In this video, we will discuss the changing times of 19th century fashion and how to tell the difference between the different decades. We talk about 1850s fashion and the influence of femininity and light flowing materials. Then in the 1860s where the large skit becomes the largest and we slowly see a shift of volume towards the back of the dress. Then to the left 1870s with vibrant details and batters with the emphasis wards the back increase steadily. In the 1880s the shelf like bustle appears with vibrant colorful fabrics and tons of ruffles and details. Then to the 1890s where the bustle disappears and the sleeve size grows dramatically only then to decline. We cover the civil war fashions, gilded age fashions, and the belle epoque fashions and dresses!

Love the Regency/Empire period from around 1795-1820. The silhouette for women was elegant but not over the top, hairstyles were less ornamental. The men's attire with the waist coats, breeches, boots, cravats looked beautiful as well.

Affordability wasn't a bad problem. The average price of a Worth day dress was 13 dollars, evening around 20 to 30. Full fur coats, about 100 dollars.
This was a time of no income taxes and millionaires. Changing clothes 5 to 12 times a day wasn't a money issue for the wealthy, so the clothing became an expression of wealth just as the home interiors.
To compare, for those who built the rocking chairs, a store bought dress from the dry goods store could be had for 89 cents, 3 dollars for a fancy church going type.
Yes, but for reference a lady's maid maid around 50 pounds for all year, a governess made 100 pounds/year. A man who worked in the gold mines made $5/week and that was considered really good money back then.
So, that $13 dress was equivalent to over 90% of one's income for the month.

Victorian women must have found the crinoline dresses attractive as they wore them for over a decade. They were very attractive, but very cumbersome to move in a confined space (railway carriage, cab or in the house). In particular they were a fire hazard. A spark or flame from an open fire would usually cause the wearer to burn to death. Perhaps this was one reason that the play of the skirt at the front was reduced during the 1860s, leading on to the first bustle stage, the princess stage and second more pronounced bustle stage. Provided you wore your corsets (you were improperly dresses without your corset) it must have been fun to promenade in the park on Sundays. And the evening gowns, were gorgeous. Being a rich woman in the Victorian period must have been delightful in terms of fun with fashions. Medicine, make-up and hygiene were totally different issues, yet to be resolved.

I feel like the dresses were high to the neck and sleeves so that the ladies would not show tanning because of their upper class status. I just wonder even with an "umbrella" they may still get slightly tanned and that's the reason for the white face paint they used that contained lead. Not good. I think women must not have ate very much food at all to carry off these designs. But that was before in the modern world all the poison in our food. I could go on but I love your videos!!

When watching dress style videos and realizing pocahontas 2 which is set during james 1 reign crenolins werent invented yet so she was wearing an 1850 dress lol.
Seems like the 80's fashion are a disaster in any century.
What about the 1780s??
One thing I can say is women went through a lot of trouble and discomfort that they put on themselves just to look "fashionable". Their clothes could have been simpler and more comfortable, but they chose the opposite out of vanity.
Fashion invariably is uncomfortable. How comfortable are 5 inch stiletto's?
