Fair enough. If a game doesn't hook you in a generous 10 hours, you have no obligation to keep playing it and giving it more chances. Gone are the days where we have limited options for entertainment and a lot of time. Our time is worth more than slogging through something we don't enjoy, succumbing to the sunk-cost fallacy.
I think that’s fair. You shouldn’t have to play a game for 20 or 30 hours for it to “get better”, or to get to a point where it’s fun. All the nonsense aside, Veilguard looked extremely mediocre to me from the beginning. I had almost no expectations, and it sounds like it won’t even meet those. I’ve loved the dragon age games(even Inquisition), but this is a hard pass for many more reasons than woke content. It just doesn’t look good.
Yeah same man i like dragon age 2,not gonna put it at the same tier as dao,but to me its a good game on its own, specially since it had 16 months or so development time, and origins was i think 5 or 6 years,so i cant really hate devs for reusing a lot of same environment, which was one of the complaints for the game, they needed more time.
"Wasn't polished" is an understatement. EA gave them a year to do da2 it and they've pulled a miracle creating something as engaging as that (everyone's praising Larian studios but their re-cycling of da2 companions for both dos2 and bg3 is so plain transparent. That's how good da2's writing is.) Voice direction was outstanding, they've never pulled out a Varric like that ever since. Still - compared to origins, da2 is a scam, that's how I felt. I returned to it a decade after it's release and it grew on me. DAI feels like (and probably is) a repurposed mmo, yet Tresspaser alone somehow made the whole experience worth it. What we see now is a mobile clicker game with sprites for followers and paid costumes repurposed for pc. It cannot be fixed in any way, only redone from the ground up. And nothing about it can be justified for due to it's nature it was created as a scam pretending to be not just any RPG game, but a Dragon Age game.
Steam has revamped it reviews policy and it was recently too. I think this has an impact on that. No one buying a badly review game so Steam need to help that. Every bought game are plus for Steam so there's that.
If someone put a review then refund the game on Steam, that Steam review doesn't count at overall rating. They made this change a while ago to combat with review bombing. It seems working :D
You mean you dont want your video games to teach you how to talk to your friends like a therapist, express only positive emotions at all times, or learn how to apologize for misgendering someone in a dark fantasy RPG about stopping a world ending threat? Shocking, I say.
kingdoms of amalur makes this game look bad and that was considered on of eas worst rpg games and had tons of bioware/ea crossover special gear and crap as dlc to promote it

And even that prologue is already more interesting than this game probably ever will be. If all the other reviews are to be believed. You can't say anything bad either. A big problem here is the long development time. Popular genres change. This game started 9+ years ago as a multiplayer action RPG, hence the emphasis on linear maps, fast and flashy combat, and weak storyline. When they realised (4 years ago) that players were turning against games in this genre, Bioware or EA switched towards single player with unkillable companions and presumably added more RPG elements and maybe padded out the story and voice acting. Maybe this is when they added the puzzles, to give the single player something extra to do, but they were now limited by their earlier choices of map design. This is not a game that spent its entire development cycle as a single player, story-based, role playing game. It was forced to do a drastic change after most of the design and game engine choices were already made and we can see the results clearly.
In case you're wondering, the facts I've heard of are the 9 and 4 years and the switch from multiplayer to single player. The rest is conjecture on my part but it feels reasonable. The decision to change 4 years ago is widely believed to be due to the failure of the Marvel Avengers game which was released in 2020 and rapidly collapsed.
@@r.d.6290 I mean, DA has a big existing fanbase, and since you can get a refund on Steam if you play less than 2 hours people don't have much to lose in trying it out for themselves

I never thought I'd say this, but veilguard makes Andromeda look like game of the year. The combat was better by far, more engaging and had more variety. The combination system was better done. The allies actually killed things and could draw aggro and die. The companions looked better, Cora was still a bombshell. Story was better paced and flowed more consistently. Veilguard is going to be the Disney star wars to the OT.
I don't get why they didn't carry over The Inquisitor as the main character. That's disappointing. Especially Solas not being the primary antagonist. The combat is really.... claustrophobic too. WAY too many effects on screen.
Every dragon age is a new main character. This Rook is the most pointless of all of them though as they have nothing important about them to justify being the leader.
I'm honestly baffled how a reviewer like mortismal with an established experience with rpg systems can give this such positive feedback. The only way i can fathom the thought is imagining EA contacting the guy and offering him a buttload of money and telling him to shut up!

