  • Our Solar system set up, is one of the biggest questions we get asked about. For those of you that have asked....we have finally put together a video just for you! We dive into the details of our solar set up, our solar panels, our inverter, our chargers, our battery banks and how and why we installed this system. We discuss how it works, how we did it and even how we would change it (looking back in hindsight). This is a very informational video out "techy-things" and RV solar, so it is a little different from our normal travel videos. Hope you enjoy it!

    Nice set up. Just gotta make sure the fridge is on "gas only" when using inverter, in "auto" it always chooses shore power and in this case the batteries. May wanna invest in Trimetric battery monitor, best thing ever. Best wishes to you and your family and thank you for the videos. God bless you guys.

    I have a lot to learn about solar, but, I LOVE the flexibility of having the solar panels on the ground to position them just right to get the maximum amount of power from the sun. Thanks for sharing.

  • @philc.9280

    HI, noticed many rv's place the panels on the ground. some even they them flat without the framework. I got tired of that and now rigged up plastic arms with connectors and use 2 panels as window awnings to block sun from the rig. they are angled to capture more sun . so the rig stays cool and provides solar without getting the panels all dirty. they just lift off when closing up. just another choice. I love your pvc pipe frame however.

    A little something that can help keep all your batteries up when towing is a Battery isolator , It allows all the batteries in your system to be charged from the tow vehicle when running. It connects from the Alternator to each battery in your system. I installed one on own John Deere motor-home to keep Motor starting, Generator and cabin batteries fully charged.

    We all find ourselves calling it 110, 115, 120, truly it’s 120/240 in the US but splitting hairs anyway. It’s cool how many different ways things can be done.. I don’t think charging the front batteries from the back batteries is the most efficient way, plus taking 12v to run an inverter, to charge front batteries and a 12 volt converter definitely has huge losses, but you have fair reasons to do what you’re doing and in the end, it’s free power from the sun anyway. Enjoyed your video.

    I like your system having separate battery configurations. I think I'll fashion mine after yours with the exception of adding a Blue Marine Switch (1,2,1+2, off) after the charge controller to select what set of batteries to charge, the stand alone, the original coach batteries, or both at the same time. Nice video...thanx!

    I really like the way you have your solar system setup with two independent battery system. That is a great idea. I am going to try to do the same with my Travel Trailer. I use Trojan AGM batteries and have them all inside under the couch up front. The reason why I like to keep all the batteries inside is the seasonal temperatures varies so much here in Utah that keeping the batteries outside on the tongue of the trailer really give the batteries some heavy abuse making their life shorter. Keeping the batteries inside, the temperatures aren't as hard on the batteries because the trailer keeps them from the elements. With the room I have up on the tongue now, I mounted a tongue tool box where I can keep outdoor essentials in them. I just hate to see your Trojan T105s have a shorter life because of the Seasonal temperatures. I hope this idea help.

    I think you should not run the 12V converter from the inverter, add up the conversion loss on the inverter plus the conversion loss on the 12V charger for the front batteries, you're probably looking at 60% loss. You'd do better with a dual battery charger and split it between the front and the AGMs, and you can set for "A" charge, "B" charge, or priority charge 1 fully then the other. Your conversion loss from solar to the battery charge would be around 30% total through the dual-bank charger. Charging batteries from batteries is almost always hugely inefficient.

    • @Mangler316
      @Mangler316 7 лет назад

      I was thinking the same thing. I simply turn off the breaker for the converter as well as the refrigerator and A/C when I am running off the inverter.

    • @DENMONKEY
      @DENMONKEY 5 лет назад

      Definitely. Wasting power through all of thhe chargers and inverters. Just use the power that you have as separate systems. There is really no logic in using one battery system to charge another like that. I like the idea of trying new things but this idea is very ineffective and supremely inefficient.

    With this hook up you're running the converter which is drawing a lot to charge the front batteries. That's eating a lot of power. A marine AB switch is in order to draw off the desired bank. The draw gauges are more accurate with a shunt. Your system needs just a little more splitting to become efficient.

