  • This is Alejo Garza Tamez. A 77-year-old Mexican businessman, rancher and hunter from Northern Mexico. He died defending his ranch against sicarios from the Los Zetas cartel.
On the 13th of November 2010. A convoy of sicarios showed to his ranch and told him they'd give him and his workers 24 hours to leave the ranch. Alejo then told his workers they could have the rest of that day and the next off. After his workers left. He began setting up his hunting and sport rifles in multiple areas around his house so he could take up different shooting positions when the sicarios returned.
The next day on the 14th, a convoy of about 25 sicarios showed up to his ranch and began firing warning shots into the air and proclaimed they'd take the ranch by force if he didn't leave. Alejo responded to them with gunfire. The sicarios than began returning fire with automatic rifles and hand grenades. The following shootout resulted in death of 4 sicarios as well as 2 others wounded. Sadly, Alejo also died from his wounds. Which was 2 bullet wounds one in his chest and other in his hand. He also had wounds from fragments of the grenades thrown into his home by the sicarios.
When the Mexican military arrived at the ranch they found his partially destroyed home. Infront of were bodies of the 4 dead and 2 wounded unconscious sicarios and inside the home they found the body of Alejo.
Don Alejo was brave man who fought the cartel instead of letting them get their way by threats of violence and terror. For this he's become a symbol of what bravery is amongst people who wish to stand up to against the cartels all around Mexico.
He has a song written in his honor. Here are lyrics in English.
They thought it would be easy to take over a ranch
They came in trucks and threatened an old man
They gave him 24 hours to vacate the ranch
It was the San Jose Ranch they were now under fire
Don Alejo Garza Tamez told them: “I’ll be waiting”
He put in the doors and windows all his firearms.
The sound of motors could be heard as the gunmen got closer. They thought they were safe and four fell dead, two were also injured but died on the way back
It was the last hunt for he was a man of his word
He created his own strategy to defend what he loved, and he told his employees that they wouldn’t be working that day.
Alone at his command post and very heavily armed with hunting rifles he managed to take them down.
He had good aim and hunted them like deer.
When the Marines arrived where this took place
They could not believe that one man alone could have done all this since almost nobody can face them. It was all and only Don Alejo.
They threw grenades and riddled him with bullets. But he died like a man, they couldn’t scare him. He was 70 and 7 years old. He was the example of an elder.
With honor and bravery and with lots of dignity
He fought like a soldier, he was a true friend
Throughout all of Tamaulipas his story will be remembered.

It’s a strange and pretty random post but in a way this man reminds me of my father, and even mi abuelo who passed away in a motorcycle accident on his ranch. Mexican fathers always going through some tough stuff and they’ll never show it. Not once have I seen my father cry, and I’m glad because I think it would destroy me mentally if I did. Pa works from rise til dawn and as a result he’s a bit awkward when it comes to interacting with his own family. When he’s in a good mood he’ll goof off and entertain the family. You couldn’t imagine what happens when he’s not smiling. From what I’ve heard, my dad was a crashout back in Mexico. I’d hear about how he’d get into brawls and fights because of family matters and other stuff like that. I’m glad he came to America and left that shit behind for me. I’ll never forget when my friends car broke down, and instead of calling a tow truck we called my Dad and he rolled up in his work truck with a couple of coworkers. They quickly got to work and attached the car to their truck using a rope, and they drove us to a mechanic with us inside the vehicle. That was probably highly illegal and dangerous, but it was still a great memory. I still love it when he takes me to do some side quests, I’ll hop in his old dirty truck and he’ll put on some corridos and other norteño shit on the radio and I’d vibe looking out the window as we drive into the California wilderness for him to go pick up some work equipment. Not sure if anyone will read this all the way through, but please go hug your pops and not just your mom because you’ll never know when you’ll see that car exit the driveway for the last time.
