Thank goodness someone else thinks exactly what I do. What confuses me the most is the stealing the bit from alien 4. Possibly the most hated bit of any alien movie. It's a weird choice. But yeah, I went to see it with 2 of my mates and we're all between 40-50. One was indifferent/accepting, the other thought it was pretty good and I hated it. I said when leaving the cinema and discussing it with them just like you. If you took all the bits of Alien, Aliens, Alien 4 and Alien isolation out what have you got left? The characters sneaking past face hungers silently? Which is straight out of Don't breath. And them floating past Acid? which is just okay I guess. The ratings are very confusing. It's like you say audiences are just too accepting nowadays. It's depressing.

Yes, they went overboard with the nostalgia of past alien movies. The alien/xenomorph/engineer creature was creepy, for me, though. The way it looked, sounded and moved. Even the dastardly smile of the creature, as well. I noticed that when the creature was getting the black goo from it's mother, the tail was gradually growing. I believe that the facehuggers were not the original facehuggers. These ones were created in the laboratory. The facehuggers were in the laboratory pouches. Hence, they move faster and have a faster embryonic stage from embryo to chestburster. Great review of alien romulus.

When we see it in the movie, its in tortoise mode.
    This means, in space terms,
even after being yeeted with rocket engines 20yrs ago,
The Alien is still next door to LV426. Definitely same solar system probably no further than Saturn / Uranus are from us.

Hi Michael, I had the exact same reaction to this film. All the critics, even those I kinda respected until now, fell over themselves praising this movie. I was in the cinema on Saturday after its release, looking forward to a good movie and I hadn't been to a cinema for..3 or 4 YEARS and what I got was a subpar movie, full of stupid teenagers in space, a boring plot, plotholes everywhere and as you said they sprinkled Alien, Aliens and Alien 4 in it, plus the stupid lines from the old movies that didn't really fit. They didn't even adhere to their own established rules (Even the gravity reset at the end didn't work as established in the movie earlier).
We started with boring (my cinema-neighbor actually fell asleep in the first 30minutes), proceeded with meh and ended with Alien 4 weirdness. This is AT BEST a 5/10 movie. There is NOTHING in here that justifies the praise this movie is getting. Compared to Alien and Aliens this is barely AvP 2-level of movie competency.
The only "good" scene was when the pregnant girl was stupid enough to fall down into the cargo hold, while fleeing from the alien. It was Prometheus-level stupidity and I laughed out loud at this scene.
I have no idea what people/critics see in this crap, but this was dogshit and the praise is not warranted. Its just another dumb alien movie that is not even in the same corner of the galaxy as Alien and Aliens. My constant feelings while seeing the reviews praising it: "Dude did we see the same movie?"
How low do your expectations need to be to see this as a "good" movies? Are these people high or something?
Please guys, we don't ask for much, for crying out loud, make a movie following the audiobook Alien: Out of the Shadows. THAT I would pay to see, not this unimaginative crap.

Good and thorough review. I can tell you analyzed this movie deeply and I certainly understand the perspective. And it gets me thinking about my original thoughts on this movie.
Personally I had a different experience. But I'm aware I'm not a typical Alien fan. And I didn't really analyse the "nostalgia baits" like some fans did.
I loved the original Alien, but I didn't like any of the sequels. Not even Aliens (Unpopular opinion). I thought it started to become a campy action franchise right after the original movie. So that was my perspective going into this as well.
But I was pleasantly surprised it brought back the horror elements that made the original Alien good for me. That's the thing I want from these movies.
It didn't show much of the xenomorph until the ending sequences. The timing relates closely to the original Alien. And I was quite impressed with the production reflecting that. It felt like it took place next to the original movie.
The cast felt pretty expendable though, I'll say that. Besides the robot and his sister, I didn't care for any of them. That's something the original Alien did better.
Romulus imo has some flaws. But overall I enjoyed it much more than any other sequel. Sad to hear it was yet another let-down for you. But understandable.
    Cheers!

Actually I read an interesting comment under Drinkers review and this comment was right on the nose: "It felt like an AI wrote this script". That is actually a real possibility. Feed an AI with the Alien movie scripts and a few of the games and let is generate a new script. That would explain why there are these lines in it and so many of the same scenes and tropes, down to some weird ass hybrid like in Resurrection at the end. This would make MUCH more sense than this script being written by a human. An AI cannot create something really creative, its all deviations of the same thing and that is exactly what we got here. A brown soup of a plot points, scenes and dialogue, gobbled together with bits and pieces from the old movies/games. There is NOTHING original in it.

  • @Horror_Collector4Life

That's why I'm out of it when it comes to Movies these days, because if I'm really want nostalgia so bad then I just watch the previous films that I grew up with and that's it. I don't need a new Alien film to keep my love for these franchises alive, the same goes for Terminator, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and Halloween, they are so dead and boring to watch and that's been for decades now so just stop it.
I mean, we don't live in the 70s, 80s and 90s anymore. All of these films that we love so much were products of their time and films like Alien don't fit in with today's times in my opinion, so it's okay if a franchise dies and you can keep the older films in honor just as much.
It has become so BS and difficult these days for a film to still excite me but ultimately I want to see new films with an original story where I can also identify with the characters and that seems impossible when you can't make money with it and the audience celebrates it anyway as long as the images are epic and brutal enough.
I find myself more and more finding that an older film that I watch for the first time can inspire me more than what Disney and co have served me and that says everything about today's film landscape.

