- If you have a MacBook, stay away from those USB dongles that plug in flush without a cable.
They might look cleaner, but not only do they take up both USB-C ports, they’re also more likely to scratch against your MacBook, all the cords will weigh it down and could damage the internal ports if something bumps against it, and on newer MacBook models, they actually BLOCK ports like the headphone jack and MagSafe charger.
And fun fact: single dock connectors don't exist because they actually can’t meet minimum clearance standards for usb-c ports.
Instead, just get a hub with a cable. You get all the same benefits without the risk, and you can still use it with non-MacBook devices.
Also, for hubs, I would steer clear of cheap “no-name” brands bc they have no reputation to uphold and often just disappear in a year.
Personally, I stick with Anker for these sort of things, but get whatever you want as long as you do your research.

The biggest issue with that dongle is that it overheats, so it needs to be as far away from the laptop as the cable allows.
Yeah I’ve got one and was surprised it gets warm despite just having a keyboard and hdmi cable plugged in. That’s what I get for picking the cheapest one

@@ShinyElGhosteo i bought from anker. It was around $50. It was warm even when single usb-a from a mouse was insterted. I guess it's normal for these hubs. But anyway I didn't feel comfortable with that. Sold the hub and bought a single hdmi adapter and a Bluetooth mouse.

I’ve had a USB dongle for the past two years and I always keep it on my MacBook and not once has it had a scratch
Personally I would just buy a laptop with ports included

@@lonyo5377 I think it's less about it being hard and more about the amount of port it can fit, the only time I've seen a laptop that has a lot of ports would be gaming laptops, but then again Gaming laptop are more chonky than your standard notebook or work laptop hence why they can fit a lot of ports not only on the side but also at the back.
Personally I just buy a laptop with the ports I need already on it.

Saying it’s supposed to include something is non sensical…did the product listing say the MacBook was supposed to include 4 USB-A ports, SD card slot, and HDMI? No…it was purchased knowing it didn’t include those things, so ya can’t really complain about it. If you don’t like the product, don’t buy it.

The problem with this is that it only plugs into 1 port. The reason the other one plugs into 2 so your speeds are way faster
i doubt in real world you will often run into or notice any significant bandwith limitations over 1 usb C port tbh

You will find that for most MacBook models there is 1 thunderbolt controller for both the ports so they share bandwidth, so there is no benifit to plugging into both.

I had the Anker 7 in 1 usb c hub. Problem is that it takes up 20 watts so if u try charging through the hub with a 65W charger, your laptop will only receive 45W which is not worth it. I returned it and bought a UGREEN usb c hub which advertised 60W pass through charging when using a 65W charger which is clearly better that 45W with Anker.
@@bp4_archive yh it works perfectly especially if u have a 45 watt charger like me. I get 40 watts through the hub unlike 25 watts with the anker one. The urgreen one has all the same ports. It’s called Ugreen 7 in 1 usb c hub I highly recommend.

Further more, take the time and learn Linux if you're already a Mac user and know a bit of Unix, if you have the option to use a Linux oriented workflow (not everyone does, I understand that, but a lot do) then it's SO SO SO worth it, ditching the hardware fuckery of Apple and the software fuckery of both Apple and Windows at the same time!
MacBooks are the undisputed best value for money except for gaming.

As a PC enthusiast who started using a MacBook for college. I 100% understand the reason why people are drawn to it. Things like battery life and ease of use. Like yeah you can get better performance laptop but have fun having to be locked to a wall outlet half the day.

I have an onn USB thunderbolt 8port hub I’ve had since last year. I love it, and it even allows me to plug my laptop without a RJ45 into lan!
As someone who has had 2 of the options showed. I got the aukey dongle twice and they both broke in like 6 months. Ive had my anker one for super long and never have had to replace it

I bought a monitor with usb-c support and have 2 usb-a ports on it. When I'm at work I'd plug my mouse and keyboard into the monitor, and then plug the usb-c into my Macbook, which makes it a single cable setup. When I'm off work I don't really need to use the ports anyway.
This is why I use Windows, I don't need to deal with any of this

@@JoeOrber Thanks for the heads-up, but I'm worried about the hardware that you bought like 5 years ago, before this massive USB-C transition. Some people bought dongles for their first-gen iMac. USB-C is gonna be standard, but you need the dongle to connect legacy hardware, like a mouse. That's what I'm worried about.

That was pretty terrible advice. You need to know the port speeds of the macbook you have and match that to a hub that can utilize it fully. On the latest macbooks you are looking at thunderbolt 3 & 4 speeds (3 and 4 are essentially the same speed but there are differences for Windows machines).
