This is freaking awesome, congrats Cap and Co. One interesting theory is the JATM or other missile in development (the US has reportedly two or three "next-gen" air-to-air missiles in development - lookup the Peregrine missile for example, a small cheap missile to double medium range carrying capacity or another one is a small/light kinetic kill model), will utilize a portion of the second pulse of rocket power, or perhaps a special third motor in order to fire it once it goes terminal. This would boost the PK considerably based on the theory modern missiles are great, but stealth and tactics will likely defeat long-range missiles without the terminal boost.
Just a small cosmetic detail error on the EX model you are using: The small fairing, containing RWR and ECM equipment, on the right tail fin should be as large as the one on the port fin. This is the very first thing I look for to determine the version of a F-15.

Awesome work gents! This is exactly what I’m talking about. An AIM-260 should have a longer range and higher PK than a PL-15, as that’s the missile it was designed to out range and outperform. Having designed the first AA missiles and with tons of development and recorded real world data, it’s also understandable that the sensors and tracking algorithms would be better on the US side.

I about fell out of my chair when I saw this "AIM-260" design. I came up with that configuration years ago and put it out "into the wild". Surprised someone put it in DCS. Mine was based on the 10" ESSM motor however.
Do you have the ability to model the F-15’s with FAST (fuel and sensor tactical) Packs to increase their fuel load and if so does it reduce the number of missiles they can carry?
Anyone here know what happened with the SABOT type missile that was talked about in 2005ish? It was said to be completely new time of dual missile. One large body extreme speed massive missile is launched toward a target, then once it goes so many miles iirc it was over 100 the smaller and highly manueverable missile is released from the carrier sabot missile, giving a large warhead on a small manueverable and fast missile from well beyond typical radar ranges. So it was a missile in a missile. They said it was like using a stealth plane to carry the missile to a good range without endangering pilots. Did they kill it for drones? Hadnt hear a peep since. wish I could remember where I saw the little blurb.
Great stuff as always! In my humble yet valued opinion, I suggest removing smoke trails from the Fox3s! Since it was brought up to me a day ago: What are your guys opinion on the missing FFB on modern flight sticks? I still use a Logitech Force 3D pro with FFB and thought this was standard by now.
So Cap, for your conclusion on having more missiles. It's that, plus the US simply gaining range parity. Once they gain the range with China, either equal or greater, it allows the greater experience and training of US pilots to take over. I think we can all pretty much agree internationally, one of the benefits of the massive US air assets and budget for the past half-century (plus) is excellent training combining the most experienced air doctrine and air combat knowledge worldwide. China can copy US training and claim to have superior pilots, but they haven't flown the sorties and gained the collective debrief knowledge (it must be several hundred thousand in total over the past couple of decades).
It may not even be possible to model properly but I'd love to see how a Meteor fairs in this same situation against the AIM-260 with the throttled thrust accounted for accurately rather than as they are modded currently with just a longer burn. My guess is the ability to cruise long distance to target slower and then throttle up at the end and still have thrust so it isn't reliant purely on kinetic energy in the terminal phase is far more valuable in BVR than pure maximum range is. If nothing else this simulation has shown that range is only really valuable if the missile has enough legs at the final moments.

