Being a mechanic I suggest a couple packs of steel bb's and handful of 1/4 inch nuts in the tank. Wrap with shipping blankets and 1/2 hour in a concrete mixer! Works best removing rust from old machine fuel tanks! Follow with fuel additives to keep it from rusting again. It also helps keeping the fuel tank topped off. This keeps the tank from drawing moisture from the atmosphere as it kools . Also avoid using metal fuel cans to transfer fuel to your machine. Overtime they wear out on the cap seals and draw moisture overnight!
float control is small lever if you keep the blade angled youl wear out the steering clutch on one side trying to keep it straight if you do much heavy pushing
I once used a process in which you cleaned rust from a gasoline tank with an acid type solution, then mixed an epoxy solution that coated the inside of the tank to prevent future rusting of the inside of the tank. Buy and use a set of wrenches instead of Cresent Wrenches.
Laid Back Living Get a tool tray that holds command wrenches, sockets, screwdrivers, etc. Especially when working on the fuel line fittings, you will not damage the fittings by rounding off the points on the fittings.
Jed…I have an Earlier JD 420C. I would say yours is later as it has the Yellow Stripe. That tag has your Serial Number. And with the Serial number you can find the Year. My guess is 1958. And you have 6 gears. I have the same gas pickup issues on mine. As that top part gets clogged. Looks like it has been converted to 12V with a Delco Alternator. I did that upgrade to mine. That lever you asked about on the Blade control, is to let the blade float.
I discovered your channel looking for videos on old 420 crawlers. That's quite an operation y'all have. Keep it up. Don't let the "experts" discourage you. Youve got more ambition than most people. You and the missus take care!
Nice 420-C! I have one also, fun little machine. For your dirty/rusty fuel problem I would suggest to add a 1" piece of 1/4" copper pipe at the inlet of your sediment bowl inside the tank. This will prevent the grime at the bottom of the tank to clog the inlet. Steiner tractor sell a small pipe with a screen that will do the same for $8,00 or so. To clean the tank, old fuel and a handful of washer and nut with a good shake will do the trick or wrap the tank in an old blanket and let tumble in a concrete mixer work awesome. I'm personally not a big fan of tank sealer, they eventually peel and make a new problem again. Have fun, J. F.
I have a 8n tractor that the tank was terrible, would come clean ,so I put swimming pool acid in it filled with water swished it around let it set and looked like new on inside. then I bought a sealer from the parts house and just followed instruction. It has been over a year still no problem.
Got an old tractor was doing the same thing, I took the bowl off, put a fitting in the tank & just use 1/4” inline filters. Jeff Bezos sells them cheap!

@@LaidBackLiving You can strap the fuel tank to a tractor tire and drive around and really loosen things up,then you clean and liner paint the tank.
Nothing better than a black lab spotter! Love It!!
Enjoy watching your video and love the bulldozer
such a good thing to be mechanically inclined. You save so much money and time. Looks good

We use to do that to our rusty truck tanks in high school. The adjustable is more convenient when all the tools are stored away!

Good to see the progress is still coming along! I’ve watched all the videos and may have missed it but the water well situation was cleared up??
Not exactly but we’re making it work. We have one that is clean that is only a trickle. The 2nd is about 5 gal/min but very dirty and silty.
