- I recently was tasked with repairing this Klon KTR for a good friend. It appears to have been a victim of the wrong input voltage.

Definitely need to use some flux on your solder braid to suck up that solder. It works as long as the iron is hot enough. Much easier to use hot air to remove and replace components, but it is something you need to practice at and getting the temperature and air flow just right can be difficult. But _flux is your friend_ with or without hot air.
Great job Ryan!
You can also use 99% Isopropyl to clean the board after the flux wash.
Thanks!!
Hi Ryan, you should use liquid flux to desolder those surface mount parts, would be easier.
Thank you!!! I will order a bottle right now...
Thanks for the video.. I fried my od820 about a year ago and it did the samething (no sound but did turn on) I had a new max1044 but wasn't sure if that was the problem. After watching this I swapped it out and it worked. Thanks again 🙂
Great repair Ryan, watching your vid reminds me how I hate SMD repair. Lol
Haha!!! Happy to remind ya
I was hoping to see you using the right tools for SMT, because I don't have any experience with it myself. But you managed to get it to work with the old through-hole style soldering iron and desoldering braid. Nice!
Thank you!!! I do have a Weller hot air tool as well as a vacuum desoldering tool but I chose to not use them to show it can be done other ways that might be more available. Thank you for recognizing that :-)
NGL, watching you move the IC into place with your soldering iron nearly gave me a heart attack. This was a cool watch though! Glad you were able to fix it.
TBH, I have not watched this video back because I get a heart attack every single time

Ryan, I have a Klon Centaur Professional Overdrive one day i plugged it in and it wont do nothing but the light comes on !!! Can this be repaired being its potted?
It may be tricky depending on what is not right. If you want me to give it a try, shoot me a message on my website ❤️
Nice repair!
Dope
thank you!
I have an AnalogMan King Of Tone pedal which I managed to damage by unplugging my guitar while running a couple of gain pedals into the KoT while it was also turned on. The transient pop was such a high level that it damaged one of the op amps, killing one side of the pedal. Fortunately I had a replacement NJM 4580 and I just swapped out the damaged op amp. Socketed op amps for the win! I also have tried a number of op amps in both sides of the pedal, and decided to use a Burr-Brown OP2134 in the yellow channel in boost mode because of its smoother, less spitty distortion tone.
Nice work as usual. Question, what are those diodes where it says”THESE ARE ESSENTIAL”, and if unobtainable what would be the nearest replacement. Thanks in advance, really like your site.
Thank you for your kind words! Those are said to be 1N34A germanium diodes. They measured .30fV on my Proster DMM. A good alternative is stompboxparts.com/semiconductors/1n34a-germanium-diode/
and

Many people don't run the gain high enough on their Klon to start clipping, so the diodes don't really matter that much for them. Similarly , many people set their King of Tone to be "clean boost" (no clipping diodes in the feedback loop) on both sides, so only op amp clipping is possible. If you also power it with 18V, then you can get some hefty volume boost without clipping. You still get the equalization curve that boosts mid frequencies, with tons of headroom.
This videos of mistake / fault searching are so great it really helps a self taught rooky like me to deal with similar situations.
I got some diy circuits that I just can't figure out what went wrong why it doesn't work but now I have a new insight so thank you!
That is some tedious work. I sure hope your friend didn't pay too much for that pedal... the prices are truly ridiculous now.
It is crazy how expensive they are! It was a little tough but I'm glad I found it.
@@TheToneGeek Yeah, you got it done and it sounds good again. Nice work.
