Always remember my dad telling me of his experience, the family had not long moved in on Maltravers road, he was just going out, closing the front door behind him, when a land mine was dropped close by, he never saw it, just remembered waking up inside the house, the blast knocked him back through the open door, he always joked a minute later he would have closed and locked the door
My Gran, talked about it quite often she worked English Steel, lije many other women, she only ever talked about the camaraderie and the things they got up to, one of her favourite stories were repeatedly nipping someone's ear lobe until it was numb, then pushing through a hot darning needle,, well even then you had to be fashionable pierced ears! Used to have a few photos of the women that worked there, mo idea what happened to the photos. I think the kindest thing to say, is they looked very formidable ladies, not ones you would pick an argument with!
Thank you for posting this!! I'm trying to learn as much as I can about this time in history.
