I think it actually is a revolution in parts. We're gamifying combat down to the chance of misfire for individual guns, yet conversations barely have anything, mechanically. Games like this are a good step to rectify this, make those more interesting. I feel this aspect is something games neglected for so, so long.
Exactly, not to mention the setting. Bombastic war-dramas and fantasy adventures have been done to death while period-piece costume dramas are pretty much uncharted territory as far as video games go.
Yeah, I think there's a lot to be said for games that take "minigame" mechanics and turn them into the basis of an entire experience. When you can refine that mechanic a bit more, it becomes much easier to understand how to make smaller things a nice, deep part of a broader experience. Even if the game itself isn't something everybody's going to play, it's definitely something worth doing.
Yeah, kick out Cage, and give these devs Quantic Dreams and their production value, and they would make something special.
L.A Noire was a treat, and usually I love playing the persuasion dude in RPG's, so yeah I'd enjoy well written and tense talking games.
He mentioned it but I'm noticing a distinct lack of Duke Amiel du H’ardcore on The Council.
Maybe he's DLC?
He's kept in the back, away from the servants, due to his habit of prancing about in naught but his wig and a cape, doing something he refers to as the "helicopter."
What an affront to not invite him to the Island! I am OUTRAGED
Duke Amiel du H'ardcore Simulator 2018.
Also, I think the in-game version of Napoleon might be one of those incel people.
Oh he's in there. He's the big guy's right hand man. How much you interact with him so far is determined by choices and skills. I noticed Jim chose the option to hang out with him and the cardinal instead of George Washington and the English Duchess (whose name I forget). He probably didn't include that since it can be a mild spoiler for those who choose the other path.
On the other hand he included the fight with the French guy, which is another one of those specific branch paths... so who knows?
The faces in this are... a little off, but that woman in the bustier is on point. Guess we know where the devs spent their time.
Nope, thats just english males, islands limit genetic diversity ;)
Philip Dijkstra Which explains why they resort to a variety facial hair
The animation could be better, but the faces are pretty good with that atrstyle they went with.
well those aint all english.. a -fre- corsican guy is there too
I don't want to stare at Gregory...I want to stare at Emily.
The first thing that comes to mind is "My face is tired."
"If you are not trained in politics, you cant have a political conversation." i wish that was the case in real life
Wertyloaf Amen friend
Wertyloaf
Why would you want that? Because people will have different opinions?
Knights of the Nine I think they are referring to the people who discuss politics while not knowing anything about the issue they’re discussing. They just blindly scream their “opinion”
Then politicians would get away with even more, I'm sure they would Love to openly speak in a language that no one would understand.
If only.
I'll wait for the battle royale mode.
Adam Carrigan battle royal game fuel times 2 loot box extravaganza
They fear bluehole's lawsuit man
Fucking loser
I was HOPING you'd cover this game, Jim. I'm always interested in detective games, so this caught my attention. I'm not sure if I'll play it, though I'm interested in studying its game mechanics.
Vampyr jimpressions please!
its slow and devoid of atmosphere
Quixotic Vampyr is the textbook definition of atmosphere.
Great game if you have any interest in the genre, highly recommended
Awful combat, okay NPC talking.
Andrahil just in case he doesn't cover it: it is boring because of the bad pacing of the game structure and storyline, the graphics are last gen looking which sucks but at least it runs well because of that and the combat is terrible because of floaty, clunky, unresponsive controls. That's my impressions after 2 hours of gameplay, got a Steam refund after that, and a 3 hour livestream I watched.
Good insight for mentioning White Wolf since these developers are now working on Vampire: The Masquerade - Swansong
Fitting that he mentiones White Wolf, because there is going to be a Werewolf: the Apocalypse video game made by the same company (supposedly) that made this game.
This episode reminds me of reading old gaming magazines in the library or watching Tilt.
Just finding out a cool unknown game and hearing/reading cool and good impressions of it.
