Watching again a year later and 180 bottles into my journey! I really enjoy the Knob Creek 12yr and the 1792 12yr! The Weller 12 yr is a really nice wheated pour! Cheers!
This was a really interesting video to watch. Blind tastings can reveal so much thanks to the removal of label bias. I've been enjoying your channel very much and I feel that your recommendations have been excellent. Thanks!
I've never heard the flavors of whiskey described in so much detail before or with so much passion or imagined it could have so many different flavors!
That was fun to watch & listen! It really helps me connect the comments to the bourbons when you don't move the glasses around when ranking - thank you! The letter cards help too. Your comments are the best part!
Cool review! I haven't tried any of these. But I finally cracked my Elijah Craig BP C919 (your review a couple months back convinced me I had to get a bottle) what an incredible experience! A single dram lasted all evening! Cheers!!!
I've not had any of these (yet), but your ranking is exactly what I expected. Old Forester Birthday Bourbon and Knob Creek 12 are both near the top of my "to buy" list, though KC 12 is far more obtainable.
Well done review Jason. Not surprised by the results . I would have ranked these exactly the same. You do a great job with your reviews i watch alot of bourbon reviews and must say your as good at it As anyone out there . Keep up the good work.
So when you unveiled your list of 12 year options, there was no question the Old Forester would win, but I am glad the 1 attainable bourbon of Knob Creek 12 year finished second. Love Old Forester, just never even seen it available. Thanks and great review!
Knob creek 12 is super underrated. But the more recent batches of knob smell more like a berry cheesecake smell. Lot of oak too. Not as much vanilla as this one
I've been debating on grabbing a KC12 after I picked up a 8.5 year SiB pick and wasn't digging it as much as I had hoped, but it may just need to open up a bit still. Fun lineup, thanks for another informative video!
Agreed. Birthday Bourbon is an all-time must have. Surprised about the Weller-I've heard good reviews. A bad rick? Hmm ... 🤔 Also, a shame about the Calumet not disclosing sources. I get it, but if I'm paying for a 10-yr. or better, damned right I want to know what's in it! 🥃🥃
Very nice review I've had the Weller 12 and most of the Weller line up. Nice but not chart breaking in my view. Definitely looking to try that Old Forrester your profile of that one hits my sweet spot looking to compare your notes to my pallette. Great job.
Great lineup, I’m actually a big fan of that Knob 12. Need to find a backup. And I’m opening that 2018 OFBB on May 30th for my 40th birthday! Can’t wait
Another Great Review Jason! I really like KC. I have pick one up. Wellers and OF Birthday Bourbon are not available or insane price in area. Thanks. Cheers!
I’ve heard calumet was Barton’s distillate, so I’d expect 1792 to have the preferred barrels. Haven’t had the Weller or OFBB and the Knob 12 is my favorite.
Finally got around to opening my Knob Creek 12 yr. WOW, to me I now laugh at Blantons! Really coats the palate with a sweet/oaky taste that give a great smooth long finish. For the money this is one of the best values in bourbon. It is only beaten by Wild Turkey 101 for value.
Awesome video! My sister just got me a bottle of the Knobb Creek 12 year last week for a birthday present. I asked her to go back and I'd pay her for another. So good! Really want to try the OF now.
I'm really enjoying your channel and particularly like this match up because I got my bottle of Knob Creek 12 just today and agree completely with your notes. Now if I could just get that bottle of OF birthday 12. Fat chance!!
Coincidentally, I’m in Lexington for a few days and the first stop had a lone bottle of KC12.... but not $60 unfortunately. Never seen it in my home state of Texas. Visiting Barton/1792 on Monday and probably another distillery on the way home. Anything I should be on the lookout for? Another great bit of content.
The takeaway: Knob Creek 12 is the s*** among readily-sourceable 12-year-olds - which confirms my choice for the next bottle to pick up. Thanks, M & D!
I pretty much guessed as you took notes and I was spot on. Although I couldn’t figure out why you chose that Calumet. That is one skunk of a pour. Great episode!
Really good analysis of the quality of aged bourbon at the front end of the video. Many of the 12 years are very hard to find and frankly not often worth the effort. I have Weller 12 and prefer Antique 107. Paying more than $100 for Weller 12 is just not worth it. I'll purchase 107 anytime I can but will not be purchasing W12 again.
