  • Registan is the heart of the old city and one of the landmarks of Samarkand in the Timurid state and currently in Uzbekistan. Its ground is paved with stones and the mausoleum of Tamerlane is located near it. The name means a sandy place or desert.
It is a large public square where people gather to hear royal statements and where public executions are carried out. It is surrounded by three Islamic schools characterized by their Islamic architectural style.
    Schools:
There are three Islamic schools in Registan Square: Ulugh Beg School (1418-1422) AD, Sherdar School (1619-1631) AD, and Tilla Qari School (1646-1661) AD. Education in these schools was stopped following the Russian invasion and they were converted into tourist attractions.
    Ulugh Beg Madrasah:
Built by Ulugh Beg during the period (1418-1422) AD and taught in it. The height of the main entrance to the Iwan is approximately 34 m. There are two minarets on both sides of the building, each 34 m high. The school consists of two floors, including 50 rooms for studying and living, and above it are four domes. The most famous person who taught in it is Abd al-Rahman al-Jami.
    Shirdar Madrasah:
Built during the period (1619-1631) AD and the name means the school of the lion's house. There was a corner and a mosque for Sufis in the place, then the ruler of Samarkand established the school in the same place, and it is opposite the Ulugh Beg Madrasah. It was built by Abd al-Jabbar and opened for teaching in 1636 AD. It has an entrance covered with tiles and a picture of a huge lion is drawn on each side of it. There are two cylindrical minarets on both sides of the building. The right minaret was restored during the Soviet era and the left in 1957 AD.
Tilla Qari School: It was built during the period (1646-1661) AD. The name means the golden building and it was named thus because it is decorated with gold.