As it seemed from the previews, the people who loved Origins (ie. the people who like cRPGs, tactical combat, character building, dark, mature themes, player choices that matter...) will probably hate this one. They dumbed down the already dumbed down stuff from DA2 and Inquisition. They even dumbed down the role-playing elements, the dialogues are atrocious and unbearable...
@@gameburn178 Made the same point. BG3, Pathfinder 1 and 2, even the smaller ones - Pillers of Eternity, Wasteland 2 and 3. All of them clearly far superior to this dross. Honestly, they could have made it an isometric rpg, had mostly text based dialog - saved a bunch of money on VA and character animation, and gone back to their roots in DA Origins. It would have been a vastly better game for it.
@threewiseman1 Another idea worth persuing, you are right. They gave up on the tactical rpg combat from the first and to some extent, the second games. And went pretty full action game. Might have worked, having it be simpler is not necessarily worse. Elden Ring is simple, sort of, but the timing matters and skill in general, so we celebrate it.
I am enjoying it. At the start, I felt disappointed. Veilguard felt a lot like FFXVI: action combat-oriented, extremely linear and very simplified RPG and progression systems. Then, a few hours later, when some areas are open to explore, I realized that DA: Veilguard was extremely superior as an RPG and as a game. Customizing your group really matters once you understand combos and when some areas open to exploration the secondary quests are full of mystery and fun well thought puzzles. FFXVI didn't have any of that. Just stupid fetch secondary quests with bad dialogue and no story. I recommend playing in hard difficulty, so you are forced to to think your build and explore to survive. And a lot of people are mad because this game changes a lot the vibe versus later Dragon Age games, and because they force the woke stuff in the character creation and in some dialogue with "they" and being no-binary if you want and blablabla. I get it, I hate that too, but if you only focus on that you are really losing a very good gaming experience for some small stupidity. And to say that its "one of the worst rpg ever made" its obviously a click-bait title. Just ignore this stuff.
what gaming experience? this is an rpg with a dragon age title, they butchered the story, they made a mockery of the lore, they spat on previous choices and personas. If you are playing this for other than the story or if you find the inconsequential, bland, gay and illogical dragon age story the most appealing, then there are other better action rpgs out there which does both story and gameplay better than this slop. I suggest you pirate this and save yourself some money or you like this because of the message then go ahead and waste your money on this because the big corpos will just tear this game down because it doesnt meet expectations. Also, this is the most linear dragon age title to date
The writing and dialogue is horrifically bad. Gameplay isn't Dragon Age at all. I am so sick of party based RPGs being dumbed down into games where you can't control your entire party. What a waste. Bioware hasn't made anything good in over a decade.
You are the only person who reviewed this purely on gameplay, despite so much more to say. Props man, all I cared about was exactly what you focused on. If gameplay was decent I could have skipped the dialogue but.. just wow.
@SeriousPeaches Most games writing is shit nowadays, if the gameplay is good I'll still play it. Skipping every quest dialogue in an MMO but still enjoying the MMO is a good example.
From the powerful and elegant vivienne of the orlesian court, dangerous yet sophisticated and a little bit of snobbery, to a woke mish mash of tokens who are nonbinary and don't like to hurt feelings. There is no doubt in my mind this game needs to be thrown into the 🗑🚮
Thank you for the honest review. I can forgive anything but being blatantly lied to made me very bitter towards this game. This is fraud in my country. They wanted to steal my money by promising me something this game is not. I cannot accept this. There are gaming journalists givning this obviously bad game a 9 or 10/10. Integrity is a very rare thing these days.
Something I also find really important is the itemization. I don’t particularly enjoy arpgs.. even though I’ve really, really tried.. but when it comes to items related to progression curve, nothing beats Diablo 2. Today rarity still follows the “wow” hierarchy: Common, uncommon, rare, epic and legendary.. and most rpgs today throw epics at you in the beginning and before you know it it’s all about legendary. Itemization is an art form, and it can grant the game a huge impact done correctly. Mostly today unfortunately is polarizing and inflating. If everything is legendary nothing is. There’s nothing exciting about the loot. How’s the itemization in Veilguard?
I like how many of the negative reviews are "The Representation issues are the least of the games worries". Exactly how I feel. From all the reviews, both positive and negative ones, I viewed, they all seem to mention the same things that are bad about it and how it's not really a RPG just a game with basic RPG elements. As a oldschool Dragon Age fan I just hate how with each new DA game they spit on Origins and step further away from it. Bring back the mechanics from DA:O, BG3 already proofed people dig old school RPG's still.
The game is unremarkable. There is no sense of freedom to either be "good" or "evil". The game directs you on ideological language use and encourages you to use polite language. Forgettable characters with little or no facial expressions. The story is forgettable, with no deeply moving narratives. It tries to teach and impose a direction on the player, rather than allowing the player to explore the world, to learn, stumble, and fail. Cut scenes happen in quick succession, letting me believe I'm in a movie. Dragon Age: The Veilguard is not nearly as profound and enigmatic as Dragon Age origins. It shall soon be forgotten. If you enjoy it, I wish you all the best.
The biggest drawback emerges with playtime in that you cannot ROLE PLAY in a role playing game. Your protagonist is very on rails in terms of what motivations you want for them or actions you choose for them. You will be subjected to a few variations of the same piss poor dialogue no matter what you do. All in a world that doesn't feel real with companions that don't feel real or even interesting. There's zero immersion, the death sentence of any RPG.
