Wow this is a neat perspective, from the deck just above the coupler! Last time i took a trip on the SIR was back in the early 80s before i moved to Cali, when many of the stations were still wooden: So neat to see the stations having been rebuilt and the whole line refreshed!! I take it the SIR has completely transitioned off of the old block signaling system? I can see the spots where the signals were located with the boxes between the tracks and i see signals near switches, but none were lit Real neat the little speedo in the upper left, that disappeared after awhile i see... Thank you SO MUCH for providing these views!! Lets me see things i cant do from 2k+ miles away!!
I haven't ridden this in about 50 years. I can't believe the B&O color-position signals are still up. The New Dorp Lane grade crossing is long gone, alas. When I was growing up in Borough Park, Brooklyn, on a summer night with my windows open, if the wind was blowing just the right way, I could hear the faint wailing of train horns signalling for it so many miles away. Now I'm living in suburban Philly and get awakened many mornings by SEPTA trains bellowing for Rydal Road at 06:30.
I grew up on the Island back in the 1960s. I borrowed my Dad's car (65 Corvair) and my girlfriend and I were out cruising and had to stop at the New Dorp crossing. I had my mind on other things and stopped a little too far. The gate came down and it settled on the car's hood! It didn't bounce and didn't scratch it. LOL That was on the old SIRT line that I rode every day in High School from Grasmere to Monsignor Farrell HS. I now live in upstate NY 45 miles NE from Syracuse on 10 acres. Cheers, Bob
ik I haven't been in Staten Island especially the Railway for years but I never realized the overpasses for Nassau and Atlantic finally closed down after being redundant. Heard they were still around long after the platforms were closed off
Yea same I've only rode the SIR once before this video. Also I was reading comments on other videos about the staten island railway and I saw a few that said the overpasses were still there but those comments were from 4 months ago. So I'm assuming they tore them down just recently at beginning of this year 2022
I know the overpasses have been locked off since ~2019 from personal experience but I haven't gone south of my home stop recently enough to realize they were razed
It sounded like there were one or more bad wheels on this train. What a strange sound. Before this video I watched your video of the express train from 96th Street to Coney Island. I enjoyed both of these videos.
Yep the train had flat wheels plus a dead motor because the train had no audible propulsion! Next time when I record the tottenville express hopefully I get a better trainset Thanks for watching 👍
Another great train ride by Morgan! What is that huge black building next to the Stapleton (?) stop on the right? A lot of changes since I left the Island in Nov 1965. Cheers
Does St. George Terminal really need that many platforms? Maybe they can all be replaced by one wide island platform and the line can curve west and RCB Ballpark could be restored. That way, St. George can become a through-station rather than being separated with a wye like Hoboken on PATH. This is because the line could continue north of the island as it used to go there.
The Ballpark Station is literally 200 feet west of St. George Terminal and was a complete waste. Fully 95% of SI train and bus riders go through St. George. The old North Shore line is dead and ripped up in many spots and ain’t never coming back. Any $$ should go to new trains, buses and station improvements for the current MTA properties.
@@edwardp3502 Yeah, maybe you’re right. I was outraged when certain station renovations, such as the ESI lacked accessibility upgrades. I guess restoring any abandoned line, such as the Rockaway Beach Branch can wait.
There is a small plate at the front of these trains but the reason it's showing is because I placed the camera a bit too much towards the back of the plate. In My recent video of the SIR I placed it at a better angle
Considering all the "budget shortfalls" this line appears to be beautifully run and maintained. A real treasure for the NY Transit thanks to the B&O RR for its construction. One question what was that black super rusted iron plate at the bottom of the pictures?

It was just OKAY. There was actually alot of swinging side to side in many parts of the ride like you mentioned, but it does run at decent speeds. BTW there is horn at 10:24 and 41:12
The train to nowhere ! Imagine if these clowns actually finished the subway connection 4th avenue subway in the 1920's and then again the IND second system ? BTW. retired motorman 'B' division. Operated the R44s on the A line , loved them....
Yeah it would've been awesome if all 5 boroughs were all connected as one system. This line seems redundant considering all of the bus lines all over staten island, and that's awesome that you were once a motormen! In the near future I might apply to become one
If you look closely you could actually see them, but its just ramps going towards the platform on each side so no elevators. You can't see Tottenvilles or St. Georges ramp in this video though so only 3/5. In total there's only 5 accessible stations on the whole line: Tottenville, Arthur Kill, Great Kills, Dongan Hills, and St. George. I don't think they care enough to add more accessible stations XD
The other trains all seem to be modern ones but the floor platform on this one looks to be quite old. Do theyuse one old train for nostalgia. Never been on the SIRT.
it is because there used a few other train lines before they were abandoned and tore down. Now there's only this line left and they only utilize 4 tracks maximum even though there is around 12 lol
Thanks man! Its called digihud speedometer. Usually works fine but it was a bit inaccurate here for some reason. I'm not sure if its on iPhone (If you even have an iphone)
They say it takes a certain type of person to be a (good) bus driver. Does the occupation of subway train conductor attract a certain type(s) of employee?
Why can't the Staten Island Railway be converted into a New York City Subway and a new connection between Staten Island and Brooklyn, or even between Staten island and Manhattan?
That work was started almost 100 years ago actually but it got cancelled due to it being too expensive. An alternate universe probably has all 5 boroughs united as one superior transit system but sadly we're not in that and we're stuck by using buses or a boat to get into staten island. They should really reconsider it :(
