- I live in England so rain is the norm but I like the open air too, so I've built a Roof which covers my yard and at the flick of a toggle switch retracts back over the garage. I should have done this ages ago as its fantastic and with the addition of the rain sensor I can leave it open knowing if it rains it will shut itself.

I hope you had the roof checked for Harry Bestos before you removed the sheets Colin! To the best of my knowledge, corrugated cement roof sheets almost always have asbestos in them! Keep up the great work!

COLIN....is see 2 clear problems here. Firstly you should have used rubber/nylon washers on top of the Plexy panels to stop any water ingress . Secondly, and most definitely the more serious problem...you have actually made something useful!!!! xD Great work as usual.
Yah, that would have probably been a good idea. Though I don't think he's THAT concerned about water infiltration given that is an outdoor space. He just wants to be able to assemble things outside without getting rained on.
Any water leaking through the plexi will be minuscule, and mold isn't really an issue since it's not a complex layered assembly that could trap moisture.
The usage of the nylon washers was merely a leader to the main point i.e something useful! xD :)
No need, the zinc plated fixings and the black steel will be a rusted mess in no time. You could see the bearings had started to rust before the thing was even fitted.
Always use galvanised or stainless steel fixings outside (whichever is most suitable for the materials you're fixing). And use galvanised steel and lots of cold gal paint if you don't like the rusted look and the stains that go with it.

Mr. Furze, please consider the installation of a subterranean thermal heat exchanger. In England one must excavate probably ten feet plus or minus, but if anyone can do it, it is YOU. Besides, it will save you money when winter comes and if your summers are too long, it will cool your house. All you need to do is plug it into a heat exchanger and viola. THEN and only then consider solar.
Okay... SURELY I'm not the only one that wants to know what his misses thinks (if he has one, pretty sure he does) of these ideas and what her reaction is when they're done... I mean, COME ON... Destroyed the back yard to put in a bunker, has had a giant propeller propelled swing in his yard, the giant Iron Man Hulk Buster and now a motorized roof between the old shed and the work shed... Killer stuff but one has to wonder! Haha

MY THOUGHTS EXACTLY!!! But he used naked bearings in weather. Turn down some Roller-Skate Wheels (the super tough ones) and taper them to fit your c-channel. makes easy long running wheels a snap. Would be a Single Axis...... plasma cutter, mig-welder ....

Ive been thinking for a few yrs about building a trailer (2m inc. drawbar) to go behind my 4wd (Suzuki Sierra) but i want solar panels and a roof top tent (too short for a hard tent so need a soft one), this'll let me move solar panels out of the way for a soft shell tent and simultaneously put a roof over the kitchen. I cant believe i hadnt thought something as simple as this!

Want a tip? Make some mechanical (a bolt) stops besides the end switches, that way the switch don't break over time. Between switching in end position and the roof stopping, there is some time and mechanical load on the switches. By making a mechanical stop, you protect your switches. 😀

I do a lot of 3D printing, and Colin's reasoning on the bearings--and the alternatives of using a rail system--is literally a big part of the benefits to going with a linear rail system over standard rod and linear bearings.

love it used the same roller system on a truck roller bed 3 sections to pull out 8 ft 32 rollers you can load 1000lbs on it full extension the front of the truck will extend the suspension .great work from a shed.

this one is actually really practical. in engineering a seemingly simple concept would usually run ito a million little issues and turn out surprisingly complex.

Yeah it looks like he cut the bolts with a grinder and was wearing SOME PPE later on. A lot of people don't take the danger of clinging spores etc seriously enough. I won't work on the stuff, not even in a big E.T. bodysuit.

When you finished your underground garage you could knock down your ground level garage and workshop and re-purpose build the garage and shed but with large thru doors to get a digger into your garden for the last bit of tunnel 😎

Very cool! :) Another way to get around the close roof tolerance, would have been to use a motor with rubber wheel, and run it against the underside of the frame. Kind of how some motorized bicycles used to be made, with a roller directly against the top of the tire.
