    I've managed to trap 5 chipmunks and taken them for a little change of scenery. Set the trap in the backyard a little while ago but the chippy climbed ON TOP and AROUND but didn't go in. Sooner or later, that smudge of PB will look more and more appetizing!

    Put peanut butter or other bait on both edges of the paddle/trigger. Animals can lick the peanut butter off of one side without triggering the trap. Yes, I do know how to properly set the trap. Once they eat all the bait on one side of the paddle, they will move forward to get the bait on the other side, triggering the trap. I used to put the bait right in the middle of the paddle. Putting the bait on both sides really increased my catches. Got one today with this technique. I really like this trap. I have a different HAVAHART trap that has just one door. I have yet to catch anything with that. Perhaps the squirrels don't like going into a dead-end trap even if they can see through the screen/wire. I use Chunky peanut butter and sometimes I stick additional whole nuts into it to add to the appeal. Once the doors drop, I have never had a squirrel get out, and believe me, they have tried. One nice thing is that this trap does not hurt the owner. Lethal traps can always spring unexpectedly and get the owner. I am not speaking from experience. Squirrels do get on top of the trap on occasion, but they cannot get the bait because of the metal roof. They eventually figure out how to get into the trap. I sometimes get possums, which are definitely not cute by any stretch of the imagination. Happy Hunting!

    I have two different types of traps from this company and in 24 hours I have caught 5 squirrels and one possum. I got the 1025 and wish I had the 1030 some of my problem squirrels are huge fast and very intelligent. This has been trial and error but I have figured out which bait works and how to place it, so you get results. I have watched squirrels help each other to get the bait, one held the door open while one stole the bait, I’ve watched them dig under the trap, sit on top of the trap and eat, you name it and they will try to figure out how not to enter the damn trap. You might have to reset the trap over and over because they will trigger the trap sometimes and it happens to every body, I have two squirrels left to get and they are big and smart and one enters the trap grabs the peanuts and holds the trap door open with his tail and escapes, go figure. Wish I had the 1030 trap it’s a little bigger. Caught the possum with the 1092 and use old chicken bones as bait, next morning she was caught. So I baited the 1092 for the squirrel problem and I look outside and three squirrels are in the trap eating peanut shells and one is sitting eating on the trigger release and I guess he was just not heavy enough to activate the trap door, I missed out on getting three at once. But anyway use peanuts in the shell for squirrels and break the shell with your hands before putting it on top of the release mechanism. Also the bird seed with the black seed in it, use a combo of that and it works. Good luck.

      Why would you want to catch the opossum? They eat small rodents (among lots of other things), so seems like the opossum would be your friend in this situation.

    • @doublejake.4846
      @doublejake.4846 4 года назад +2

      Brian Monaghan It’s an easy explanation, the opossum was living under my parents deck and year after year having litters and dragging back dead carcasses(rabbits, squirrels, road kill) and it had become an issue. As of today I’m up to 18 squirrels caught and two opossum’s caught. The 1030 is awesome trap for squirrels gets them every time. My parents are 87 and 81 years old and don’t need a opossum living under their entertainment area or problem squirrels who have destroyed everything from sod, sprinkler heads, humming bird feeders and the list goes on and on. Both opossum looked like they had disease and mange.

    Thanks for posting this video. I couldn't figure it out but it was very simple with the video. I thought I had a mouse in my walk-in pantry for over 2 months now. He's driving my bulldog crazy because I had to put a gate up so my dog wouldn't get in the pantry and eat the poison or get into the traps. It's most active at night and we can hear him knocking food off the shelves all night. I finally saw him last night for the first time. It's no mouse. I've never seen a RAT so I flipped out when I saw this well-fed monster. He literally ran off and turned around and glared at me while running. GROSS!! Wish me luck. The only thing I'm not sure of is whether it's more beneficial to use one or two doors. Guess I'll figure it out.

