Yeah, I was a teenager around that time and it's incredible how that song still relevant and holds up after all these years. It's one of the most streamed songs of Paramore in most digital platforms.
Pretty Fly holds up specifically BECAUSE it's a Weird Al song that's Weird Al didn't write. The Offspring knew exactly what they were doing, and made a song that said everything that needed to be said before some dorky half-assed attempt from a nothing band got a 1-hit-wonder. like watch Watsky's Limo 4 Emo video as proof. even if you don't like Pretty Fly, or The Offspring, at the least game recognize game.
My first rock album I listened to and fell in love was Americana by The Offspring. Before that only radio music. After Americana, it was Blink 182, New Found Glory, Jimmy Eat World, then more punkrocky bands, then some bands with some heavier sound like A Day To Remember, then some metal, screamo, melodic hardcore, Dance Gavin Dance etc. Still it all started with Americana some 20 years ago.
@@GastroCentrsVeseliba Dance Gavin Dance! For me, it’s be video game/movie OST, then I’d latch on to your Three Days Graces, Linkin Parks, BMTH, I the Mighty, and Dance Gavin. From ‘butt’ to post hardcore.
That snare sound was a 13-14"x 6" OCDP 24 ply snare with big like 3" diameter vents in it. Combine that with super tight bass drum with a sweep EQ and those late 90's Nu-Metal drums were the best.
Angels and Airwaves “The Adventure” always holds up. When I was in my darkest time and suicidal that song helped me so much. It really is a hopeful song and helps me now when I have a bad day. It’s beautiful.
It truly is a beautiful song. That intro riff is just gorgeous! And the drums in the verses will always be some of my favourite drum beats, period. Incredibly well produced too!

As someone who loved the offspring as a kid, I just CANT hate this song, I had the greatest hits dvd as a kid and played the videos, especially this one all the time
Yup. For an album made in 2007/2005 (somewhere around there) it is a solid album that DEFINITELY holds up. The video, the album, the songs, it really does
Ya, and 311 moved to Los Angeles. They actually recorded I believe it was the Soundsystem album, at a studio that shared a chain link fence with my middle school in Burbank. There was a basketball hoop in the area that shared the fence and a lot of kids were stoked they would be playing basketball there on breaks and kids threw their backpacks over and got signatures. School staff made the field there off limits for a time, kinda weak. They were cool guys. They even put in their thanks section the kids at David Starr Middle School. But I never liked their music. during PE one time I saw them playing some ball and yelled "311 SUCKS" and the 2nd singer in the band, idk what else to call him, flipped me off. It was a good day for me.
I loved the offspring when I was a young teenager but mostly the albums before Americana. They started sounding different and more commercial with that album and although it has nostalgia value for me, I agree it's not the best. But early Offspring? That was pretty bomb
Offspring have faced that criticism with their every album. People didn't like Smash for being "too commercial" too. It wasn't really until RAFRAG where they really changed their sound and never came back.
@@CrisHaasbro Same! Conspiracy Of One is my favorite sound that they ever had. Songs like Dammit I Changed Again, Living In Chaos, Million Miles Away and the title track are heavy and dark compared to much of their other work. @@Zimx02 Really? Smash isn't commercial sounding at all! (Except for Come Out And Play and What Happened To You.) The rest of the songs were heavy af! With breakdowns and everything. Ixnay was way more commercial sounding, with twangy guitars and Dexter singing super high notes in Gone Away and I Choose.
This video genuinely surprised me. I never thought I would hear Finn say that he likes Limp Bizkit - "Break Stuff" and that it still holds up today, that he thinks Fred Durst is talented, that he loves the cranked up snare drum sound, that he loves 311, thinks they're talented, and has been listening to them since "Down", and that he likes old Red Hot Chili Peppers music more than their new stuff. That means Finn and I finally agree on some things and have tastes in common for once. I never thought I'd see the day. I like this new Twitch format he's doing. Some thoughts on the video: 1) The 311 - "Come Original" music video came out in August 1999. I know JNCO was founded in 1993 only 6 years earlier, but the styles and fashions were slightly different and changed over time. People generally refer to the 90s as a monolithic thing, but the early, mid, and late 90s all had their own distinct style. Also, you mention Nick's pseudo-ragga vocals. Come on dude, what do you expect? He's a white American, not a black Jamaican, so of course he's not going to sound completely "authentic", but Nick is a cool guy who was heavily influenced by dancehall reggae in the 90s and I give him credit for trying his best. I think it sounds catchy, especially for the time, and makes the song what it is with the mix of styles. I hate it when critics go "hurr durr white boy reggae = cringe, bro", every time. It's always the same, tired old jab at 311 and any band that is white and plays reggae or reggae influenced music. Does "Come Original" hold up 22 years later? Probably not, as it was a product of it's time, but IDGAF. 311 is my favorite band of all time and "Come Original" is my favorite 311 song of all time, hands down. I heard it right when it came out and I will always love it because it perfectly represents and mixes the different genres/influences into a single song. Oh, and 311 moved from Omaha, Nebraska to Los Angeles, not San Jose. 2) The Offspring - "Pretty Fly For A White Guy", as well as "Original Prankster", are intentionally funny/joke/parody songs. "Pretty Fly For A White Guy" makes fun of white guys who try too hard to act "gangsta". So while The Offspring has funny songs, they have plenty of serious songs, including "The Kids Aren't Alright", from the same album as "Pretty Fly". 3) I always thought the girl in the "Misery Business" video looked like she was in her 40s, especially with the caked on make up. 32 is being generous in my opinion. About that lyric: it obviously didn't age well, because it is no longer socially acceptable to slut-shame women, at least publicly and especially if you're famous. Is it a teenage revenge fantasy? Yes, but again, it's a product of its time and she was 17 when she wrote it. It's one thing if Hayley is just tired of playing it, but that's one of their most popular songs, if not their signature song. I find it disappointing that they are not playing it anymore. They could just change that one problematic lyric to something like "once a *bore* you're nothing more, I'm sorry that'll never change" when they play it live, for example, and there would be no issue, at least offense-wise.
Americana is just as good if not better. Pretty Fly isn't a worse song than Come Out and Play, and Americana has a lot more to say on the whole than Smash.
@@Zimx02 Come Out and Play may be the worst song on Smash, but Pretty Fly is likely the worst song in all of rock history. This is a hill I'll die on. Smash isn't just The Offspring's best record, it's an all-time all-artists great record. You can disagree, and that's okay.
It's fair to dislike Kiedis as a person (yeah its personally been hard to like the man after learning about that whole kidnapping thing aswell). But as a musician I don't get. He writes all the lyrics to their songs and sings/raps them as well as you'd expect any one can. Without Keidis, just like Flea, there is no rhcp. Edit: It's been a while since I've read up on the story, but Keidis didn't just self-admitedly commit kidnapping but also statutory ---- aswell. Real sick stuff.

