Abandoned US Air Force Trailer (Camper Conversion) P1

- This is a United States Air Force Radio / Communications control room trailer.
And over the coming weeks and months I plan to convert it into a mobile living van instead of using tents to camping at shows.
If anybody has any history of this trailer or any similar to this, please get in touch as I would be interested to know its proper history and exactly what its intended purpose was.
The most midlands thing ever is having a nan who had a TV from before gods time that she used to watch Snooker & Wrestling.
I relate so much to that
A Nan that no doubt watched snooker commentated on by Ted Lowe of “and for those of you who are watching in black and white, the pink is next to the green” fame.
@@bpenny4352, came here to say exactly that.
My old gran was the same with the wrestling and pot black back in the day of Ray “Dracula” Reardon and terry Griffiths ..good old days they were …
Used to watch Pot Black on a black and white tv lol.
Me too! It was my Mum though. But of course, if you watched with her, you couldn't tell if she was wrong!
You've got a hell of a chill Mrs to be helping you with shit like that 😂
the best kind
Mind those floor tiles. They look like they're asbestos. I worked for a telecom and all of the remote buildings had asbestos floor tiles as they were so resistant. In fact, we leave them alone unless they start chipping as they are of course fireproof and almost indestructible. But, when they start to go, and the dust gets in the air is when you start to have the issues. Please suit up before you pull those out. Wear the right PPE when removing them.if they are asbestos. Please pull those tiles up.safely. Besides, some new vinyl flooring will be just as durable and really brighten the place up. You're doing the roof anyway.
Love the tribute to the great late Oddball RIP Mr Sutherland.
all we need now is oddjob (fork destructor) to wield a bowler hat
Oddball who is fictional and "Pappy" Boyington who was not, are my WWII heroes.
That's a c.1958 forward communications trailer. We were told the wooden storage unit you destroyed was made of camphor wood, for it's humidity stability, and worth a fortune.
🤣
🤦
Opp's!
and there's a webasto heating system in there somewhere
Did it contain a full model set of Napoleon’s Armée du Nord? A priceless family heirloom.
02:49 love the comment about "something made by Zenith" and the comment about "I thought the did carburetors"... while here in the US I had no idea they did carburetors, only electronics! (radios, TVs, etc)
Crazy!
Two different companies, Zenith (U.S.) made electronics, Zenith (U.K./France) is a carburetor and fuel system manufacturer! I suppose a name like Zenith has a universal appeal similar to ACME, so I'm not surprised it was used more than once by two successful companies.
@@goggledoggo5236 There's a watch company also called Zenith.
@@5thGenNativeTexan funny how in different parts of this world of ours how different things and names mean different things to us, but there’s still a connection, as the saying goes it’s a small world, if only we could live in harmony and peace 🏴👍🏻

