All four Monkees doing "I'm a Believer" live in Birmingham, England 3-18-97. This includes Mike Nesmith who joined the group for a tour of Europe in the spring of '97.
To clear things up, this is all four of them. After reuniting for the "Justus" album a few months prior, they toured England in March 1997 and were supposed to tour the USA after, but Mike backed out -- the remaining three carried on without him. As for playing their own instruments back in the day -- Mike could play guitar and Peter some banjo, bass and keyboards...Micky learned to play drums and Davy stuck with the tambourine and percussion. They did play for real when touring 1966-1968.
How about this, trivia fans: I remember having a 45 with Micky singing lead before he was a Monkee. I was a fan from Circus Boy days. It was called "Don't Do It", and I'm pretty sure he played guitar on it. That was c. 1965. Geez, I'm old.
@cfortunato58 They really did play their own music live and sounded great..All the ppl that say they never played their own music never saw them play live in concert!
@SAHBfan I like his uniqueness playing the drums left footed but right handed. I noticed it years ago (in the 80s) and so then I started using MY left foot for the base. :)
Mickey is the Monkees answer to McCartney as a singer. And coping with drums as well. First time Ive seen Davy strumming though. But well done Mickey - convincing after all the years.
If Davy Jones is faking the guitar (and I don't think he is) then he's faking it correctly, something he never did on the TV show. They're actually playing the song! And good for them.
Mickey Dolenz is the only drummer I know who sets the top of the kit up and plays it right handed, but has the 'bottom' of the kit, the bass drum and hi-hat, set up left footed. Weird! He seems to be doing pretty well here, though :-)
@sshelget Are you left footed? The odd thing about drums is that it is one instrument that can be set up any way you like. Every drummer uses a slightly different set up, especially if trying to include lots of toms - but in reality they usually keep the fundamentals the same - it is very rare to swap the hihat to the right or put the floor tom on the left or something. Not sure why we don't see more variation...
Yeah I noticed he's just strumming. I myself am a Piano player, but can strum chords on a guitar, and noticed it's pretty easy to learn. Also, Davy is a pretty damned good singer too.
Why oh why do people constantly want to spell Micky -Mickey or Davy -Davy!! Come on if you are Monkee fans you know how to spell the names!! But this is a good video thanks for sharing on here!!
One of the best concerts I've been to, and I've seen many! :)
It's been 55 years since last I heard the Monkees sing this song. There's also a great, somewhat seductive cover in the movie, Letters to Juliet.
cool thanks for sharing!
they are really good! here's hoping for another tour soon! :)

I've seen recent photos (as in days ago) of Micky and he looks great and is nowhere near fat. You should hope to look so good when you're 62!
I had no idea they had toured that recently.
I guess sometime between 67 and 97 they took some lessons.
sweet

You'd think someone might have mentioned it, though...
'Hey, Mickey, the bass drum goes on the other side!'