Amazed that other than the O.F. B-Day, Knob Crick 12 handed everything else a whipping from your palate. Then a few months later it ends up Breaking Bourbon's 2020 Whiskey of the Year. Picked up 1 myself today and then re-caught this video. Fun blind taster and a cool panel with the All 12 year. I'm not a general underdog shill but nice to see a cheaper bottle do so well
@@TheMashandDrum oh no doubt lol.. Gunna have to get that KC12 now.. seen too many good things about it and wish I didn't pass on it now.. but oh well ha.. cheers man
The 1792 is becoming more than of my favorite as it opens up. It's getting sweeter to balance out the oak. If I did this again the 1792 would probably take 2nd I think.
Nice job, great information!! (May have been fairer to use current editions I.E. current Old Forrester vs. your favorite OF). I'll be looking for the Knob Creek 12 and the 1792.
I find my taste preferences align closely with yours. I have never tried the Old Forester ( really hard to find Birthday Bourbon!) but I love KC 12 and am not impressed by Weller 12, nor Pappy 12 for that matter!
Since you had the black saddle 12 year in the background, I thought for sure it was going to be in on the tasting. I was curious to what you think of it.
I love these - blind tastings just take out the label bias and bring it down to whats actually in the glass....lots for me to think about! What is your favorite in the Old Forester lineup? I have yet to try them but sounds like I need to now :)
I think it's interesting that you state older does not mean better. I totally agree. Some may disagree, but I think the 20y and 23y Pappy is not nearly as good as the 15y ones. I've had bottles where the first couple of pours actually taste like a dusty old barrel to me. I much prefer the 15y. I've never had a bad pour of 15y. It sucks that the Bourbon boom has made a lot of great bottles hard to impossible to get. This was not the case 25 years ago. As a drinker who lives in Kentucky and grew up on Bourbon, I've been lucky enough to try almost all of them. I can't do blind taste tests because I instantly recognize most of them. These Bourbon makers need to get on the ball and increase production. I know they're scared to death the boom will die down but Bourbon is no longer seen as your grandfathers drink. I don't think it's going anywhere.
Nothing against Gen Y, but I wish they would've gotten into scotch rather than bourbon. The "bourbon boom" that Gen Y caused has made most of my favorites become very hard to find and WAY overpriced. 20 years ago, I routinely bought Blanton's and Rock Hill Farms for $45 to $55 per bottle, and Pappy was regularly on the shelf. If I had known Gen Y was going to buy up all the bourbon and cause even Weller Special Reserve to be hard to find, I would've bought a bunch of Pappy, Blanton's and Rock Hill Farms in the early 2000's. I was so used to them being easy to get, and now it's just frustrating to watch people pay an absurd $500 to $1000 for Pappy 15.
I am honored to be your first view today. Lowest price I have seen Weller 12 is $89 at some Indian liquor store in a Chicago suburb. Should have picked it up. Birthday Bourbon there was $300. I picked up Weller Full Proof instead for $200 and Old Fitzgerald 15 for $300 - both probably way overpriced.
Erik panozzo It was at some obscure Indian liquor store in a suburb of Chicago that doesn’t have a web presence. I wish I could tell you it’s name. But I don’t remember it as I was only visiting Chicago for two days to attend a wedding in a suburb just south of Chicago.
Great review Jason. Maybe one day I’ll catch up to an OF BB for a decent secondary price. I missed the drawing in my area for it LY. Always this year though.
Another great one, Jason. Well done, sir. Thanks to you and your high quality vids, I now consider myself a scotch and a bourbon guy. Love them both equally. Hey, where did you get the Teeling Pot Still, and what batch is it? Been looking high and low for that one here in WA state w/no luck.
Hey Jason. Just watched your 12 yr blind tasting. Curious why you didn’t choose that Black Saddle 12yr in the background? Much better than the Calumet.
Some of these companies are shifting to a method where they put deep grooves in the staves of the barrel to increase surface area for both Char and flavor. Is this something that you've noticed more as the Bourbons age?
