I have mine in a little plastic "critter keeper" with sawdust and coffee grounds and egg laying cardboard strips hung above and i give them water, but they won't mate. I have taken them outside and also give them bright LED lights indoors. I think they need more room to fly around, so I bought some wood and screen material and going to build a 20-24 inch tall enclosure. I also read that many people do not experience breeding unless they have a minimum of 100 BSF flies minimum, some say 1,000 minimum. I wonder if they are picky for mates and want a selection, like mealworm beetles not wanting to inbreed and can identify each other by their unique smell. I suspect BSF flies have higher standards and are more civilized than house flies. The wood I bought is called a 1x2x8' which means 1 inch by 2 inch by 8 foot (96 inch) and they always are smaller than 1 inch by 2 inches, more like 0.75 inch by 1.5 inch, but it is called a "furring strip" that is used as a cheap little strip of wood for adding some strength to structures. They cost around $1.60 + tax USD here, each. If they sold a 1 inch by 1 inch by 8 foot long, i think that would work also, for a small enclosure, but they don't exist and if you try to get rods or anything like that, the cost skyrockets way up, so these furring strips seem to be the cheapest wood to use indoors. (it is not treated for rain/weather).
The attractor for BSF (Black Soldier Fly) refers to a substance or stimulus that entices or draws the flies towards a specific location or trap. It is typically a combination of organic materials, such as decomposing food waste or manure, that emits odors that attract the BSF for egg-laying and feeding purposes.
