Humans aren’t going anywhere, so they better adapted they get to us (for better or worse), the more likely they will survive going forward. Just sayin.
Why does everyone just discount humans as if we’re strangers on this planet. Animals have substantial impacts on their environment and the ecosystems that they live in by simply doing what they do. We consider that to be a natural and “good” thing and yet when humans have an impact on an ecosystem or an environment, regardless of what they did to cause it or what impact they had, it’s considered to be unnatural and negative. It seems like people believe that we’re supposed to just observe the earth instead of participating in it like every other organism that’s ever existed here before. It’s not something I’m overly upset about or anything and I don’t really even have a point to make other than it’s funny to me that people are so egocentric and self-absorbed that they think that the entire planet exists as something that was built for us to observe and study but not participate in. I wonder if they like the feeling of swimming into wake being created by the boat's rudder? And if that has something to do with why they are drawn in to then mess with the rudder. Like a curious child might break a gadget they have been fiddling with.
Random theory: being attacked by killer whales on a small boat is unsettling. Going faster can even make them attack more. Fear-based countermeasures would be pretty limited in most civilian ships. One thing that most people have is food. Fisherman even have extra food in the form of fish or bait. Throwing food to the whale might not be something most would do unprompted, but getting the whales to stop attacking might seem pretty exceptional for most folks. The idea would be, “the more they focus on the food, the less they will focus on my rudder”. Hell, it’s something I have to admit it would consider trying if I had no idea why they were attacking and what would happen. Anyway, if even a small percentage of folks throw food/fish out, that could encourage them to try it more often (remember too that most attacks happen around noon - lunch time!). One weakness of this theory is that the amount of food would likely be very small compared to a whale. However, the flavors would easily be things that most wild whales would never dream of otherwise tasting. That novelty could be really motivating, especially for younger whales. Anyway, just a thought.
