    After installing this lock today this is what I learned. Install took 10 mins. Programming took an hour after searching through multiple RUclips videos and Google searches. To program one code to the lock press the program button, then the #1 button, then the kwikset button, then input your code, then press the kwikset button again. Other # buttons do different functions such as the #8 allows you to program how long the duration of the auto lock (5-99 seconds) after you input your code. I hope this helps future installations.

      Imple, easy instructions, is the 955 the same as the 917?

    How to fix your lock; After getting what I thought was a new lock set off Amazon which apparently was used & already had a code set on it, I called when I failed to get it to work. To delete & reset you need to make sure the toggle is Vertical NOT Horizontal which Kwikset does Not make clear & it is a very important step. The same goes for when you enter in a new code or it will not let you progress past 1st number entered. Videos & instructions should state that but leave that out. I am sure it is confusing a lot of people.

      Hi Desiree - Yes, to perform a factory reset that will delete all codes associated with the lock, place the interior turn-piece in the vertical position. Here are the Factory Reset instructions:
      1. Make sure the door is open and unlocked.
      2. Press and hold the Program button until you hear one long beep (approximately 30 seconds), then release the Program button.
      3. Press and release the Program button again. You will hear one short beep.
      4. Test with an existing User Code, the lock should not work.

    Programming the Smart Code
    (Be sure the toggle lock is vertical)
    1 Remove the interior cover.
    2 Push the programming button.
    • You will hear two beeps
    3 Press 3 on the keypad
    • You will hear one short beep and the keypad will flash green
    4 Press Kwikset
    5 Enter a programming code.
    • It must be between 4 and 8 digits
    6 Press Kwikset
    7 Re-enter the programming code.
    8 Press Kwikset and the code is set:
    • if you hear a long beep and the keypad flashes green

    Mine doesn’t have the hole it just has a button on the inside for programming but always beeps 3 times instead of 2.

    How do I lock the door from the outside with the key pad without having the automatic lock on?

To set the SmartCode 917 or 955 to locked mode, rotate the interior turn-piece to the vertical position and when the turn-piece is horizontal, it will remain unlocked/passage mode.     When I hit the button on the top a flash is red. Don't go green 2 eliminate full numbers.

    Why would you say the keypad doesn’t unlock the lock? I bought this at Home Depot and it says its a motorized lock that can be unlocked with the keypad!!!!

      Hi and here to help! Yes, you can use the User Code to unlock the SmartCode, yet the Programming Code will not unlock it. The Programming Code can only be used to program the lock from the exterior side, but will not unlock the latch.     My maintenance man installed the lock and it is locked ! I am unable to open the door with the key or the factory codes. HELP !!

    I am fearful of setting a single programming code after hearing that programming a single programming code disables the internal programming button. If the programming code is forgotten, how do you reset all programming and start over? The downside of using the programming button is that any who knows how to program this Kwikset 917 can reset their own programming code thereby locking me out of all programming. Am I understanding correctly or have I misheard the message of the video. (I know, when in doubt check the manual, but when dyslexic, videos rule!)

    Worst door lock I have ever purchased!!!! Can't program it. Should have stuck with Schlage!

    No key came with this lock. Followed the factory reset.....no luck. Pain in the - - -

    I wasted hours!!!! trying to insert a programming code. It didn't work. So I use the programming button. That works.

    yalls door locks are literally trash they dont work, i set a user code it flashes green when i put it in but wont unlock tha door and the key works but keypad doesn’t🤔
