I don't see how hiding the pen solves anything. First of all, Burke is running around town talking about the pen which he's already suspicious about. It won't take long for rumours of his inquiries to get around a small town like that (as we've all seen). Eventually it's going to get back to the residents of Collinwood who have all seen it. It's not exactly a run of the mill pen, so they're going to recognize the description. The next thing you know it's linked back to the house as its last known location as well as where it was found. He thinks he's conned everyone into being quiet, but once they realize the significance of the pen any one of the three who know about it are liable to tell Burke (especially David). Secondly he knows Burke has been searching the beach, so what does he do? He goes & buries it back on the beach! For someone who thinks he's so smart, he really didn't think that through.