Great rundown! Very interesting results. I'm a huge fan of that new Knob Creek 12 year. Not surprised to see it doing well. Also even though I've only had a couple pours, I've always thought the Weller 12 was a bit overrated. So not surprised to see it near the bottom. Gimme that 107 all day!
Great video Jason. I would love to see you repeat this later this year once they release the Jack Daniel's 12 Year. You may not be able to get another 12 Year B-Day Bourbon, but maybe you could replace it with an Old Rip Lot-B? Knob Creek 12 Jack 12 1792 12 Weller 12 Old Rip Lot B (12 year) and if you could find either a Sam Houston 12 Year or a Calumet Farm 12 Y, that would round out the flight very nicely.
By musty, funky notes, do you mean somewhat of a barnyard note? That is what I get on the 107, but for some reason, not to its detriment. Thanks for this blind shootout. Ironically, the only one I have is the Weller 12. $46CAD. Bought 2 but shoulda bought way more. Cheers Jason
Do you think some of what you were tasting may have been that the bourbon you tasted the last was the lowest proof? Maybe that had something to do with why it tasted more Okie and less sweet?
Still haven't tasted the W12 but finally saw 3 bottles on the shelf two months ago @ $300 each. 😄🤑 Someday someone will buy them!! Not sure if I'd spend over $75. Cheers!! FYI = I'm very happy with Rebel Yell SiB 10 year for a great wheater @ $60.
Loved the line up of 12 yr. My choice of drinks is scotch, but I do have about 20 bottles of bourbon and enjoy drinking them on occasion. Great review.
This is gonna be good! Though I gotta say Jason C, every time I hear about a fight amongst 12 year olds I can’t help but think back to the days of youtube when the pewds had legions of 12 year olds fighting for him XD
you left out Elijah Craig Barrel proof, I like it better than the Knob Creek. Even enjoyed the KC 120 proof better than the 12 year, would definitely spend the $60 on EC Barrel proof over KC
Walked past the 2018 Old Forster 3x's lol Now I wish I had brought it #ROFL The 1792 explanation has taught me what oak is so thank you. Got that bottle, and could never figure out that taste. Just picked up the 12 Knob Creek, after seeing it 2x's in the store. Said what the hell, and grabbed it! The others I don't have or even have seen in the store. #594th Thumbs up!
I'd love to see a r i only video. I'm not a real kind of sewer of rye, but I do enjoy the right Rye with a great dark cigar. I love the pepper Enos and spiciness the compliments the strength of a real high end quality super premium cigar.
All that vanilla you identified in every one of those Bourbons except the first one. Calumet is a vanilla bomb. Surprised you rather dogged the Calumet out. That is my fave!
The prices this guy is calling out woukd be a dream out here in nyc. 70 dollars for a knob 12? What? 12 weller 150? Lol. Special reserve goes for about 80-90 here. Insane.

KC store picks are so good for the 💰
I’ve got a couple 11’s 12 and 14
Yes they are. the 12 year KC at 100 proof is interesting. Definitely a more vanilla flavor profile for me.

Just picked up the 12 Knob Creek, after seeing it 2x's in the store. Said what the hell, and grabbed it! The others I don't have or even have seen in the store. #594th Thumbs up!
Calumet, is definitely a Heaven Hill product.
There was definitely vanilla but the oak on the back end was bitter and funky. Not that it's a bad thing..just not my thing. Cheers!
The prices this guy is calling out woukd be a dream out here in nyc. 70 dollars for a knob 12? What? 12 weller 150? Lol. Special reserve goes for about 80-90 here. Insane.
Where's the ECBP????? It is12 years.....
Seeing it was barrel proof I thought it would be a bit unfair to include considering all the choices were 100 proof and lower.
@@TheMashandDrum Great video Jason.
I would love to see you repeat this later this year once they release the Jack Daniel's 12 Year. You may not be able to get another 12 Year B-Day Bourbon, but maybe you could replace it with an Old Rip Lot-B?
Knob Creek 12
Jack 12
1792 12
Weller 12
Old Rip Lot B (12 year)
and if you could find either a Sam Houston 12 Year or a Calumet Farm 12 Y, or Black Saddle 12, Lucky Seven 12YR, Evan Williams 12 etc..