  • @mymcvittie

    Great system, and smart to separate the two systems! I would suggest you not charge your front batteries from the rear - you should be able to isolate the charger on the front and still power the rest of your RV through the shore power plug. Going 12v, inverter to 110v, then converter/charger to 12v again is a huge waste of power. You'd be better off getting another small solar panel (even 40w) and small charge controller, to charge your front batteries (if you're sitting for a while), rather than that very inefficient 12-110-12v process. I assume your truck also charges your front house batteries while you are driving? If so, you may not even need a small panel for the front unless you are parked for more than a few days, especially if your lights are LED.

    I think the only advantage of this system is that it's easy to take out and doesn't integrate with the RV at all. It's very inconvenient to have a system like that unless of course you're mostly staying in places with full hookups. Personally I'd rather go with a fully integrated system by combining a MPPT charge controller with a hybrid charger/inverter and a control module so the system automatically distributes the various inputs (shore, generator, solar, batteries) to the rv where it's needed. Hybrid charger/inverters also combine multiple inputs to meet higher energy requirements, i.e. you're hooked up with a regular 15 amp extension cord at a friends house but you want to run the induction cooktop or the AC. The right inverter/charger can automatically supplement the 15amp shore power with solar and/or batteries to accommodate the power requirements for the AC unit without blowing your friends house fuse.

      I was wondering why you didn't run the cables on the outside of the camper through a conduit and then into the storage bay, instead of running them down the roof and into the bathroom and adding to the amount of holes you have in the roof. Also, have you considered adding a bug shield for the front of the panels to keep them clean and a little more aerodynamic?

  • @dkh1020
    @dkh1020 7 лет назад +2

    Greetings, my system is very similar. I also run 3 systems (110, 12v & 24v) I went with 24 volt for efficiency. I have 1,000 watts of solar that I ground deploy. I also didn't want to impact the house battery because it powers the jack and supplies power to the breakaway switch. My inverter is 3,500 watts and has a built in transfer switch. So it is hard wired between the 110 shore power and the 110 side in my panel.On shore power or generator, it is a simple pass through otherwise the inverter kicks in. The inverter also charges my 24 volt bank when on shore power or generator.I do not use the house battery to power any other other DC loads. I have 4 AGM 6 volt batteries in series to give me 24 volts. I also have a step down transformer wired into the DC side of my panel that gives me 12 volts to power all other DC loads. The factory converter was disconnected from the DC panel, however I still feed it 110 from shore or my generator. I do not use the inverter to power the converter. Since I'm not using the house battery, it only charges on generator or shore power. Has worked out nicely.

    Just discovered ur RUclips channel, and it is great. I too don’t understand about using all plugs in trailer with new solar setup. I understand how u wired the female 30Amp connector directly into the inverter, but am missing how the other end of a loose cord works with all your existing presided AC outlets. I have a B+ (not a trailer), so that may be where confusion occurs. In my motor home, my shore power connection is fixed on side of motor home, and I plug one end of my 30 A cord to it, and other to campsite hookup box. Is the other end of your cord plugged into your shore connection on your trailer? Because, it looks like it is just rolled up in that compartment?? Please expound on that part of connection. Thanks.

    So, would you run the generator for a while overnight to charge either the front or bank banks back up to full? At 60-70%, that doesn't leave you a lot of 12V power left for the night, if I understand it right.

  • @MrJimmyBiggs

    This helped me so much! I want to be able to plug my trailer into the inverter and have access to all the power in the trailer but didn't know how to do it without creating that charging loop. Now I know! although we leave our trailer unattended for all week as we can only access it on the weekends so I need to make sure my batteries are always charging. So if I do the front battery system, maybe I should do separate solar so I don't need to leave my inverter on all week?

    • @Totally-trailer
      @Totally-trailer  7 лет назад

      You are correct and this was a concern, but we also knew we were adding a lot of additional items for full time living. So with some careful thought to balance we kept heavier items in the front and did not add anything else heavy to the back of the trailer. I will even move things around sometimes when our tanks are full or empty to help compensate for the changes in weight. Its become a balancing act but have not had any problems. We try to be more tongue heavy when ever were not sure. This trailer also allows for 200lbs to be added to the very back on the extended rear bumper/bike rack which we do not use.