Roof is made of pegboard and btw that might have asbestos the floor tiles definitely do be care full in the insulation joints and electrical surrounding army and navy where in love with using the stuff in transport and sleeping quarters
This. The first thing I thought when he said we're stripping the inside was: That thing is riddled with asbestos.
Roof is acoustic tile, not pegboard. Acoustic tile is fairly soft as well as thick, and won't work for pegboard, it would fall apart. Its purpose is to look less than horrible, and absorb as much sound as possible. It is basically made of cardboard chippings loosely pressed together, NOT asbestos.
Agree the floor tiles probably comtain asbestos. Don't snap them and sniff the dust.
meh, they're probably old enough it doesn't matter
@@lwilton Known as Pinex in New Zealand where almost every single house had it for ceilings, and so on .
Never seen the trailer before, but definitely an Old Comms trailer. Those cables are all RF cables and the equipment looks like old HF equipment. Here in the US Zenith made all sorts of Radio and TV equipment
I had a Zenith 35mm camera, that was made in the U.SS.R.
@@philmccormack6925 Zenit not Zenith?
it did say zenith
except there is no place for AC which all Com trailers, pallets had even back in the day as the equipment got very hot I worked on a lot of them back in the day could have been a mobile air traffic control unit though
Between Pisa and Livorno there is an enormous military base called Camp Darby and once it was packed with all kind of military vehicles including some tanks normally M60 including recovery versions. Anyway I've seen various trailers like yours often repainted in the period camouflage. I definitely think that I would not be a great spy 😅😅😅
Jack committing acts of violence on inanimate objects again? Must be Thursday.
If those floor tiles were 9x9 inch they were Asbestos and Zenith were radio and TV manufacturers on the civilian side but they made lots of communication equipment for the DOD.
+1 for the Asbestos tiles
100% asbestos tiles, the house I am in had them. so I was not allowed to rent the house till they were professionally removed.
That was my initial thought as well when seeing the tiles. Maybe ok if you don’t disturb them like using a pitchfork 😆
Those roof panels could be azzy too!
absolute legend that is scotty helping you. such a cool dude
Thank god we got a new video, I was starting to tweak out without my fix of brits n tanks
You'll probably get the money you bought it for back from the copper in those cables alone :D
Ted needs more treats
Zenith were an American electronics company, they were taken over by LG ages ago, they had a good slogan....the quality goes in, before the name goes on. 👍
Get the floor and ceiling tiles (and any insulation that might be lurking) tested for asbestos before you do anything else. It doesn't cost much, and if it comes back clear, you know that you can crack on with abandon.
I’ve seen (a couple of times) a guy who converted a full length aluminium bodied tipper trailer into a camper. Added hydraulic rams to lift the tailgate to become the roof of the “awning”, about 10ft of the trailer was then the “patio area” then a set of doors to the interior. Looked like a great conversion!
One of a three pack of trailers. One generator, one radar (dish with receive/transmiter) one with monitors/ communication. If it was part of Strategic Air Command, there could of been a fourth trailer for command/control.
That’s pretty interesting be great to see some photos
@@MrHewes Search for US K75 or K78 series trailers online- you should be able to find some images.

From across the pond (again) being that that is an older trailer, please measure those floor tiles, if they are 9"x 9" square, they are more than likely to be asbestos tiles. Please take care of how you remove them and the disposal of them, oh, and I guess we shouldn't talk about the leaded paint on the outside...😮
Pissing down in West Wales, Mr Hewes video, perfect!
Pissing it down hear in west Sussex gotta love the liquid sunshine 😂😂

Yes I know this has nothing to do with your tanks and other equipment but, in this video... I noticed that a ***White Volvo V40 left the yard ( time on the video was 9Mins 49 secs...
Did you know that Volvo made an added feature to this car which they never informed customers when they purchased it from new...if the car is from 2012 - 2016 and either a Lux or Redesign or even the Country model... !
Go into the n/s/r passenger door and lock at the back of the front passenger seat at the bottom .... If you see a lever at either side of the seat, then lift these 2 levers at the same time and the seat will fold down and allow you to tuck it under the dashboard.
I know this because I have a 2014 D3 Lux RDesign and I've seen other models with this feature.
That would look mint behind a Matador, and said Matador would offer all the space for beer and BBQ supplies… or maybe in artic form behind a Mack or GMC re-supply tractor
You made me smile with the comment about your gran watching snooker in black and white mine did the same she always claimed to understand what was going on but could never explain it. Her TV was connected via a 2 pin 5 amp plug was very common years ago. Now a little advice please be carefull with those old electrics in the van the lights are likely designed for 110 volt US mains and will be edison screw bulbs. Not really easy to come by the right bulbs I strongly recommend changing to UK standard sockets. Finally US wiring color code is white is neutral black live
I bet thats not the first time Jacks kicked someones back doors in 🤔.
I bet Jack's mum has heard hers kicked in more!
make sure those celling tiles are not asbestos tiles, they used a lot of those in music studios in the late forty's and fifty's (i play the trumpet for a living). they look innocuous, but there's been a few studio musicians that's acquired asbestosis, and as this was a coms van i guessing it needed to be sound proofed. and no i'm not doing a 'you don't want to do that way'
+1 The similar looking ceiling tiles in an old telephone switchboard area where I used to work were tested and came back as asbestos.
Please make sure that you would be able to get out of the bedroom in the event of a fire. Love this channel!
Don't forget underfloor heating and a central vacuum cleaner system
Electric underfloor heating isn't a bad idea really!