I saw this after a hellish week of work, and I liked it. Is it better than the OG? I don't think so. But it's way better than Prometheus and Alien Covenant and even Prey. Like the one decent scene in Prey was the field fight scene and that's it. Granted I like the lead chick but she's way better in other stuff. Here? I liked the production design, the soundtrack is cool. I liked the lead chick (at least the actress isn't a dumbass and actually respects the original films and seems nice in interviews) and the android Andy's sibling type relationship, which in my book, that was the strongest part of the whole film. I didn't mind the Kay chick but I hated everyone else aside from the three I mentioned. The story itself was ok but it's basically Don't Breathe mixed with Alien. I hated the CGI on Ash or Rook or whatever it was called. Let Ian Holm rest in peace and stop putting CGI of dead actors and actresses in film. It's disgusting! Also that "Get away from her you b***h!" line made me roll my eyes and go "What?!" at the end. Like I enjoyed the film aside from the problems I had with the film. Glad to hear your thoughts man. Yeah this movie doesn't really flow with Aliens at all. If they wanted to biologically breakdown the alien into a miracle pathogen for humans, then why did they setup the civilian colony on LV-426 in the first place around the same time the events in this film was happening? Why wouldn't they just make it a science lab with only scientists?

The impression given from Aliens, is that the company weren't aware of the derelict on LV-426, until Ripley told them about it, and Burke sent an order for the colonists to investigate it. In the novelisation of Alien by Alan Dean Foster, I'm pretty sure Dallas (or someone from the Nostromo landing party) deactivates the beacon, so it's no longer transmitting. In any case, it seemed the company were not aware of it at time of setting up the colony there.

LV-426 was one of many worlds that were being terra formed.
On the other hand, if they were aware, why didn't they retrieve another egg from the derelict rather than trying to find the alien somewhere in deep space? (Alien Romulus).

Regarding your bird in the cave comment, and it being ridiculous because they can actually provide oxygen to people as shown in the movie. Consider this: in the US healthcare is private and costs so much it puts people into bankruptcy. Meanwhile much poorer nations have free complete healthcare. So it’s clearly possible, but society chooses not to because of lobbying and unintelligent voting. Isn’t this
equally ridiculous? Agree with you about the movie, it’s flawed 🎉

I 100% agree with you. Alien Romulus is the most pointless Alien film ever made.

Same is forgivable if the standard is on a par (or, unlikely I know, surpassed) the original idea. These Star Wars/ Alien rip-offs are about as authentic to the originals as pod people are to authentic humans. Modern film makers know the words but don't hear the music.

Another shitty alien film. I’m so surprised! 🙄
Seriously I’m not surprised. I had no hope for this and so far I’ve been proven right from what I heard. And of course just couple days ago I had an argument in the comments of a post on Instagram where I said I had no confidence in the new alien film and said I’ve been burned too many times and I think the director Fede Álvarez is so overrated and this guy gets offended by my comment telling me “who hurt you” and then goes on to tell me how good this director is and how good the evil dead remake was. Well guess what dude you won’t change my mind! Fede Álvarez is an overrated director and alien romulus, evil dead, and don’t breathe aren’t that good. Get over it.

Of all those films, I would say Alien Romulus is easily the worst.

They have to copy and paste for it to be good. Look at the star wars 2015 it was a copy of first star wars, and it was the most palatable one. After that it was a shit show

@@kingston4313 Perhaps the least bad Disney one was Rogue One, and that was boring to watch. But I mean least bad by it actually involving something slightly less copy paste. But Romulus
Reminds me a lot of the Star Trek Reboot. Dumps a lot of action to distract you while it copy pasted a lot from previous Alien movies.

I saw it at the movies, i fell asleep in the beginning, from where the android was getting picked on, up to when they finally were getting into shit w the facehuggers...the movie was ight imo but kinda sucked too in that yes, the movie looked good but there were dumb, annoying and copied from part 1 2 n resurrection. I only have that romulus was better than covenant imo and thats it. Aliens is one of my favorite movies and also my favorite alien movie, i like resurrection as well, for its look, the cast, and action and that booty shot 😆
    Favorite to least/hate
    Aliens
    Alien Resurrection
    Prometheus
Alien (its the best in the first viewings but loses luster for me, after)
    Alien3
    Romulus
    Covenant

Robert Meyer Burnett's RANT on this movie was pretty much perfect IMO. There were aspects of this movie that I did enjoy, but, they relied way too much on nostalgia and the only character I cared about was Andy. The majority of this movie was super forgettable and in a month I doubt most people will still be talking about it.

Maybe there is s upcoming director with talent and imagination but it would be at cross purposes for them to try to invigorate a franchise. Someone like that would want to create their own movie precisely because they are unique and talented. Sequels by their very nature are mostly thankless jobs. There are exceptions but yeah, why create someone else's dream instead of your own?

I will never understand the blind praise im hearing for Romulus. Everyone is praising Romulus for exact same issues that they constantly trash Prometheus and Covenant.
The characters are flat and forgettable. The writing for them is nonexistent most of the time. The acting is completely dispassionate... or talentless, however you want to look at it.
The fan service is completely inappropriate for a serious Alien film. Not even Resurrection stooped so low as to directly quote better, better movies in the franchise. As a fan, the "Get away from her you b****" line was completely insulting. How or why would they try to cheapen Ripleys glorious moment in Aliens??
This is how i rank the franchise:
    Aliens
    Alien
    Prometheus
    Alien Covenant
    Alien Resurrection
    AVP
    Alien Romulus
    Alien 3
    AVP: Requiem