I mean, that one The Offsprings song is exactly as you described it, some others too, but they have some insanely influential songs that definitely held up. The Kids Are Not Alright. Also "HEY, DUDES, DO YOU WANNA?" that song did NOT hold up, it is the essence of cheesy Easycore, even if I love it, lol.
Ah man, Break Stuff even lyrically holds up. Lmao just showed this to my pop music loving coworker and he FREAKED OUT. He was like “I feel this in my bones”
I'm so happy you love 311. Those guys have successfully carved out a space for themselves. I think they have only taken two summers off touring since 93
I can’t even count how many shows I’ve been too, including two 311 days and their live show is fantastic. Their growth as a band has taken some weird turns, but what good band doesn’t? But that’s what I think about Thrice too, and I already know what Finn thinks about them. 🤣

I haven't always thought this, but after listening to all their albums including the ones from the last 10 years, they are one of the most fascinating bands on earth because of how well their quality in newer music is. Honestly Break Stuff is an amazing song. Limp Bizkit may be corny, but they have a pretty good selection of songs throughout their career. Also based on the brief interaction I've had with Fred Durst, he's actually a super nice dude.
It actually makes sense since nu metal as a hip-hop influenced genre puts more emphasis on the groove and rhythm rather than guitar skills (which is more typical of oldschool metal). Rhythm section is what provides that in the first place (hence it is called 'rhythm section'), and it includes bass and drums.
Just hearing Finn talk about Stick Stickly...aside of the fact that it isn't a joke anymore...but rather it being a serious contbution to the artform and a real genre gamechanger... ...that blows my fifteen year old mind