Was that Budge's collection? Lots of Bandwagons IIRC next to the station. They used to sell them as well.
"Doin the washing" has a whole new meaning when you're a tank girl....👍😎
This is a brilliant project. Judging from the German instructions for the night heater, this may have seen service in Germany during the cold war... Now intrigued. By the way snooker commentators described the colours by saying 'for our viewers watching in black and white, the pink ball is third from the left or your screen' and so on...
Similarly for footie on the radio; the phrase originates from the days when football was listened to a lot on the radio. To help the listener picture the scene, the pitch was divided up into a grid of imaginary squares, square one being around the goalmouth. Thus, whenever the ball went out of play for a goal kick, or someone made a boring pass-back (of the type no longer allowed), the commentator would groan: "Back to square one".
@@Willheheckaslike-d4h That's an epic bit of knowledge and the origin of back to square one then. Learned about snooker when studying media history at college in the 90s, but this is a new one on me.
The heater is made in Germany. The trailer was used by US troops who, even if stationed in Germany, speak English.
I drive my car to France but I don't Dynotape all the switches and label them in French.

Nearly 2 weeks and he’s back. Awesome video!
Next time you have something to demolish, find a Scotts man and tell them there’s a fiver hidden somewhere on board 🏴👍🏻
That is too cool. Thanks for sharing this video. Y’all have a wonderful evening. And love your videos.
BTW it was some sort of Comms Van though, as has been said elsewhere there is a lot of, what was then, high value RF cable mostly in the roof space, that should be saved for reclamation or sold to radio amateurs, who would love that old stuff, as it is better than what we have today! The trailer looks very good condition for it's year (when ever). It should make a nice conversion as long as Joe isn't doing it! Can you imagine what chaos he would cause? No don't, doesn't bare thinking about. Good to know someone else is taking charge of the repairs. Good luck to whom ever is doing it. Thanks for showing us the bare beauty of it though. See you next time.
god dam, scotty has been in my feed all week and now he is in one of your vids
Did something similar with another Air Force Comm trailer that had a goose neck and about 7 feet longer. Our maintenance unit converted it for an Army Corp commander.
RHIP!
@@Calamity_Jack so true, so true. ^~^
Forking hell Jack was in beast mode 😂😂😂 . Going to be a nice project your doing 👍👍👍👍
Expected technical breakdown of the unit and some cleaning and carpentry. Got three blokes going medieval on a wardrobe
Its not often I can identify these old vehicles, but i'm reasonably sure this old Comms trailer was originally configured as a recovery trailer for Jack' mum, with a lower bin to home hobo Adam.
Jack needs a pint after that! Thanks for the video
This is a genius idea, everyone loves tanks, everyone loves a good old camper build 👌
That will make a really nice trailer conversion
Those old round plugs and sockets in the UK were mostly Wylex . Ill get my coat now !
That's a name from my childhood.
Scotty Fairno being in the video is unexpected but a very welcomed surprise!! Great stuff chaps keep up the good work!
You should set another one up as a mobile workshop. Drape a tarp between them and you'd have a large dry area to hang out in out of the rain.
Thank god Jack is back with the family friendly tshirts.
Absolutely, and Bible chucking as well... what went on in Jack's childhood?
Pay attention to this one, Mr Hewes, it's gonna get big hits!!!! I can't wait!!! 👍👍👍👍👍👍
It's looking great. maybe pull it with a Reo or a duce.. ^^ I see bunk styled beds at the end. Ted seem to feel at home which is a plus. Good project, will be looking forward to the finished camper.. Add camoflage nets. Tc
Looks like Ted likes his new office! Excited to see the progress on this!
He knows yer man Scott 🤙🏻
Single cab GMC cabover/w 318 Detroit and 13 speed transmission in OD green to pull it with would be nails!!! Howdy Ted, good on ya😂😂😂