The dialogue is so fucking disjointed and unnatural dude. Topics will just shift mid-conversation for no reason, or sometimes dialogue lines won't flow into the next. A character will say something, another character responds and it has very little to do with what was previously said. Or it's said in such a way that it's just "related", but doesn't make any sense. Like a very grating conversation about cookies. Person 1 "I like the cookies better" Person 2 "Everyone likes the cookies better" Person 1 "I'll eat the fruit." Huh??? That's an actual piece of dialogue in this game. All delivered with deadpan delivery and facial expressions so you can't tell how characters are feeling. My rinky-dink animu JRPG made by 60 people has better dialogue and facial expressions than million dollar companies these days with hundreds of staff working on a single game.
Veilguard did us all a favor. If you ever listened to some reviewer before buying a game and those guys praised veilguard and gave it a very good review, you should never ever trust them again.
11:20 That was a puzzle? Done with BioWare for Eternity. Maybe Larian should pick up the Dragon Age and Mass Effect IP as well, they seem to know how to tell a story.
Can this even be called an RPG? If the game is just lecturing you on ideological beliefs you have to conform to, and you have no choices to make, how can this by definition be and RPG?
Appreciate the compliment but I'm sure there are great reviewers on YT. I would recommend some but don't watch any gaming channels so that I'm not influenced by their opinions. I heard SkillUp did a great job with Veilguard review.
as soon as you said, listen to this melodramatic russian sounding... i laughed out loud liked and subbed immediately i look forward to seeing more of your vids
The DA: Origins banter between companions, you know, just as you are walking around and they chatter in the background ... that is better than the actual story written into Veilguard. Alistair and Morrigan say some hilarious stuff sniping each other.
This game basically seems like an Elder Scrolls Online DLC. The combat is simple, the writing mediocre, the visuals are MMO. The combat in particular looks exactly like ESO, with the rolling around and abilities and flashing red danger zones
Stop calling it RPG. It is no RPG. It is a story-platformer with a single RPG element, a skill tree, which only serves one single purpose - fighting random opponents that appear when jumping from one platform to another to get from point A to B to advance story.
People who were making this game shouldn't be making an RPG in the first place. When I found at level one you can choose a faction which include Grey Warden and Antivan Crow, I said ''Pause'. Both of these factions even if you are new recruits, they are already trained at least level 4 or 5. They shouldn't be level 1. Wardens need to undergo the Joining ritual and after that already developed a network of other wardens. Antivan crows basically are basically Battle Royale. I prefer factions to be introduced later. And there should be a requirement to join those a faction.
Damn it's such a shame because visually the combat does look good :/ But satisfying enemies to fight matters almost as much as the combat feeling good. To me combat is what matters most, if that is good I can play basically anything.
we realize how corrupt the video game press is. they had the courage to talk about goty as good as bg3 and some magazines rated it even better than bg3. disgust and disdain!
I have no problem with the graphics, character designs, eh, the combat looked interesting and I do find the combat fun but had no nostalgia for Dragon Age until 4 days ago lol. In anticipation to play Veilguard I started playing Dragon Age Origins 4 days ago to check out the writing. I put 14 hours by the time Veilguard launched and yeah the writing in DA Origin is on another level. It was so good, it got a hold of me with its setting, characters and player choice. I also hate that everything must be a joke like a marvel movie these days.
The great copy/paste attempt at a game last seen in DA2. These once great gaming companies no longer deserve my $ but thats how it works. The new guys are taking over, Larian and CDPR. The glory days for these old gaming companies are dead and gone.
They nailed the hair. So that’s nice. Edit: actually the hair is ridiculously overdone, too soft and often stupidly full-bodied. Like a shampoo commercial X 100. Goofy looking.
I am one of the few people that doesn’t care if there is a presence of lqbtq+ stuff in games or movies I care more about the story and gameplay itself and this games combat is terrible and the story is one of the worst I have ever seen the game treats you as if you are a 5 year old that needs even the most basic shit explained to you the soundtrack is annoying and the voice acting is below average.
Its better to play the game on easier difficulty. All the harder difficulties do is turn enemies into bigger damage sponges. Its lazy, poorly written, boring and the story isn't good to begin with. I stopped playing and refunded it after 3 hours.
There’s literal children’s cartoons that have darker subject matter than this game. 1 episode of Courage The Cowardly Dog might give these people PTSD 😂
Dude hardly anybody used the tactical camera to play there wasn’t much tactics in origins. People want to hold Orgins up as some godly game it’s not a perfect game it’s a great game especially when considering when it came out, but am positive if Orgins came out today exactly how it was back then just with better graphics people would still bash the combat and writing. I read tons of books and comics and the only game series to impress me with dialogue and choice was Mass Effect.
@@connordutton674I mean you're not wrong. Origins did have some problems but on the whole not only told a better story and gave you a lot more options when it came to dialogue. Plus there is a unique starting zone for each race with different dialogue options depending on your class and stats.
i saw the games starting 50 min's and the only thing I can think of the story is "why does nobody seem to really care?" Most characters say stuff, but they don't feel like they really care. They start gives you the feeling the world is ending but the characters just a a bar brawl and drink a beer -_- I think there are more important things than that.... The story also lost me when the guy wanting to destroy the world basically just forgot what communication skills are and forgot to mention some crucial details. MC messes everything up, and now you as player can clean up your own mess. is that really the way to start a game? And why does the narration start with "And this is where you come in."? That is the most important sentence for me to instantly lose interest in a story.

