Gary, I am with you on tactical games. I was given a free copy of CC Europe and it has yet to hit my table. I struggle with the fact that it lacks vehicles (tanks but no tanks!). I don't like man-to-man combat games, so usually my lowest level is platoon/company, which I really like. When it comes to squad/individual vehicle level, I still fall back on SPI's Firefight and Raid.
If you are looking for topics, it might be fun to have a series of shows comparing all the games in one particular overrepresented category, like Bulge games, Market Garden games, Normandy games, Stalingrad games, Gettysburg games, Waterloo games, etc.
Bulge? Overrepresented? Never! Only something like 3 new ones coming out in the next year. Barring someone finding a long-lost Panzer Army in the German OOB, the end is usually always the same.
I don't think Triumph and tragedy doesn't teach you much about the history, but I think the system does allow you to experience a feeling of the powderkeg building and not knowing when it will go off, but knowing it probably will go off sooner or later. It doesn't reproduce the history, but it gives you a sense of it. Which i would say is valuable. (I'd say the same about something like time of crisis, but there is even less of a connection there) I would agree with you that Root is way more conceptually inspired by coin than a coin game. There is a concept in Root about the reach of the factions. Factions that project more power and are more about direct control, while other operate way more on the fringes and rely on more insurgent type of ways to assert themselves. One strong thing about Root, but which is also a weakness in comparison to coin. Is that there are 10 factions at this point and you can kind of mix and match up to a point. This gives you a huge amount of flexiblity 9or rather the ambition) to create the conceptual form of some conflicts. (A lot of the root factions are based on something). But because you can mix them they never get so concrete as in coin and inherently you can't really build to interesting and codependant relationships you get in a coin game. It's however a very successful mix between modern wargaming and modern eurogaming which bridges the gap and the theme actually makes it a bigger group of people will actually play it. Not sure it is for everyone, but I think Root might be actually a game that sneakily might have done a lot for wargames. Then again, I think it could be a good gateway.. I am not sure it actually has done that for a lot of people though. And as a third. Consim world is hot garbage and unusable. It's a shame that good info and discussion is just buried there.
After watching this show, I just decided, you know, I love your stuff, you’re a great guy and I find I watch your vids a lot. So I joined as a Patreon. Ty very much for all your time and informative videos!
1775 is actually a favorite of mine... it is light, but great fun... and a pretty quick game. Definitely one you can introduce to non-gamers and they grok it pretty quickly.
The shelves behind me? Those are cheapie Walmart shelves. It's something of a miracle they haven't disintegrated. The RPG stuff is on Ikea Kalkax shelves. The wargames in the game room are on rail shelving that I put up myself.
Honestly it's mostly the personal satisfaction of helping to support a channel you're enjoying and getting value from. But you do also get a fancier title in the Discord sever. And there is a recently included concrete benefit: Swordsman ($5) and up level Patrons get access to my 3D models for counter trays and other wargaming accessories. We're really just getting started with this, but I'm rolling out new models monthly and we'll have a pretty robust library of items for 3D printing before too long.
1:26:30 Fighting Formations gets a lot of love at our local monthly wargame gathering here
1:26:00 If you do COIN the way we do at Origins, there's a lot more Diplomacy in it 😎

22:00 depending on what you have with it, I might be interested in Amazing Engine. It wasn't a bad system
It's really not. Happy to just pass it your way.
A future show discussing war game errata sounds great to me:) Very good show, as always:)

BTW, Gary do yo still have that pristine version of SPI's Battles of Army Group South quad? I would love to buy it from you!
Sold some time ago on behalf of it's actual owner.

What do Patreon subscribers get which RUclips-only watchers don’t?

28 minutes in, before you hit the list? Really?
Get rid of some of your RPGs? Madness! You know you'll regret a couple of years down the line!