@@comediangj4955 yep and DACT is basically a real life game. Pilots wouldn’t practice WVR combat if it was redundant. Missiles can be dodged, jammed, decoyed and all the time, the merge approaches….
How do the AI's know when to defend? Do they know the performance of the missile being fired at them? How did you code the fire control computer? Is it based on in game testing? How do the AI know when to shoot?
Once the victim detects the missile's radar then they perform standardised anti-missile manouvers based on their skill level. Same way a human will defend.
Just a quick point - you keep talking about Mach as though it's a fixed speed. It's a function of air temperature. It varies. On the ground in Dubai the air temperature can be as high as 40-50 degrees C. Top end for Mach there is 360 m/s. Get above around 36,000 though and the temperature is fairly reliably around -56 degrees C, so Mach there is 295 m/s. A delta of 65 m/s, or to turn that into knots - about 126kts, which obviously would be 252kts at Mach 2, and 378kts at Mach 3. Simply guestimating based on the speed is going to get you wildly off base.
Case in point - at 13:28 you described a missile as going "at about Mach 2", when it was 30,000ft and doing 1513kn. At that altitude in a standard atmosphere, the temperature would be -44.5 degrees C, which would make Mach equal to 589kn, meaning the missile was doing closer to 2.56 Mach.
Doesn't it make more sense for the 2nd stage to go ballistic at initial separation, and then use the propellant to increase terminal velocity and increase chance of hit?
That's how it works, we only get warnings once a fox 3 goes active. It's more humans assuming because we have fired a missile, they probably have as well, certainly for us in the J-15s we knew we were at a disadvantage so we had to be a bit more defensive minded. AI for instance only attempt to beat the missile once the missile goes Pitbull, @13.30 shows this a bit. Hope that makes sense, probably not even answered the question 😂
The real question is: how well will this tech work if you include F35 (F22 because we don’t have F35) to target the enemy and the F15EX lobs missiles from their track
Given that a trained fighter pilot would/should defend against a missile, these super long range missiles don't make sense to me. Cost per unit and # carried would be significant limitations. Missile trucks, though...
Great video, the only strange thing is that I haven't seen any of these mods you guys have made online for download. I know they're janky and still in development but I feel like people would love to play around with the more modern stuff even if it's a bit wonky (people love the F22 and SU57 mods and they're not exactly polished). Do you guys have plans to release this stuff or nah?
If that modern weapons project pans out, you'll be doing an absolute yeoman's job for the community. Will it be including more than just missiles? Bombs, rockets, guns, ecm, targeting, etc? Sounds?
i hope MBDA makes a widebody Meteor lol ramjet with even longer range than the wide body rocket engine ones... here's a question: will the sourcecode of these missiles be open source or will it remain private?
More important is to make an IR version of Meteor. Active seeking is the weakest aspect of modern air to air missiles and the part that tells your enemy they are under attack and how to escape.
@@LondonSteveLee nah. thats worthless. especially against modern aircraft with MWS and DASS. plus, the range will be SIGNIFICANTLY reduced because of weather conditions and whatnot. there's a reason for why radar is used instead of IR for these very long range missiles... if there wasn't, there'd proably be an IR version already
@@zahnatom The missile should be steered in from the host aircraft and/or AWACs, there is practically zero chance of escape from a modern IR missiles once it has you in its "sight" - yes they are more affect by weather but they are still much harder to jam. in contrast RADAR is much easier to defeat and as we have more and more pilotless aircraft or drones made largely of composites or plastics along with towable decoys, the less useful RADAR is.

Seems to me the problem with the AIM-260 is its relying on those DACS thrusters taken from a PAC-3 optimized to intercept ballistic missiles, they are good up high where the air is thin but down low it simply doesnt throw as much air around as a large control surface which can grab the air, and so it cant turn very tight.

Awesome content, how would a conventional air strike, on Iran, by collation force, highly defended, testing a full-blown air battle, via ,drones, fantom radar fighters, basically what "your" strategic playbook .
Love the eagle and hornet 🔥🔥💙
I love FlyByWire. Always cheerful and brightens my day
Thanks man ❤
Interesting modelling. You do realize that now we’ll want you to try the same things with F-16 and F-18 variants.
Already got F-16/18 working with AIM-260 :)
@@grimreapers
Bloody fantastic. I’ve played the game exactly once - takes up too much space that I need on MacBook for work. Enjoyed it a lot, though it was a bit slow with all the emulation. If I make enough money off my channel and books…
You run some really interesting and fun scenarios. They point to some interesting Geopolitical implications, especially this one.
Though I have doubts about the competency of China’s aviation sector where exceptionally complex technologies are concerned.
There’s also non-traditional sensor systems. There has been some work with claimed success on Gravitic detection. I have a copy of the paper if you are interested. Those could reduce the usefulness of stealth, but not any time soon.
You’ve got a fan Cap, thanks to you and the rest of the Grim Reapers for some amazing and thought provoking entertainment.
I am very interested indeed in your weapons modernization program!
can you adjust the maneuverability in the terminal phase of the missiles ? that's quite an important characteristics and makes a big differences between the missiles
How do you figure? None of the missiles were defeated with maneuvers. All kinematics as far as I can see.
Sort of. We can adjust the weight of the missile body, which affects the manouverability.
Everything I’ve read says the 260 looks exactly like a 120. The difference is rocket propellant, electronics, and software.
People constantly say that dogfights are redundant, yet here you are, even with new missiles, still going to guns…..
...IN A GAME
@@comediangj4955 irl missiles arent always going to work
Yup, that;s why we run these tests.
Because it's got artificial INTELLIGENCE. 🤦♂️
Agreed, but it's too complex to compute "on the fly" so I just use rough averages when speaking on the vids.
@@grimreapers Yeah - I'm just nitpicking I guess. Still love the videos. 🙂
Next us missile is long range engagement weapon
My only complain on this video is the Cap doesnt use TWS
We noticed that there is a problem with TWS in longer ranges than 50 NM that makes missiles always miss
AIM-260 currently not programmed for TWS.
@@grimreapers ah that makes sense
Doesn't it make more sense for the 2nd stage to go ballistic at initial separation, and then use the propellant to increase terminal velocity and increase chance of hit?
With this could you please re do Australia vs China with Australia using the 260 and the LRASM?
Would like to see these fights with the missile launch warnings disabled and just the putbill/active missile warnings.
These modern planes have MWS which can detect missiles before they go active. Yes we can turn them off.
This video suggests EXs in the back to keep fighters low and awacs away, and raptors up front with 120D from above to kill their fighters.
Yup we are already working on Raptor/F-15 sensor fusing which will allow this.
The real question is: how well will this tech work if you include F35 (F22 because we don’t have F35) to target the enemy and the F15EX lobs missiles from their track
I can't help wondering apart from the aircraft, how many millions of $ did the missiles cost that did nothing apart from fly?
Hahaha…in the end all that mattered was Guns 😂
All the JATM 260 needs is datalink guidance, from peer to peer. It can even be guided by awacs
@17:17 RUUNN FORRRIIIISSST RUUUNNN