    THIS is my favorite small critter capture design! I have the single sided models also and they are not as effective. Rats in particular seem to want to see "through" the trap and not have a closed in situation. These are easy to set and I can see from a distance if they have been tripped. I even place them in known runs without bait... it's great to see what wildlife is dashing around while having the option to release them... a perfect trap in my opinion.

      i use all time, and like closing the end. But I camoflauge it. Lots of twigs, leaves, grass around mine, so they dont see it. That is key and again, video doesnt tell. And wear gloves, as they smell human scent, so : i keep one door closed.

  • @johndonaldson5126
    @johndonaldson5126 3 года назад +8

    I have one of these to catch a squirrel. The problem is the distance from the tilting trigger is too short. The squirrel was able to exit. I think a trap with only one door, and the trip deep inside is a better design.

  • @elsanevis1151
    @elsanevis1151 4 года назад +4

    Make sure you tell folks (you dont) to always wear gloves. They smell human scent and will stay away. The seeds, peanut butter bait , and setting up traps, you have to wear gloves. (ps i also was doing bucket of water, (only half inch water, as I do not want them to drown, just want to catch them ). and that did not work. They ate bait, and were never caught. only thing that works is this trap. But i have TON of chipmunks, ruined by gardens, all of them, and lawn has 4 ft burrows. I have never seen so many chipmunks IN my life! So, with one have hart trap, I will catch them all by 2021. Lasty: camoflauge! you have to cover it with grass, twigs, etc so it does not look like this 'steel trap. THAT is key. So, HH, you guys: add these tips. I could write a book. Chipmunks: I tried hot pepper, mint, cinnamon, mothballs, you name it. For months. Nothing. Then: Bobbexx. Bobbex always works. Well, not this year! So, I caught 3 yesterday in hour. Camoflauge , and gloves. and bait is TINY ball of : peanut butter with sunflower seeds, with 1 seed every 4 inches, to lure..........them to trap. 3 seeds outside the trap, then inside, 1 seed........few inches.......another seed.........few inches....then put the bait on 'far side' of trap inside, vs close. And : viola! BUt: keep PB amounts small. With ton of PB , you get squirrels (which i dont want). I will let you know when my book comes out! I spent way too much time on this! And now: chipmunks know..but camoflauge set up and bait amount is key. LURE them.

    I shouln't have had to do all this research to find out how to use a product that I already paid for. Havahart should have included a video DVD with this trap. The instruction manual is very vague and completely useless. I even took it back to the store where I bought it with the instructions and three different employees were struggling to figure out and couldn't decipher the instructions. Thumbs down on Havahart customer service. If it weren't for this online video, I would have returned it and reluctantly resorted to using a conventional rat trap.

    Look at about 0:27. There are two rods that lock on the left side. If they are positioned improperly then the trap does not trip easily. The rod pointing away, pointing to the trap, must rest on the rod that turns and points outward. Then it trips easily. The video shows use of a finger to get the two rods to be properly matched up. I will try that tonight. I think it is also shown at 0:50 but the video flickers and is messed up at that point for me.

    The one door solution did not work for me. When the straight rod is located ABOVE curved rod (as shown on 0:55) - when trap is triggered the curved rod cannot go all the way up (gets blocked by straight rod) and the right door does not close all the way down, and therefore door lock does not engage.
    In order for right door get close all the way - the curved rod MUST sit above the straight rod, which is impossible for one door solution.

    The instruction booklet mentions the bait pan should be level when trap is set. This video shows differently. Look at 0:25 and notice the bait pan is not leveled. When the high side of the pan is pressed (i.e. by a rat), the pan rod goes up and will actually snag with the door rod, thus the whole lock is jammed and both doors stuck in open position. This setup may work with one door, but only 50% of success for two door depending on which side of trap the animal enters. A better way to set the trap is to position the pan rod against the door rod, opposite to what video suggests. The pan will stay leveled and will trigger the lock when either side of the pan is pressed.

    • @BearMountainMike
      @BearMountainMike 4 года назад +3

      That goes back to my point about how the written instructions are lousy. The instructions don't even tell you what position the bait pan should be.