Isn't strange that the steam reviews are so positive? They must be deleting the negative ones...
With the amount of backlash, it’s strange that the game has the majority of positive and praising reviews. Everything seems dishonest and sugarcoated
A lot of the positive reviews aren't even positive if you actually look into them.
Steam has revamped it reviews policy and it was recently too. I think this has an impact on that. No one buying a badly review game so Steam need to help that. Every bought game are plus for Steam so there's that.

The opening of Metaphore is like 4 hours before the game really starts. mostly prologue up to that point.
And even that prologue is already more interesting than this game probably ever will be. If all the other reviews are to be believed.

The most impressive feat was that they convinced 77k players on Steam to not only buy this, but also play this all at once.

Every dragon age is a new main character. This Rook is the most pointless of all of them though as they have nothing important about them to justify being the leader.

@@StanjeBrojila Imagine this game coming out after BG3. Gamers know that games like Veilguard don't have to be made anymore.
You can hear the disappointment in your voice.
THANK YOU, for actually being honest.
Remember, they spend 10 years & hundreds of millions of $, developing this piece of digital garbage....
The absolute state of modern day AAA gaming.
Person 1 "I like the cookies better"
Person 2 "Everyone likes the cookies better"
Person 1 "I'll eat the fruit."
Huh??? That's an actual piece of dialogue in this game. All delivered with deadpan delivery and facial expressions so you can't tell how characters are feeling. My rinky-dink animu JRPG made by 60 people has better dialogue and facial expressions than million dollar companies these days with hundreds of staff working on a single game.

Your companions can't die...? This is baby's first RPG lol. How far Bioware has fallen. Shame
Dragon Age 2 was decent. Bioware was given an impossible time-frame and thus they decided to focus on the characters, writing and combat.

Its better to play the game on easier difficulty. All the harder difficulties do is turn enemies into bigger damage sponges. Its lazy, poorly written, boring and the story isn't good to begin with. I stopped playing and refunded it after 3 hours.

To bad that they went away from isometric tactical combat. In my opinion, Dragon Age Origins is still the best game in the series.

People want to hold Orgins up as some godly game it’s not a perfect game it’s a great game especially when considering when it came out, but am positive if Orgins came out today exactly how it was back then just with better graphics people would still bash the combat and writing. @@connordutton674I mean you're not wrong. Origins did have some problems but on the whole not only told a better story and gave you a lot more options when it came to dialogue. Plus there is a unique starting zone for each race with different dialogue options depending on your class and stats.