Love the new trailer , I want one , bit worried about the cider so early in the day , unless your sponsered by them , then crack on !
Grey/black water reclamation tank underneath plus potable, having seen a Dennings bus converted to a mobile home, do it right, do it once. This will be a cracking build. 😊
You should donate the communications stuff. That's in it to the museum that's not obsolete
A GMC Jimmy or Bedford OX tractor unit would be ace!👍
That on the back of the Reo would look just byooodiful! :)
Was wondering the other day while watching scottyfairno how it would be interesting if the two of you got together and here we are , look forward to seeing more of you two together .
I think you'll find when kicking something, you should say Hi-Yah!, works every time...great find btw.😊
Gonna be a very cool build, pls keep us updated
Great to see you at the victory show.
Keep it plane & simple outside,
Inside it could be a first class motorhome,
I can't wait to see the outcome at the end.
New Mr. Hewes video, definitely gonna save this for lunch...
Hit like your new passion Waggon can't wait to see the finished job
This is the funniest video you’ve posted for a good while! :)
absolutely LOVE the t-shirt with Oddball....!
Outstanding care and professionalism with a garden fork !
An unusual 3-pronged one.
Going to be a cool show trailer 😊
Most probably the bit missing (from above the transformer cabinet) was a VHF radio transmitter, as some of those coax cables are fairly high power(as also suggested by the transformer, invite a local radio ham round to check it out, if Jack hasn't altered it yet.
Didn't expect scotty to show up
😂
Dude this is so cool!!! Love a camper conversion that thing is so roomy
Get a 5th wheel atachment for the foden underlift and pull it with that.crouch will have one kicking about
Probably better to use the dolly and just hook it to the pintle hitch, more maneuverable that way. Plus not having to deal with the landing gear...
If you want to go all out with the camping build, I'd say keep the entry door as-is and turn the other opening on the back into an upward folding deck/patio. I'm looking to do something similar with the escape door on the rear left of our 1953 GMC PD-4104 "Greyhound" bus.
You could design it so that when it's folded up/stowed it still looks original-ish.
Outstanding care and professionalism !
Zenith built electronics, communications and televisions. They built a complete state of the art manufacturing plant in Lansdale, Pennsylvania (my home town), before they abruptly changed their mind, never opened it, then abandoned the plant and started building a new plant in Mexico.
Hi, Joe I’m so impressed by the shirt that you have on in this video. It is displaying a picture of the greatest Sherman commander there ever was. MORIARTY, there you go again with them negative waves !!!!!!!!!!!!
Zenith is an old American television company.I’d head cautiously with the old floor tiles, they may contain asbestos.
No may about it, it's a 100% given that vintage tile will be asbestos, because it worked.
Thanks :) Ask the local radio amateurs to look over the radio gear they may buy it from you
Make sure you put a viewing area on top of the trailer. Something like a collapsible railing / poles for sunshade.
To video those tank parades.
Hands trailers were made in Letchworth Garden City in Hertfordshire up until 1970.

You could always use it for your holidays touring down to the south of France but make sure you make a jumbo bed for Ted.

Its always the little ones that have the most pent-up aggression.
I would love to have one of these.
You must save the ceiling lamps and reuse them, along with some of the other fittings for the novelty factor.
Love the shirts!!
Jack, you're an awesome weapon of mass destruction hahaha
The thing looks very "Gypsy" at the moment, but what a wicked project, and all the potential
Bring on it's transformation into a thing of beauty and practicality
What happened to the Aqua Blaster??? ..... haven't seen that being used for a while, that woulda been a ideal job for it

Probably a portable radio for the enjoyment of the Archers.
Reversing Ackerman steering stuff is a dark art - I see you know the art , “thatchers”