    When people buy Havahart traps, they should use a permanent black marker to
    write the model number(which is always on the box) somewhere on the trap.
    Then after you throw out the box and later decide to do a video, you will know
    the model number of the trap you are demonstrating and you can include that
    in the video name. I have no idea why Havahart does not stamp every trap
    with the model number, so people would have this info for later reference.

    The only problem with these "live traps" is that in the hot summer months,
    people working normal jobs would probably put the trap out in the early AM
    and return to check the trap 8 hours later (depending on whether the animal
    being trapped is nocturnal or not). Doing that would cause the animal
    to suffer a slow torturous death. I am retired and I make sure to check my traps
    at the very least, every 2 hours, which is easy since they are at the base of my bird
    feeders and I can see them from our screened-in porch.
    Grey squirrels are only active during the day and when it is extremely hot,
    they tend to stay in their nests; so I take my squirrel traps back to the garage
    when it is over 80 degrees out. Thus most of June, July and August they are only
    set from about 6:00 AM to 10:00 AM and I still caught 23 grey squirrels in June
    with 2 Havahart model 1083 EZ-set traps. The 1083 is the best trap for grey
    squirrels by a wide margin.

    The model 1078 was the best one until they ruined the design. You'd have to catch a 40lb squirrel to trip that new bait tray lol

    Glah, flat end??? I'm going to file the ends so they are flat. I'm ready to drop kick this trap.

    My neighborhood squirrel is smarter than this trap because it doesn't catch him at all! Multiple times he got away with the bait!😆

    It’s too damn sensitive a squirrel just sniffing at it outside of it sets it off

    This thing sucks. Squirrel easily beat it by rolling it over on side.

    These things are great! They make it so much easier to shoot the little bastards after you've caught them. They're to hard to hit otherwise.

    WAY too small for a gray squirrel. Maybe ok for a chipmunk. Don't save money and buy a trap that's too small. It won't work. I do buy Hav-a-Hart traps.

    Now I can see why I only paid two bucks for this new trap in a thrift shop!!! This trap is almost impossible to get set!! Those "flat ends" mentioned in this video aren't matched flat to flat surfaces!! Once the trap is set. That flat side against a round opposing surface triggers the trap with the slightest motion! Out of frustration, i got out my dremmel tool and a grinding disc and put a black marking pen tip between the two "flat surfaces", marking both of them and grinding the two opposing surfaces flat to each other, the trap is finally set and presently waiting for rodent entry!! I suppose time will tell.....
    THIS TRAP NOT RECOMMENDED TO ANYONE WITHOUT A DREMMEL TOOL!!!!!

    Ok, am I the only one that 'sort of' felt a little bit disappointed that this trap LIKELY (*see below) will NOT trap two animals at once. From its physical appearance it looks as though it has two separate 'trap chambers'. *But, it IS effective for 'single animal trapping'.*
    And for around $20-$25, it's fairly cost effective for a trap that'll likely last 20-30 years if used/stored in places that aren't too damp/wet. Make sure to clean off any excess bait before storing it.
    *Note: The trap is CAPABLE of trapping 2 animals, but both animals would need to be feeding/or completely clear of the trap door simultaneously when the trigger plate is activated. You may get lucky if both animals (attic rats, in my situation) enter each side at the same exact time. Good luck!

    The trigger mechanism simply does not function as demonstrated. This trap is a worthless piece of s#eeit. I just smashed two of them flat that were purchased
    at Home Depot. Tripping mechanism does not balance correctly if at all; if it does, it springs before you set in on the ground. Absurd Rube Goldberg mechanism is
    an infuriating joke. The traps come come slapped together, with the lever arms and trip mechanism out of sync. I can't believe how crudely made and hopelessly
    non-functional this design is. Total waste of money. Impossible to set.

    This could not be more difficult to set up. The directions are like reading Asian when you are from Mars. You need to be a rocket scientist to figure this out...what left brained man thought this would be easy....for humans, I mean? And I paid $30 for this!
