When Edgar Davids and Gennaro Gattuso faced each other in intense Serie A matches, the atmosphere was typically electric and filled with anticipation. These encounters were characterized by fierce battles for control of the midfield, tough tackles, and a high level of competitiveness.

Referees who f*cking run the whole thing and even shut up guys like gattuso - and almost every tackle nowadays a direct yellow card. Reminds one of what playing football really feels like: adrenaline + pain 😮👍

Ladies and gentlemen, this is football, it has ugly/dirty part and beauty part. Players foul each other hard, and they help each other to get up. Its not what you can see nowadays.
And people often commented football players are soft, look again. Those that you saw in serie A back in 90s, the days you got 1 or 2 of these fouls and if you ever complains to the ref, the ref will ask you to shutup and getup, and if you roll on ground like freaking donut, the manager probably gonna bench you for the next half season.
E Davids is probably one of the most skillful player back then, yet he is the one to handle the dirty job toe to toe with player like Gattuso, he foul him hard, and take his challenges the same way. This is only the beauty part, bet you havent seen and probably wont get to see the ugliest part

Pitbull literally got his ass kicked in a real fight by Cosmin Contra down in the tunnels after a preseason friendly match between Milan and Juve in 2002 or something like that when both of the players were sent off because of a tension build up that made them foul each other hard every time they got the chance to be near one another during the game.

Long time without hearing that name, Cosmin Contra. Rumanian, right? I think at some point he played for Atlético. Rumanians were a great side in the 90s and early 2000s. So did he beat the Pittbull? Man, Davids was/is a force to be reckoned. You had to be tough to beat that guy. Great overall footballer. I think he was one of the most complete players, he could do everything well, attacking and especially defending. Probably one of the greatest in history. Had he won a World Cup with the dutch and played in a more attacking position probably would be remember as such.

The racist Romanian never played for Milan ever again and was bombed out of Italian football in disgrace , many years later Contra would talk to the English press calling Davids a psychopath , Contra certainly gave the impression he kicked nobody's ass that day , he ran in away into the Milan dressing room , a below average player that almost everybody's forgotten about and a racist with little to no legacy.

@@joshuastam7704 Oh yes he did - There's an article in the Gazzeta dello Sport archive from 1st of August 2002 written by Andrea Schianti about this incident and i'll use the google translate to paste here what it says : "Davids waits for Contra right in the middle of the tunnel and attacks him. Pushes, punches, kicks, spits. There is no way to keep them still, the Dutch and the Romanian. They are on the ground, they beat each other like savages. Some security officers try to intervene, but they can't do anything. A few more steps, more insults. Now Davids and Contra are in front of the Inter locker room and here the worst happens. Punches, slaps, kicks: they give them a good reason. Try to get in the middle of Ferrara, but who can stop these two exalted? Their eyes are sticking out of their heads, they don't think anymore. Montero and Abbiati try to keep their respective companions still, but they can't. Milan team manager Silvano Ramaccioni and Juventus Alessio Secco also try to divide Davids and Contra. These are moments of absolute tension, and whoever witnesses the scene is an impotent spectator. The security guards, about half an hour later, still have a shocked face as they report what happened. When finally, but at least five minutes have passed, everything seems to return to normal, the signs of an absurd battle remain. There are traces of blood on the floor in front of the Inter dressing room. A Milan player, who tried to intervene, shakes his head in shock and says that Davids is in really bad shape: he seems to have a large wound above his left eye. Even the police officers who were on the sidelines immediately moved inside to quell the brawl. And they are the ones who confirm that there have been moments of great tension and great fear." I would put the link also but RUclips will delete my comment since it will think i'm spamming something. But you can find it if you go to wikipedia Italia search for Cosmin Contra and look for the note with the link where Davids is mentioned.

I'm Milan fan and I remember very well each time we played against Juve in those years, this was the fight we all were expecting. Lots of draws, once 'won' Davids and I was disappointed. But now watching the highlights I see the truth. Actually Gattuso was playing hard but correctly and for the ball. Davids wasn't at all. He should have had a second yellow card already after the second clash and leave the match. You see Gattuso calmly call for it and the refery always going against him when he should have kicked out Mr. D.... But in Italy we all know why, and also Gattuso clearly understood it during the match: in those years you couldn't go against the Moggi-Bettega-Giraudo almighty football power and control and that night, as long as several other times, was shown

I am sorry if I offend anyone, but since the Barca's dominance with Guardiola, football started getting softer and lost its character. More theatrics were accepted and even encouraged, referees apparently "protected" the star players. I remember Platinni stating that UEFA would protect the stars as a general policy.