Kinda gives me nostalgia and a warm feeling
Not sure about the context, but _connexion_ is the French word for connection, and since a lot of the characters are French (including the protagonist Louis) it's possible that's more of a stylistic choice than a spelling error. I find it way more obnoxious that Louis de Richet sounds more like a somewhat bored present day American than an 18th century Frenchman.
setech connexion is also an old fashioned way of spelling it in English. Maybe that's what they were going for, considering the setting.
The french leaders during this era were actually quiet educated, the revolutionary government was based exclusively around enlightenment ideals. To display them this way is to tacitly dent that despite the outcome Robespierre and his government were a force for liberation from a frankly worse off government before hand.
People don't like it when history is complex, so we portray it as black and white. Also in the news; water is wet.
As an Englishman 'The Council' sounds like the most mundane game ever.
I miss Commentocracy :(
thought that was what this was, learned it wasnt, left video sad
Matthew Breen
even after one episode he kinda did all he could with the concept
There were 12. There are more coming.
I don't it was getting boring and repititive
If you miss it, then start saying dumb shit in the comments and maybe he'll make another one.
It was Werewolf: The Apocalypse, if we're talking about Classic World of Darkness.
Werewolf: The Forsaken was the vastly inferior sequel, where they took all of the elaborate world-building and replaced it with angst. They also took all of the unique opportunities for constructing all kinds of different plots and replaced them with angst.
It's pretty telling that Old World of Darkness's Werewolf setting was that the planet was dying and the earth was hurtling towards an unavoidable doomsday, and that was _nowhere near_ as grimdark as Werewolf: The Forsaken.
The game really amps up in episode 3 for sure. I played this game at the end of 2018 and I still havent forgotten about it.
DLC: Marik's Evil Council of Doom ... I'm sorry haha
I like the facial design in this
You mean the way they made everyone ugly as fuck? I like the way it looks, genuine question :)
Although I love your humor, informative videos on games you enjoy and want to highlight are where you really shine you beautiful man.
"connection" with an x might be intentional. Archaic spelling.
Yeah. I remember that from reading something in my anthology of british (might have been american) literature
Thanks for making this vid Jim, I feel like this game has enough going in its favor to fill that mid tier game slot we need more of these days!
When I first heard about this game months ago, I knew it'd be right up my alley. This confirms it. Thanks, Jim.
"It's solid, it's fun, and it's mildly enthralling" is the perfect descriptor for most of focus's games
Perhaps this will serve as inspiration for something more memorable, something less technically flawed.
Agony is going to be a good jimpression. I can already hear jim shouting about that one.
Ultgamer cw I've heard a bunch of people are disappointed by that. Why?
The graphics have been heavily downgraded. Worse than watch dogs and the game is our right broken. It's so buggy. The game is far from finished.
"I have picked up two terrible games and only have "1 Blunder" left before my path branches off into the bad ending! I have placed my plans for the next Steam sale inside this droid (message) Help me Mr Sterling, you're my only hope!!"
Who came here after the Jimquisition on Telltale's closing? I did, mainly because this was recommended randomly just now.
For what it’s worth “connexion” is a legitimate but somewhat archaic spelling for connection. It’s how the word is spelt in lord of the rings.
Big Bad Wolf is a french studio. In french connection is written "connexion". This may explain the typo.
I've just saw the announcement that valve isn't going to moderate content on Steam unless its illegal or "straight up trolling" *and i cant fucking wait for the video on that*
I really liked how you reviewed this game without the usual humor (which i like, but not always). Very refreshing!
You should open a Pub called 'G'
I think you're 100% spot on with Detroit this time :D thanks for giving it a fair shake
Thanks for this video, Jim, The Council looks pretty interesting
"if you're not trained in politics, you can't have a political conversation" GOD, how I wish that were true about real life as well.
These dialogue options remind me of Long Live the Queen.
Bought it, love these sorts of games. Thank you for bringing it to my attention.
