been waiting for your Jimpressions of this game. Thank you for continuing to share your positive views on games, even if they don't get as many views. Also, this was actually at the top of my RUclips home page as the first recommended video, so that's nice.
One thing I really liked about this game was the cooking system and how you get permanent stat boosts from eating a recipe the first time. I'm normally not one to enjoy grinding in games but when I needed to, the cooking turned grinding into more of an activity than a repetitious chore.
Hell, not just fairly famous (dare I say iconic?) enemies like Axe Knight - some dead ringers for more obscure Castlevania monsters appeared in this video, like Sword Lords (the fella that goes "OOOOH!" at the beginning) and even Buel (split between the Buer and Decarabia). ...wait, was that a Shovel Knight? God DAMN this looks good.
There's still hope that Jim's just grossly misinformed on the situation. I mean, he used to be okay with Epic Games Store and refused to speak about them stealing people's information for a few months.
We refuse to leave Silent Hill to those bastards. We need a kickstarter for a spiritual successor for either or and I’ll easily back $500 and I’m poor lol
IngyB I love Suikoden 3 and it’s my favorite. But come on, Suikoden V is top tier and Suikoden IV may be a shitty Suikoden game, it’s still a great JRPG on its own merits especially compared to other games at the time.
@RAGman Some context about what the morons have done would be appreciated. I would like to know more about what happened and I'm kind of living in a rock right now.
@@MrZalgo-ml2iw basically what's going on is that games are being kickstarted (Often for a lot of money) advertise that they'll be on steam at release, and then within a month or two (in some cases less) of release, they reveal they accepted a cash buyout so the game will not be available on Steam anymore, and only on the epic store. Refusing to refund anybody who pre-ordered on steam. Shenmue 3 is just the most egregious example at the moment, but there have been others.

This game is a good learning lesson for other old developers that came back to kickstart new game titles. Iga and company did a good job at keeping to the core game mechanics they laid out and kept feature-creep to a minimum if none at all. Everything in the game serves a purpose and it's snuck in a slew of easter eggs to give this game it's own character and charm. Now just clean up the Switch and everyone is good to go.
I love how the major Kickstarter game projects are perfect shadows of the company they left. Mighty No. 9 proves that Capcom has good reasons for reigning in ambitions, and while it might be strangling at times, they do have sage advice guiding their projects. Bloodstained, meanwhile, proves that Konami is is Konami and Konami is the worst.
I've never played Mighty No. 9 but I've heard horrible things about it. Knowing that Inti Creates was making Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon (RotN's spinoff) I was really apprehensive when the game came out. Turns out CotM is bloody amazing and a great appetizer before jumping into RotN. It's so good, I was left wondering what went wrong with MN9...
Agreed. We have too many cases of kickstarters either failing or outright ignoring and betraying their backers. Success stories like this one are really hard to come by. Now the main question is did they hold true to all of their kickstarter goals.
I feel you. I was supporting the project with all my heart as I unfortunately couldn't do I think with money but I was so anxious about it failing. I am so glad to see people enjoy it. The tricky part is to not being spoiled while looking for people responses for the game at launch.
@@Abhishek-fe3zs I really hope it is manageable. I don't own any other console, though and I doubt my now ancient PC would do better. Jimbo Sterlunk you rotund royal you, just so ya know that sound effect from the beginning is a modernized version of the Vandal Sword enemy from SotN who had a very similarly hammy death shout if I remember correctly. Just felt that was important to mention because good lord this game has soul.
So, fun fact, the cats in portals and dogs heads on chains are actually part of the backer rewards! On the kickstarter campaign they actually had rewards for backers to have one of their pets put into the game as enemies and those are the result!
You know it genuinely shocked me that the man who has cried out for game developers to not be fired for no reason, someone who would defend someone's workers rights to not lose their living despite doing nothing wrong end up supporting Carlos Maza and his campaign of deplatforming and demonetisation. To be clear I'm not referring to Steven Crowder when it comes to this, I'm referring to all the collateral damage, all the people completely disconnected to the situation that have been hit by the Vox Adpocalypse. Undoubtedly. I'd love to have heard IGA's response to their disgusting offer to sell out his audience for a few extra bucks, because the man just does not give a fuck.

Best game ever, shovel knight is in it
D-did I just see a shovel knight demon!?
Yes you did. I remember twitch stream a couple years back yacht club games was promoting Shovel Knight in Japan and they had IGA as a guest he was really impressed with the Spectre Knight stage
You even get his armor. To play as him.
Shovel Knight mode being the new Old Axe Armor mode is possibly the greatest thing I've heard about this game and I've heard a lot of great things about this game
As copied from the internet:
This dates back to at least 1672, when the term 'as keen as mustard' is first recorded. 'Up to mustard' or just 'mustard' means up to standard in the same way as 'up to snuff'. 'Cutting' has also long been used to mean 'exhibiting', as in the phrase 'cutting a fine figure'.
I hope Jim will be reviving more obscure phrases in the future.
PERFECT profile picture!!!
Haven't heard Jim this happy since Nioh (and rightly so, that was a gem)

