*** Quick Update *** You will need to put Downward Pressure onto the Control Arm to get enough clearance to remove the shock. I used a 1inch diameter pipe to do the trick. Might need a second hand for help.

Possibly in your case if your not getting enough clearance at the top of the strut to pull out, you might need to use a spring compressor to relieve the pressure for the shock to fully collapse. Remember to get that control arm all the way down while pulling out the shock assembly, that's where the "pipe" came in handy. Hope this helps.