Those clipping complaints remind me of how much it bothers me that Link's hat clips through his shield in some (every?) games. THE GAME DOESN'T EVEN HAVE DYNAMIC PHYSICS. WHY IS HIS HAT GOING THROUGH HIS EQUIPMENT.
Well, last time I checked, model design and animation design are two different things, sometimes done by two different people.
So, this is Plato's Republic: Murder Mystery RPG edition? This is the best thing I never knew I've always wanted!
Connexion is an old spelling common in the 18th century, which this game takes place in--google "David Hume necessary connexion".
I haven't played a White Wolf styled video game since Vampire: The Masquerade. Their dialogue system was astounding.
I'll get this if it comes to the Switch.
I feel sad every day...but I see a jimpressions and I click on it just to hear that opening song
2:07 AAACTUALLY, "hoi polloi" is the opposite of "influential people". It literally means "the many", as in common rabble.
FYI Jim, "connexion" is actually an archaic spelling of the word - it's possible that was deliberate and not a typo.
connexion is the french spelling of connection, and it's a french studio...they just got confused with that freaking false friends
That's how connection was often spelled back when this game takes place, and for much of the 19th century too.
Lovecraft spelled connection with an X, and the verb "to show" like "shew". I think it's intentional archaisms, not mistakes per se.
Somewhere along the line Focus Home became my favorite western publisher.... what does this say about me?
Yay! The Council is being showcased!
The painting on the wall was used in the Skyrim mod 'Enderal' first, long before this game. what the asset nicking shit?
That's why making a telltale style game about androids is easier. You save a lot of money from facial expressions.
Also emotions. Emotions, emotions, emotions...
Now this is truly fascinating
Speaking of White Wolf, I'd love to play Exalted with Jim. He'd probably be a lot of fun in that epic game.
If it's anything like my council then I guess a lot of the puzzles will be pothole-based. Useless gits.
Conservative austerity policies, not your councils fault :)
One of the most british comments I've ever seen on this website. And as a fellow brit, I'm inclined to agree.
A very British comment would have been "Lawks a lummy, stroike a lioght guv'nr, Oh, begorrah potato! Jings, och aye the noo, leeks and dragons boyoh in the valleee. Thats a very British comment :D
I broke out into tears of laughter before Jim even said a word.
Might get this next week, though would prefer to have the whole package rather than one episode.
Also, connexion is a viable (albeit a bit archaic) spelling variant of connection. (I think based on french?)
Really? No one else mentioned it? Okay then...
Appearing in the game was The Incredulity of St. Thomas, aka “It’s just cosmetic!”
You should add liveplays of your roleplay to your channel. I bet Jim playing D&D would be great.
Saw Jesse Cox play this game, the voice acting is so funny, its like the so bad it's good. It's certainly got a lovable charm about it :)
Did you know that 'connexion' would have been a proper spelling of the word in the time period the game was set? Austen uses it routinely, as I recall.
Adrien Brody, is that you?
I like the visual design of the palace (or house, whatever).
thanks for the review, I will wait episode 3 to see if I buy the season pass.
Hah. Connexion was/is the name of the careers service run by my local council. They're not bad at spelling, they're just really committed to their theme.
Goya, one of the black paintings.
Holy SHIT!!! *HOLY SHIIIT!!!* These are the scariest faces I have EVER SEEN!!
Though the game underneath actually looks pretty cool! =D
1:19 basically a retextured Turian
God damn, the back hand to Detroit is real lol
Man, I really want to play this, but I'll wait until all the episodes are out before I get it. Nothing infuriates me more than having to wait a few months between each episode.
Sounds interesting, please do Agony when you have the time!
The faces are nightmare worthy
firebirdnewt o.o
Fitting avatar for that comment.
'connexion' isn't actually wrong but it is quite old-fashioned, borrowed from Old French - Jane Austen novels still use that spelling even in newer editions
Agony Jimpressions? I'd like to you tackle that bad game.
