I have to disagree. If someone is really works with animals they will be able to see really big differences, does not matter which studio made CGI animals. If someone make a fake CGI alien interview for example that can really trick people, because there is no source for comparison.

They use green legs or green cloths it is use to capture motion of actor via some advance mocap device may be it's only available or announced in Hollywood industry at that time So using that they may replace the motion of actor to animal they wish Then to create set extention they should have use nuke One more.thing nuke is best compositing software at the time also

Rendering time may be 1500 visual shots each shot can be run in one high ended machine my guess is around 1000 computer
Or if they have render farm or cloud rendere they would have used it
After effect i guess they never use it other than for color correction if necessary or else they may use davinci resolve
Mostly VFX supervisor or editor won't reveal what kind of software they use until it came out as public use