    6:24 I'm curious why you bought those bus bars and your not using them? They are intended to be used in such a fashion as to avoid putting all the wires on the same post. Each screw along the length of the bar is meant to take a wire of its own thus eliminating the need to gang them up on the "feeder" lug of the bar.

Ihave a couple of questions though.1 Your AGM battery charger for the AGM batteries, Does the power for this AGM charger come from when you are hooked up to shore power or a generator? and can you charge the AGM batteries using both solar and shore/generator at the same time.2 can you give a link for the AGM battery charger please?3 Can you give a link to the video where you installed the RV plug into the inverter.thank you again great video.

      I really liked the video thanks. Gave me some good ideas. Just wondering. Do you feel you have a lot of power loss by stepping up the power from the solar panels through the invertor and then stepping that down again to charge the front batteries?

    Just so you know it's ok to say 120v or 110v. It's the same thing. In fact in a house power actually fluctuates from 110-130 depending how far out of town you are and distance to the nearest transformer. Also, 220v & 240v are the same. Take a look at regular lightbulbs sometime. Some say 120v while others will say 115v and if you look at lightbulbs listed as "rough" service they will say 130v. Those aren't the voltages they require to operate, those are the max voltages they can tolerate without blowing or failing. This is why the "rough" service bulbs cost more and also why you should always use them if you live out of town and/or use them in portable work lights. The filaments are stronger. By the way I love your set up but I have to agree with several of the comments about doing the 12v-120v-12v being inefficient.

    I am still in the planning phase for our solar set up. Hoping to install in summer of 2018. Your approach is very interesting. I was thinking about keeping the original battery in the camper as a back up with an A/B switch and separate charger. Currently running 2 six volt, and will be installing two more in a couple weeks. Totally off topic but where did you get your flag pole mounted to your ladder?

    What is that thing you have off of the ladder? it almost looks like a PVC pipe? How come you don't have a can Antenna for the Wi-FI? Then flash the router to a dd-wrt so that way you can adjust the RF power to the router. Then from the router install some either net RJ-45 jacks and run them from the back of the router.

    I watched this earlier then I just watched it again. I like the idea of using solar to recharge the "House" batteries without tying them directly into the solar panels. It is safer and makes the system easier to disconnect and keep when you sell the trailer.

  • @williamklein6749
    @williamklein6749 7 лет назад

    Is two solar panels enough for your system? I would think you'd need at least 4 to keep your battery bank full.

  • @robertb2468
    @robertb2468 6 лет назад +1

    This is not to criticize but very important. So you use 200 w solar to the charge controller to charge the large battery bank. Then use the inverter to power another charger for the separate house battery's. Its very inefficient due to panels only put out 90% of rating, PMW controller looses 30%(MPPT only10% loss) Inverter looses 5-10% , your panel wiring is too long for #10awg conductors loss of 8% as you have them connected in parallel, series for you would be better. And Ohms law calculations (180 watts divided by 21.7 open circuit volts = 8.29 Amps show that it is impossible for you to ever get 15 - 18 amps , your controller read out has to be wrong if you claim this much amperage. Also correct conductor sizing and fuse size and placement are needed for fire safety. I have engineered systems for years and it boggles my mind that someone would advise you to do this. I have showed it to my colleges and they are just as puzzled.

  • @donaldsmith3048

    I think charging your front battery from the back batteries by changing power to 120 V then back to 12V you loose to much. I think a switch that you can charge all battery from solor without changing it to 120V. A switch will keep them different or together..

    So the best I can tell, your battery output to the Inverter is 24VDC and your charging your batteriers with 12VDC from the panels and the charge controller? I say this because your listed Inverter ( Samlex PST-2000-24 PST Series Pure Sine Wave DC-AC Power Inverter, 2000W Continuos Power Output), requires 24VDC input. I think something is wrong here maybe.

      Thats a good questions I don't think with this set up we could run indefinitely. We would need lots of sunny days in a row and at least 1 or maybe even 2 more panels. But we have done up to 7 days with no problem. Its all about how much you conserve and how many hours of sunshine you get.

    • @Totally-trailer
      @Totally-trailer  7 лет назад

      The inverter has an alarm that will ring when you are drawing to many amps and will shut down before there is any damage. Once you lower the usage you can turn it back on and your good to go