Still love Stick Stickly. I think I watch this video like once a week, thanks to the RUclips algorithm and I am never disappointed. I still go WTF at all the transitions to the different styles, but can't stop watching
That tight snare sound is what rock fans have been waiting to hear for years and years and years. I grew up in the late 70's and the 80's. All we heard for years was that awful and weak gated reverb sound on the snare. Then in the mid-late 90's we finally got to hear what a real snare sounded like. It surprised me to hear what a real snare sounded like without gated reverb. I loved it.
I still think Ignition, Smash and most of Ixnay hold up to this day, Americana still had a few great songs but I swear to god they made a very conscious effort to put out the dumbest, cheesiest, most insufferable singles from then on
They've done that for all their albums lmao. Did you forget about Come Out and Play? Did you forget about I Choose? What's worse is that Pretty Fly is heavy as shit and just shits on white wannabes, and y'all acting like you're supposed to be embarrassed. The song rips and white guys downplaying the song get the rope.
Misery Business is still an iconic song. Hayley is crazy dropping that song. You don't have to agree with the protagonist. It's not like the Beatles actually lived in a yellow submarine.
Exactly. I don't know when people got so ignorant that they think a musician has to agree with the subjects in their songs, that's literally one of the points of creating art in the first place.
Finn, you brought up a good point in the Limp Bizkit segment. Fred did a great job directing that video, especially with the celebrity cameos and the celebrities chosen have held up 20 years later. However, Limp Bizkit did not hold up 20 years later. Maybe you can do a video about the rise and fall of Limp Bizkit. Why were they so hot one minute and then fade away into obscurity over night? (BRW, I love the song “Break Stuff” but I hated the band.)
Yo, Finn, you completely called it with Break Stuff getting a mosh pit as big as the bands playing while being played between live bands at a show. I saw Beartooth and wage war, and break stuff played on the speakers, and the crowd was singing it louder than the speakers and there were two circle pits going. I actually filmed it it was so hilarious. Break stuff really is timeless.
It's funny how at age 38 I don't know most of these songs. Basically anything "mainstream" after 2004 or so is a complete blind spot for me. Anything newer (mainstream) that I've heard is because of my wife, and she's mostly into diva type pop and hip hop music, but even then most of her favorites have been around for over 10 or 15 years.

Yeah, I was a teenager around that time and it's incredible how that song still relevant and holds up after all these years. It's one of the most streamed songs of Paramore in most digital platforms.
I use Misery Business and a stout cup of coffee to slap me out of my morning funk.
Limp Bizkit songs will always slam. Break Stuff especially.
Literally everyone: “Hey dudes are you ready to…?”
All other lyrics:
Lmaooo to everyone who walked away and went " Hey, dudes are you ready to.? ? " to their dogs or something. I did LMAO
I was super disappointed that he worked on his accent during their hiatus. The cringe french accent was their main selling point lol
I looked up all the lyrics just because that was the only line I knew and it annoyed me. Guess I’m the only one.
The Pretty Fly riff and guitar tone slays, the lyrics are on point and no one can deny it.
Come on, dude! The offspring is awesome! They put so many kids into rock. I still love their sound to this very day. No shame 😂
Yeah I think Finns in the minority here haha. The offspring is fun
True! Early Offspring and 311 is what bridged the gap from punk-rock-metal for me. The Offspring in their early days were awesome!
Anyway who doesn't think "come out and play" is worthy needs serious help
@@GastroCentrsVeseliba Dance Gavin Dance!
For me, it’s be video game/movie OST, then I’d latch on to your Three Days Graces, Linkin Parks, BMTH, I the Mighty, and Dance Gavin.
From ‘butt’ to post hardcore.
That snare sound was a 13-14"x 6" OCDP 24 ply snare with big like 3" diameter vents in it. Combine that with super tight bass drum with a sweep EQ and those late 90's Nu-Metal drums were the best.
@limelight81 definitely a big part of the appeal.
All the Nu Metal drummers got that from John Stainer. Helmet's snare sound is above all others.
Angels and Airwaves “The Adventure” always holds up. When I was in my darkest time and suicidal that song helped me so much. It really is a hopeful song and helps me now when I have a bad day. It’s beautiful.
Their first two albums always brings me to tears from the exact experience you’ve mentioned above. Those albums always help clear my head.
@@Automotive_Intervention all their albums
same. Angels and Airwaves are amazing and The Adventure was on repeat for a while during the time i felt suicidal.
It truly is a beautiful song. That intro riff is just gorgeous! And the drums in the verses will always be some of my favourite drum beats, period. Incredibly well produced too!
That album is apart of my DNA.
Lol offspring doesn't even sound like pretty fly most of the time. It was a meme song before memes were popular
Absolutely, judging offspring by anything other than Smash and Ixnay is a sin. Hell, even Americana has Staring at the sun and The kids.
A handful of their songs aren't supposed to be taken seriously but I agree that Pretty Fly is kind of a failed attempt. I even think Why don't you get a job a funnier song

