Love your guys banter and explanation about “it’s fun FOR ME!” I couldn’t agree more! But what I love about top whatever videos is learning about other games out there I may never have heard about which keeps me excited for the hobby!
i love your tangent on "not good for me" there is SO many amazing games, partly because there are so many diffrent ways/things people find fun. I tried Formage and I 100% understand the hype, but it was too much options to plan out for me. that does not make it a bad game, just not a game for me
Interesting when it comes to ark nova and castles of Burgundy i see it the exact opposite of Jeff. CoB felt same-y to me after a few plays but ark nova even after 200+ plays is still a different exciting efficiency puzzle every single time i play it. No other game even comes close. Its great how ppl can have such contrasting viewpoints in this hobby.
We got 3 Ring Circus for Christmas this year. I love it. I feel bad that some reviewers gave it a very bad review just because of the animals in the circus. Good grief, it is historically accurate, and they addressed it in the rulebook. So, unfortunately, Devir had to spend money making different cards of people dressed up like animals to replace the historically accurate animals to make everyone happy. (Ridiculous) There went the expansion, I guess! I would have loved an expansion to this game. I think Kosmos is selling it now in Europe. I hope it does well there.
Group dynamic is a very important part of getting new games, you are very right about that. As for your example with brian boru, i love the combination of mechanics and thought both my gaming groups would be into it. To my surprise the group i was expecting to like it more hates it and the one where i swear the mechanics mashup would throw them off love it. After my first play with my usual group went flat i was about to get rid of it but Im glad i gave it another chance with my second group. A big genre of game which lives and dies by this is negotiation games and i am very wary when deciding on getting any game with that in it.
My lists always shuffle around because I rank them based on how much I want to play them at moment of ranking, rather than the best games of all time. For some reason it makes the list way easier to make, and it also makes it more surprising for my viewers (if they’re even interested enough to pay attention to my lists from year to year 😂).
Oh my gosh!!! Is that the World-famous retro gaming streamer, Jeff from everyday magic? What a great guest Jamie. When there are so many games it is hard for even the great ones to stay in the top 50. I still haven't played 3 ring circus, it has been sitting on my shelf for quite a while. I am looking forward to it. I love the look and the theme. Have you played Altiplano? I got that instead of Orleans, as the theme looks cuter. I haven't played it yet, but hoping to soon. KAY!!!!
I remember really loving Orleans, but I recently played on BGA after years of not playing our copy and I was not as impressed. I want to give it another try on the table to see if it will be more fun again, but maybe we just have more games now that we enjoy better. 🤷♀️ We’ll see.
I don't know if it's because your studio is a work in progress, but I rather like the opaque black background with just the lamp, it makes you stand out from other RUclips channels that always have a very color busy and cluttered background, and allows for the viewers to focus on you on what you're saying, I might be wrong but it works for me :)
You hit it on the head with the group. I have games that I love, but only with others who also care. Marvel Champions is sooo good if you play with someone who is into it. But it is sooooo bad when the other person can’t live with the huge swings. I would dare say I won’t play it again unless it’s with someone who knows they like it.
We have a top 64 as we do a 64 game tourney each year. We are going to be dropping 17 games off of our list mostly due to a lot of new games that took their spots. We played Root for our first time this year and it did not go well as I completely did not understand my character (the owl) and had too many turns that I got to do nothing. We are hoping a 2nd play next year will go better. We played the digital version on steam.
The first command and colors game was actually Battlecry, which was put out by Avalon Hill and is civil war based. Then memoir 44, then command and colors: ancients. I always thought command and colors came before memoir as well, but it actually came out two years after.
I am surprised you haven't talked about War Chest. It would be right up Jeff's alley for being an area control war style game. You should try it out if you haven't! It's one of my favorites.
Also, I am in the exact same boat as Jamie with the Root problem! It's got the 'Smash Bros effect', if one or a few players have much more skill than other players it just can ruin it for everyone. It's designed to be that way and I am so intrigued by the prospect of enjoying it but our group is stuck in such a disparity of skill that it's tough.
Just starting to get into the small card games with my family this last month, and sea salt and paper has sky rocketed to the top as one of our go-to weeknight games, as is Scout. Will look into Skull King. Learned about the SSP expansion/booster pack yesterday actually. Not going to try that until we get burnt out on the game and that way it will give it some new spice. Have you tried the expansion for it yet, and if so what are your thoughts on it?
I love how GMT games get on Jeff's list. It makes me happy :). Yes, Andean Abyss was the first COIN game and Cuba Libre was #2. A Distant Plain was #3, for that matter.
I also suffer from anxiety, so Jeff and I have that in common too. I wonder if there's a relationship between the kind of games a person likes and their mental state. Hmmm.
I've been looking to get my butt kicked in Null & Nichtig for a while now, if you bring it. (I also think it was Matthew and/or Rodney who put that on my radar.) P.S. You didn't even mention Silver Bullet when talking about your annual card game obsessions. Respect the classics!
“Problematic” themes being a reason people dislike games (GWTe1, 3 Ring Circus, Jaipur, Castles of MKL, Puerto Rico) is my least favorite thing about the gaming space I think. Objectively speaking, of course.
@@FostertheMeeple 😂I knew you had a made a simple mistake but then I thought, they should just lean into it ... "While many choose to drop games from the their Top games list, we here at FtM choose to DOPP games from our Top 50, because it sounds cooler" LOL ... great video, btw
I love how people apparently still comment on your clearly objective perspectives, it’s like they must be new here. I mean I don’t always agree with your lists, but that’s obviously because my opinion is subjective.😅
So, you're saying you despise all of these games? 🙃 Our fam actually has a game of Wonderland's War set up and in progress. None of us even resonate with Alice in Wonderland; I never liked the book or the movie and it doesn't even matter. The game is just that freaking good.
The topic of this video is one reason I don't rank games :). However I am not required to do so by virtue of my profession :). Sorry, it's not easy, given that new games are always come out, some of them, will be in your top 50, and therefore some will drop off. You can't win.
Objectively, anyone who uses the comments to explain proper vocab usage on an obviously sarcastic and ironic use of the term is a clown. The only thing subjective about that fact is the magnitude of said clownery.
The thing about this hobby that I have learned is that there is always new games that are great each year.

My favourite part of the intros is Jamie pulling Jeff’s chair over when he specifically told her not to 😂

Great concept looking at the ones that have fallen and the reasons behind it. The b roll is appreciated as always!

The Fantasy Realms -> SCOUT -> SS&P pipeline is so real. Cannot wait to see which banger small box card games come next.

heyyy three sisters mentioned :3 we love that game. that and fleet the dice game are our go tos for people who are new to board games.

I objectively believe some folks may not perceive when someone is ‘sarcasing’ us! Keep doing what you’re doing - great work! No sarcasm implied!
Can I quote you? "I love skulking."
Skull king is called up and down the river. You can play in with just a deck of cards. Some people call it Huckelee Buck.

Can we have an update on the Villainous tournament. I really wanna see you guys play King Candy and Shere Khan.
If you're a fan of game design, Black Sonata accomplishing what it does as an analog solo experience justifies keeping it around.
I need to play wonderlands war at more than 2, i feel as though it can only grow for me right now

"To DOPP or not to DOPP" ... that is the question when I do a yearly ranking of my Top games (edit: NOOOOOO!!! she fixed the thumbnail lol)