Everyone getting a physical copy in the EU is having them shipped through DHL and most of the tracking numbers are broken.
Refreshing the page to nothing makes me go *OUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHH*
I’ve gotten packages before through dhl that never became traceable. terrible system they have.
I've had DLH email me saying my package was out for delivery, and to expect it that day... The day AFTER I'd already received it.
I got it, but not the slipcover. I take it the Dark Grimoire edition is sent out later.
Gotta invest in that ups my english brethren.
It is multiplatform?
What's this? A Kickstarter darling that actually delivers on its promises? It's sad that I'm genuinely surprised at that. We had been burned so much already...
My feelings, exactly. Seeing a super hyped Kickstarter deliver is such a novelty these days that it's a breath of fresh air.
"Because you can do that" Some developers should remember that this is one of the main reasons players do stuff.
Started playing this morning before work and almost decided I dont need work.
Jim never covered story. Does it seem put together? Symphony had such a strong story it could later be used for the Netflix series.
@@Jonas_Fox I only made it to the second save point so I dont know. The intro seems interestung enough. Seems like it could be another Castlevania game if you replace certain names with Dracula, Belmont or Cult Leader.

I was a bit worried about this one after the whole Mighty No.9 debacle. I'm glad it turned out alright.
@@JustaGuy_Gaming I would put Miyazaki at that tier as well, he really knows how to direct a generic game into something so much more.
The most good that come from Mighty No.9 is that it acted as a cautionary tale to other Kickstarter runners. Talk about a cloud with a silver lining.
I can no longer unhear Randy Savage whenever I kill one of those larger skeletons. Thanks for that, Jim (and thank God for Jim).
I had *very* high expectations for this game. It exceeds all my expectations easily. *Very* easily.
I'm both happy and unhappy to hear this, happy since i pre-ordered this game and unhappy since i pre-ordered a physical version which is not out until 28th.
Kiss-Shot Acerola-Orion Heart-Under-Blade You can do it...
"Aesthetically amazing and true to the spirit of the series that this *definitely* isn't"
Gotta love how much we the players have to bend over backwards to get the games we *actually* want to play...
It needs to really be a focus, but publishers are too scared to do it.
And you think publishers are releasing fewer games? I'm not sure that's true. I guess I'd have to look at the numbers. I feel just as overwhelmed by new releases as I ever have (ugh, March 2020), so I don't personally think there's less.
There just needs to be more risks taken, I think.
@@granthamlin8126 I mean konami's output of games is beyond pathetic. I don't know the numbers on other publishers but EA and Ubisoft aren't exactly releasing diverse games, only things they think have broad appeal

@@themagictheatre2965 While others have commented on the cat itself, I *believe* they've said that either there won't be any actual backer-exclusive items, or the backer-exclusive items will be cosmetic variants of items in DLC packs - basically saying that they don't want someone to feel excluded from getting the full experience just because they didn't find out about the game in time.

Matt Pando He’d probably justify it by accusing people of “hate” and “bigotry”. The usual smears people use to try to censor other people these days.
The mods in his subreddit are banning anyone that mentions it. Full damage control right now.

One thing I really liked about this game was the cooking system and how you get permanent stat boosts from eating a recipe the first time. I'm normally not one to enjoy grinding in games but when I needed to, the cooking turned grinding into more of an activity than a repetitious chore.
Props to my man, David Hayter, giving a middle finger to _everyone_ who was there when he was at Konami. Revenge tastes sweetest, when served cold.

I’ve been a supporter of you since your early days at Destructiod Jim.
Today I feel slightly ashamed of that.
There's still hope that Jim's just grossly misinformed on the situation. I mean, he used to be okay with Epic Games Store and refused to speak about them stealing people's information for a few months.
Meanwhile Konami attempts to make another Contra game and it isn't being received that well.

Suikoden died after part 3 sadly.
IngyB I love Suikoden 3 and it’s my favorite. But come on, Suikoden V is top tier and Suikoden IV may be a shitty Suikoden game, it’s still a great JRPG on its own merits especially compared to other games at the time.

Jim Sterling: this is what you wanted
Me: *Ode to Joy playing at the loudest possible volume*
Robert Belgrade the voice of Alucard, David Hayter the voice of Solid Snake in the same game. Is just gaming GOLD!
I'm happy it turned out to be good. It's not my game, but I'm happy for the backers and all those who believed in the project.

Oh my god look at that background. That's amazing.
So, fun fact, the cats in portals and dogs heads on chains are actually part of the backer rewards! On the kickstarter campaign they actually had rewards for backers to have one of their pets put into the game as enemies and those are the result!
I love hearing you be so happy! I'm glad something came up Jim recently :)
Not only does her "KILL THOSE MURDERERS DEAD" line is on the verge of a very memetic mutation, her list of dead folks also refers to all of Castlevania characters. Basically, the Demons are Konami and she is asking you to avenge what they did to Castlevania, and to me there is no better Fuck Konami gesture than that.
