My mother played this piece in the 1950's before arthritis stole her music away at age 35. But I remember her passion-- even as she played through the pain. I was about 9 when she stopped. (She lived to 87!)But her love for music put me on a 49-year career as a performer, writer, producer........ as well as Dad's big-band he led before he went into the AA Corps in 1940..........Many stories!

right? I love her more than anyone else (only except for Horowitz) because of the detail and how her music speaks to the soul. It's so neat and everything is in the details. I just can't get enough of her. She is the sole reason I'm still playing the piano today after 14 years. I gave up twice but picked up 4 years ago (I was 14, so quite old to start catching up tbh) when I heard her play the 3rd movement of Tempest. Truly amazing and inspirational. I am currently working on the Rage over a Lost Penny and practicing hard on Pischna technical studies for my muscles. Hopefully one day I can play La Campanella like her!

Most contemporary pianists, unfortunately play Chopin's music too fast, the essence of harmony gets diffused by the clatter of the keyboard's action, Valentina in this video plays a very moderate and appropriate tempo for this piece, that demonstrates the cheer elegance of this composition, sensible approach from this pianist, a very enjoyable experience listening to miss Lisitsa.

Op. is for 'Opus', it is a method by which composers assign a number to catalogue a set of compositions - It helps to identify individual pieces. Remember that an Opus number is NOT a good indicator of the chronological order in which these compositions were produced, nor do they bear a logical relationship to the order in which the works were written. To achieve better sales, publishers and budding composers gave early works much higher opus numbers than their chronological order would merit.

Fantastic Valentina... !!! I love her interpretations of Chopin and Beethoven's music. She really understands these composers and plays their music in such natural and flowing manner. There's something really magical to her touch and interpretations and I can't even describe it. She can stroke the keys like it was a purring cat and at the same time, she can play with so much bravery and expression as if she was taming a wild beast. She's one of the most talented modern pianists. Invitation to Poland...

This seems like it would be exceedingly difficult to play, and yet, she plays it so confidently and so precisely. This is probably the most impressive part about the human brain, in my humble opinion.

Beautiful playing! Beautiful song! I started playing piano because of your videos. I am now also inspired and deeply involved with classical music. I finally have an understanding of the stories being told in these timeless exquisite gems.. So wonderful and life changing :) The age of miracle is 33 years old. I have found my miracle in my 33rd year alive, which I estimate is only 1/3 of my life’s. Now I have this miracle to learn for another 66 years! Or so...

I have heard this work at least 1,000 times performed by 100 different pianists, and for me the gold standard has always been Artur Rubinstein's Italian recordings from the late 1950s for RCA. But today, I can honestly say that I have heard, for the first time in 40 years, a fresh, vibrant and -- with the delicate yet explosively dramatic coda -- stunning performance that breaks the mold. Ms. Lisitsa, you manage to bring something new to these warhorses in a way that is without equal. Brava!
