  • Built by the Romans and considered one of Britain's most "outrageous" roads, it's filled with sharp hairpin turns and is the width of a bridleway. Hardknott Pass in England's north-west Lake District is, technically, the most direct route from the central Lake District to West Cumbria, but it is so steep and difficult that outsiders are often warned to take hour-long detours to avoid braving its twisting, single-track slalom up a mountainside. It was described as one of Britain's "most outrageous roads" by The Guardian, and locals are full of tales of cars suffering brake failures, drivers freezing with the challenge and of skids and misjudgements causing cars to plunge off the narrow carriageway.
This leaves some asking: should this extraordinary 13-mile stretch between the towns of Boot and Ambleside be closed to traffic - or celebrated as a national treasure? The road becomes especially dangerous for the brakes on a couple of particularly steep turns, and it's one of the most challenging sections of road in England. It's said to be the steepest road in England with a gradient of 1 in 3

I went over there in 1973 on my 650 cc Triumph sidecar outfit loaded with camping gear, no problem, apart from stalled VW type 2 camper vans stuck on the steepest corners.

Followed an A35 van East to West over the pass some years ago, both the van and the Sierra I was driving coped quite easily.

You found this difficult in a Land Rover...? Well I did it in my measly Ford Fiesta 1.0L Titanium with no 4WD option, and apart from stalling once because of someone coming downhill (driver error, lifted the clutch a bit to high, too soon) the car handled the two passes with ease.
As for the Roman Road, a quick look on an OS Map will show that the modern one isn't exactly on the same alignment, apparently they did know better lol!!
Great video by the way - but invest in a dashcam, less shaky results.

I did it in my Ford transit. Such a beautiful pass. Amazing countryside.