my question is what happens to the discarded portion? Do we recover it or let it sink to the bottom of the ocean?
wow, what w visualisations
Great video, great fight
Thank you
Given that a trained fighter pilot would/should defend against a missile, these super long range missiles don't make sense to me.
Cost per unit and # carried would be significant limitations.
Missile trucks, though...
I wonder how well these would guide with a raptor or fat Amy in close doing the data link work but undetected 🤔
Way ahead of you Tony :)
It surprised me, that only starting now we will have multiple staged air to air missiles.
This is such a basic thing in rocket science
yup
wish DCS would add more weapons for fa18
This outfit is turning into a drag club.
The missle range war just makes me wonder about how far a modern telephone pole could fly under a Super Tomcat EX..
Then they took a “giant leap forward” nice one
where can i get a download for these missles? i would love to use them, i bet others would too
F15EX will be the missile truck for the F35 and F22
Great video, the only strange thing is that I haven't seen any of these mods you guys have made online for download. I know they're janky and still in development but I feel like people would love to play around with the more modern stuff even if it's a bit wonky (people love the F22 and SU57 mods and they're not exactly polished). Do you guys have plans to release this stuff or nah?
hello guys! amazing video! so where can i get the modern missiles?
11:45 one of them looks less dead than the others
If that modern weapons project pans out, you'll be doing an absolute yeoman's job for the community. Will it be including more than just missiles?
Bombs, rockets, guns, ecm, targeting, etc? Sounds?
Will you make these missiles available to us?
i hope MBDA makes a widebody Meteor lol
ramjet with even longer range than the wide body rocket engine ones...
here's a question: will the sourcecode of these missiles be open source or will it remain private?
Will be public once the entire pack is completed.
@@grimreapers good to hear, thanks.
Any chance we could see air launched hypersonic a to g missles like the Kinzal or agm 183 arrow (even though it isn’t in service yet) for use in war games
Oh yes, working on it.
@@grimreapers awesome
Guys, come on! Stop embarrassing ED... (whisper) don't stop!
This stuff is amazing, and truly shows what these platforms and the game are truly capable of, (within legal reason). Now if you guys could really pressure them into Vulkan. :) Keep em coming GR!
should try to recreate operation sky shield
Isn’t it better to fly straight, let them fire at their max range, then enter the crank and waste their missiles?
Seems to me the problem with the AIM-260 is its relying on those DACS thrusters taken from a PAC-3 optimized to intercept ballistic missiles, they are good up high where the air is thin but down low it simply doesnt throw as much air around as a large control surface which can grab the air, and so it cant turn very tight.
Yup
I'm curious about the new AIM 260, could you all do a video on it?
Russia is working on a new weapon as well. The GE-Front-Loader Washing Machine.
