I got some of these because I wanted a lot of pollinator plants in my yard and I’m having so much fun taking care of her. I’m in Deep South Texas so I’m hoping it’ll make it thru winter
I just purchased my first firecracker plant. The one question I forgot to ask the nursery before I left was, how to deadhead the plant. I went through so many videos here on RUclips trying to find the answer. Thank you so much for addressing that question in your video! Most horticulturists tend to skip that type of information in their videos. Thank you again. I will come back to your channel with any questions in the future.
I love it!! We had a 4th of July party earlier in the week. It sparked several conversations. It wasn't blooming as much as it had when I first purchased it, but it's also been raining a lot here in Florida. Once it had a couple days of straight sunlight, it bloomed like crazy again! Definitely one of my favorites now! Thanks again!
Just got 12 small ones (2" container 5" tall) from Sandys nursery, im here in Tx 130 miles north of Houston, I can never find them any more, the hummers just go crazy, They do die out in the winter. I was told to put them in the ground this time, because the pots freeze I never thought of that. Im split zone 8-9 will they survive the winter if i cover them like i do my banana trees.
My old neighbor planted some in spring by late summer it was running a muck everywhere..lol. They're cool actually with a bed you can devote to it, planted with both red and white ones its like a peppermint stick party 😉👍
I love your videos. I just moved to South Florida a month & a half ago and love learning about all of the tropical plants I can try growing. Especially to attract hummingbirds. Been watching your channel months now. You always are very informative and keep me entertained. 😊
I had mine in an outer pot with no drainage. Rain flooded it without me noticing (about a week, maybe longer; I was sick). I cut everything back that was dead and it grew back beautifully. They are tough!
This was a great and very helpful video! May I ask... is it possible to split a firecracker plant without hurting it? I have a very old leggy one that came with the house I bought in SW FL and would like to split a new smaller one i got to plant around it as repotting and help fill it in. Please advise?? Thank you!
and also a pale peachy color! They had white ones at the nursery too, but i had to go bright for the hummingbirds. ... and i love bright obnoxious colors. lol.
Our school had this all over the floor planters. Really pretty when they hang down. I never knew their name until this. I was googling for another plant haha (lipstick aglaonema!). Going to see if any house nearby has this in their front hard and.. maybe.. cut some. First time I google the zones but I am in 11b :D
Cool. I have Cardinal plant, red bee balm, and honeysuckle vine for hummies. These are all native plants, but your Mexican variety would be familiar with hummies too.
Hi Jeff! Thanks for all the info! :-) do you know if russelias can be propagated by cuttings? I read sthg on this line a while ago and I tried it but it was a miserable failure... 😅 But maybe fall was not the best time of the year to try it...
Hello! They can be propagted by cuttings, but if they don't have a good amount of heat and really well draining soil they do tend to rot easily, and a good amount of humidity is useful also because then they wont loose moisture through the leaves, and can focus energy on root production instead of them struggling to take up water to stay hydrated. I'd definitely give a try again when the weather warms up!
pretty plant, is that what you had growing on the wall hanging down on the walk way, you said you should cut it back but the humming birds liked it so much?
I had one in a pot, and accidentally broke a stem off. I stuck it in the soil in the pot, and it rooted. I now have it growing in the ground, and I noticed that it sends up sprouts from root runners. I dug up several of them and potted them up.

You just cut back anything that looks scraggily and cut the dead back hard (leave about 3" of stem). It will regrow.

Thank you for the video, have you been successful growing these in pots?
Hi Jeff, where do you usually buy these tropical plants? I don't see them in my local nursery. Thanks!
Hi Chang! I get many of my tropicals from a local nursery here in St. Louis called Greenscape Gardens.

Is it better to put in pots because there so prolific ?
Could you maybe do a hummingbird butterfly garden idea, or pots. Anything you do is great thanks.
I am working on it, but have to wait for the weather to improve. Might be several weeks. :(

Russilia plants how to cutting grow

This can also be grown under water..
I have this in my tank.
Though it doesn't flourish as in soil but it grows under water
All of the stems died when the pot got flooded. I was able to revive it by removing the standing water and keeping it in the sun.