No brakes is amazing!!!
@@SergheiPopescu nope nope wrong. Smash had come out and play, and Ixnay had I Choose (and fukken Don't Pick it Up :[ ). Americana is just as good of an album if not better, and pretty fly has better guitar work and more biting lyrics than their other meme songs.
Don't bend to the opinion of salty 'white guys' like Flinn. Be proud of Americana.
The Offspring is what christian parents, who've never heard metal, think metal sounds like lol
damn that's tight, lol it fits way too well lol
Did not know Fred directed all of their videos, props to him for that he did a fantastic job.
He's also got a movie or two out that he directed.
@LESTERAMA Wow that's crazy
He also directed a movie. That was super terrible. Had John travels in it
The offspring has a ton of good songs. But that song is a parody.
This is a great series, keep doing these!!
Thank you!
As someone who loved the offspring as a kid, I just CANT hate this song, I had the greatest hits dvd as a kid and played the videos, especially this one all the time
It almost feels like Finn is taking the song too seriously. It's purposely silly to make fun of those kids who dressed like that.
Limp Bizkit's musicians most definitely hold up. Wes Borland and John Otto are so talented and clean
Fucking love Wes and his body makeup / costumes but the guy can't sing for shit. Saw him singing my way recently and came to appreciate Fred's voice 🤣
Don't forget Sam Rivers and DJ Lethal.

Misery Business is a banger and a scene classic. It absolutely holds. Hayley Williams is beyond amazing!
Yup. For an album made in 2007/2005 (somewhere around there) it is a solid album that DEFINITELY holds up. The video, the album, the songs, it really does
hates offspring, loves 311.... lol, Finn is the weirdest sometimes.
I know, right? That was a curve ball for me. I thought it would be the opposite.
#cgicartoonparrots make this a thing!
He's defending the wannabes throughout the video. It's easy. He could have been featured as the white guy in pretty fly.
311>The Offspring
Come Original is a classic and the Offspring are also a classic band. Saw both 311 and Offspring live five years ago and they were amazing.
I love Conspiracy of One though
@@CrisHaasbro Same! Conspiracy Of One is my favorite sound that they ever had. Songs like Dammit I Changed Again, Living In Chaos, Million Miles Away and the title track are heavy and dark compared to much of their other work. I also really love Come Out Swinging, it's one of my ALL TIME favorite Offspring songs.
Beat offspring albums?
This video genuinely surprised me. I never thought I would hear Finn say that he likes Limp Bizkit - "Break Stuff" and that it still holds up today, that he thinks Fred Durst is talented, that he loves the cranked up snare drum sound, that he loves 311, thinks they're talented, and has been listening to them since "Down", and that he likes old Red Hot Chili Peppers music more than their new stuff. That means Finn and I finally agree on some things and have tastes in common for once. I never thought I'd see the day. I like this new Twitch format he's doing.
Some thoughts on the video:
1) The 311 - "Come Original" music video came out in August 1999.
It's heartbreaking to see how bad Offspring got because Smash is legitimately one of the best albums of all time.
Love smash.
Better to burn out than fade away case

Man I never actually knew kiedis done a kidnapping
nevermind I do remember reading it I don't actually Think he kidnapped her I think it was more or less her following them around wanting sex with kiedis they ended up taking her back to her parents that is if I remember correctly

Yea boi! 311
I don't know how this happened, but the best drummers and bassists came from nu-metal.
Makes sense to me, the whole genre is about the rhythm section and groove.
No way, jazz bassists, Jaco Pastorious, much better players. Check out Stu Hamm
Or just metal in general.
One commendable thing that nu metal did was pumping up the bass volume in the mix
Angels & Airwaves is proto Imagine Dragons. It is peak car commercial energy.

I loved it.
