  • In this series of videos, we will explore analog computing and build our own analog computer. This will be done by using the well-known electrical component called the operational amplifier (or op amp for short).
    However, to begin designing an analog computer we must first distinguish it's counterpart--the digital computer. To do that, we must look at analog and digital signals and their applications. We go through the op amp differentiator and the planimeter to see analog devices. Hopefully, you will enjoy this new series.

    the lag... the pixelation.... I worked with an analog scope, was it a HP or something... I quickly rushed and got myself a 80's Hitachi as a backup.
    I hate when people claim analog like vinyl are better than CD, or hipsters of the worst kind prefer cassetes over a well compressed MP3. ( ears trained on pop music and cheap apple earbuds ndlr)
    but on the logic, analog computing is interesting by certain aspects. As people talk more and more about quantum computing, this is the closest thing. the Nike computer has been in the missile defense for decades in the army, while there was transistor and even the first microprocessor computers, but it was more for streams of data and realtime where a digital computer would take minutes to detect a potential attack or incoming missile.
    The op-amp approahc is intresting, since virtuall every logic gate can be reproduced. not with the FPU precision of a digital CPU sure, but still... intresting.
    Finally, animal brain IS an analogue computer.

      Analog/vinyl can still function when the power's out.

      In truth Analog computations are limitless, they would technically have an infinitely high FLOPS statistic and would have infinite storage. It's not that Analog is shitty, it's because our science isn't advanced enough to take advantage of Analog systems, due to noise and coding issues

    An analog computer can be designed to be multifunctional however though possible to do just through analog circuits the best way to do it would be to make a digital analog hybrid computer kinda like a brain or have the analog side to computation and digital for changing mode of operation and organization. Analog computers have also shown to be excellent and many times more efficient at processing artificial intelligence and pattern recognition. Future computers are not going to be purely digital or analog but instead something in between.

    great video, dude! I was expecting you to try the integrator circuit first because that's the more "famous" one and equally well demonstrates how analog signal processing works with OPAMPS (and I could be completely wrong, but also a little easier to stabilize?). Anyways, could you tell me what OPAMP IC you're using? Surely not the basic 741 right ? I'm a broke college student and cannot afford expensive power supplies so any idea on a "user friendly" opamp that's easy to power with a 5V line (say via Arduino or even a basic battery) ?

    why do we need op-amp to realize differentiation or integration? we can simply do it by passive circuit right? What is the advantage?

    • @Blackwhite2277
      @Blackwhite2277 2 года назад

      Think of an input signal of 1V. Integrate it with respect to time, and you get a linear increasing function of the input voltage. How can you obtain a higher voltage with mere passive elements? The op amps do all the work. Also, I recommend you to read about negative feedback. Hope this helps :)

    Sorry for the unnecessary joke at 1:27. I don't know why I thought it was a good idea. Very offensive, and I'll take the blame for that one. It won't happen again. Sorry everyone.

      It was a joke. It was funny. No need to apologize. All humor risks being offensive, and if we don't take risks, then we risk losing something more important then being inoffensive. Fun.