Regarding the spelling: I don't know about the rest of the game, but "connexion" was probably deliberate. It's an older spelling that was still used in Britain in mid-20th century (it fell out of use in the US earlier).
en.wiktionary.org/wiki/connexion
With "connexion" they were probably trying to be all "old english-y" since that's how that word was originally spelled...but that was like in the 1400s, so the characters in this game would've still spelled it "connection" so its a fail either way. lol
Connexion is an archaic spelling of the word now but it was being spelled that way long after the 1400s. There are examples of it being used in a contemporaneous manner in books by Charles Dickens and Jane Austen. So it does kind of work in game spelled the way it is.
It's not as archaic as you would claim it to be. Tolkien used that spelling in his work in the early/mid-20th century.
Google Ngram Viewer on "connexion" vs "connection" says that from about 1820-1845, "connexion" was the more popular spelling.
I don't think archaic is what it's about. "Connexion" is actually how it's spelled in French (even nowadays). It probably got left out during the translation, as simple as that.
It may depend- Jim mentioned other rampant typos, but now I'm wondering if those 'typos' were just old-timey spellings the devs included for atmosphere?
Jim, did you ever play The Wolf Among Us? It's my personal favorite Tell Tale game. And a surprising number of decisions are actually impactful and matter heavily.
Connexion is the old French way of spelling connection, this game uses a lot of old English.
I got confused originally too you see ;)
Invoking the White Wolf games is a good way to get my attention. I do love how those games make it possible to eschew combat entirely and yet still be challenging and exciting just with dialog, politics, and schemes. ... Though, to be fair, 5E D&D has improved dialog (roleplay) options and focus a heck of a lot over it's past incarnations so that combat doesn't need to be the sole focus.
If you like a fantasy take on real life events, you might like The Invisible Hours. It's more of a video than a game, but involves the murder of someone, and you get to follow each character and see who they are.
Jimpressions on Vampyr if you haven't got any other games in mind??
Connection is spelled with an "x" in French, and the developers from this are French, so they probably forgot to translate the word.
is that dude in 5:00 Lion from Dota2 pre "witchification" !? Edit the older model of lion especially!
Zeliek holy shit.
What the HELL
connexion is the french spelling, so i'm not surprised
Best out-of-context powdered wig ?
Malcom McDowell in "31" by Rob Zombie !
Thank god for you.
I remember seeing "connexion" in a paper published in the British journal of anthropology from around 1985. It was used purposefully, coming up at least 3 different times. So...not entirely ridiculous. Weird, but still not something they just made up.
So they make adventure games with suprising gameplay depth, or Blood Bowl? Pretty cool.
Jim you need to go back to some White Wolf pen and paper. Seeing you on a Rollplay or Geek and Sundry one shot would be a dream come true. As for Werewolf, The Forsaken is the nwod version The Apocalypse the owod version.
those faces ... i bet they're regretting taking HD to olden times
Oh, the faces. But I wasn't sleeping tonight anyway. As to the spelling, 'connexion' *is* a legitimate one - if underutilised in general. To the point my autocorrect finished putting it in for me even though I've personally never used it in my life.
Connexion is actually a valid, if rare, variant spelling.
Connexion is a variant spelling, and a valid, if old fashioned one. Its basically French spelling.
Seem interesting, I may buy it.
It's fine on PC.
Pretty good game, if you can get over the jank, it's pretty interesting. But... not finished.
Thought he was playing vampyr. Was all excited. I don't know what this game is... But I'll watch.
Beautiful faces in this game. I love em
This was a really well rounded review that's not a review.
The facial expressions make Mass Effect Andromeda look good! 👀
So far it sounds interesting.
Telltale Presents Assassin’s Creed Unity
Justin Ang That's what I thought aswell. Stuff characters , strange Hud . Ubisoft Game.
Connexion is a word that is just a fancy way of saying connection. I believe it was used in the book the idiot when I came across it and had to Google it myself at the time. Liked the video though and am sure there are other mistakes.
