This was a great analysis. That 5th spot is really gonna come down to who’s the most consistent at trials. DiCello/Chiles/Carey are definitely the top contenders for that spot and they’re gonna need a Skinner/McCallum 2021 trials type competition. The only thing that worries me is Jade’s floor scores. If Jade doesn’t get a 14+ on floor, I don’t think she’ll make the team cuz team USA needs a high floor score.

Yeah, the thing that I think about when it comes to Jade is her artistry. Yes, she’s an absolutely phenomenal tumbler, but her artistry is really lacking and she’ll get hammered for that internationally. That’s why I think it’s very possible that Jordan could take her place. Jordan’s performance quality is unmatched when it comes to dance and audience engagement which would help her a lot in Paris. People tend to forget that she won vault silver at 2022 worlds and 2023 Pan Ams and scored higher than Jade and Andrade on floor at the 2022 world championships. She’s better than people give her credit for. It’s a real tossup between Jade and Jordan for me. I just want them both to make the team 😭

This seems to be the common opinion. I think the video is laid out well. I definitely agree with Simone and shilese being locks if they’re healthy (this has been the case for awhile) and with her vault upgrade, as long as she hits her routines (because she is known a bit for inconsistency or not hitting beam), skye is close to a lock. My personal opinion differs when the suni discussion comes up because most people I’ve seen think she is close to a lock solely because of her beam score. Her beam is phenomenal and adds a lot but I believe the US doesn’t want to bring someone for only one event, so we’ll have to see how her bars (hopefully she’s upgraded) goes at trials before she seems like a lock imo. I also think jade very much should be on the team; she’s the reigning Olympic gold medalist on floor and her vault is probably number 2 in the US after Simone. I think she’s been judged more harshly than other girls so I’m not sure how the numbers will play out at trials, but I absolutely think jade should be on the team and she contributes a lot. If suni has a solid bars routine I think she makes sense, but I could see Kayla/Jordan/Leanne potentially getting that spot if suni doesn’t look great at trials. We’ll see what happens! There are definitely people who think Kaliyah Lincoln should make the team (over jade) due to her floor scores. There are lots of great options and lots of great team combos… I’ll be sad no matter what because I’m rooting for more than five girls 😂

The questions in my mind are, Skye hasn't always hit internationally so could she consistently hit when it matters, and would it make more sense to have the last spot go to Kayla or Leanne instead of Jade, or should the last spot go to someone else who doesn't have as much (or any) experience internationally? For alternates, I'd pick one solid AA that's experienced internationally and one less experienced AA who could lead next quad.

For me just based on everything through nationals:
    1) Biles: the GOAT
    2) Jones: assuming not being at nationals because of shoulder was more precautionary than something serious
    3) Blakely: hit 8 for 8 at nationals and that Cheng just changed the whole conversation on her part (still want to see he go 8 for 8 at trials because of past falls at World Championships)
    4) Lee: would love to see her upgrade her bars just a tad bit more at trials even if it isn’t her full difficulty that she brings out at the Olympic
    5) Chiles: she is that gymnast for the most part you can plug in anywhere and expect a good and useable score (yes I know she feel on beam and floor at nationals so I want to see her go 8 for 8
Order of who can knock someone else off this teams:
    1) Carey: needs to upgrade her floor and hit at least 14.000 both nights of trials. If she does that, I would put her in instead of Chiles. Having 3 chengs during team finals is clutch. If she brings back the Amanar at trials, how can you leave off the 3rd best vaulter in the world (behind Biles and Andrade)
    2) DiCello: A lot like Chiles, she can be plugged in anywhere but probably slightly lower score than Chiles. Also has had mistakes like Chiles so she really needs to have the best 2 nights of her career and have Chiles, Carey, or even Blakely have 1 or 2 bad nights
    3) Wong: cut and paste like Chiles and DiCello. Needs a bit higher D scores
    4) Rivera: long shot because she is so inexperienced but has shown potential to be a solid gymnast

I usually like Laurent and Cecille's routine construction but they really dropped the ball with Jordan's floor. Jordan either needed a Cheng or a competitive floor and she has neither rn. She needs to get her stamina up so she can do a fourth pass and get another D+ skill that will get credited everytime. Her tumbling is the cleanest part of her routine and always has been - why they would give her a three-pass routine is genuinely beyond me.

    • @cocoroni1031

Because Jordan scored lower with a 4-pass routine. 3-pass is fine like Shilese has a 6-6.1D if all get credited. Count it lucky that Jade doesn't have a wolf turn otherwise her D score will go at least .2 higher.

@@cocoroni1031 We cannot be comparing Shi to Jordan though in terms of artistry and dance elements lets be fr... of course Shi has a three-pass routine bc she does two turns that are E and D and most of the time are credited and gorgeous. Jordan has a wonky (wonky is generous btw) D turn that gets credited half the time and the D leap is literally never rotated. For many gymnasts, a 3-routine pass is great, but not power gymnasts who struggle on dance elements like Jordan. There's a reason Simone and Rebecca have four passes - and even so, both of them are far better at dance elements than Jordan.

@@drew-ih7bx I'm not comparing. I just make the point that three pass is fine for Jordan. She can't control landings with 4 passes, so 3 pass is her optimal routine construction.
Simone and Rebeca do four passes because unlike gymternet's crazy deduction on tumbling, FIG is very kind on tumbling form. But big steps can still destroy E score, so not everyone is suitable to do 4 passes. One need landing control and stamina to do 4 passes.

The FACT is, you have to pick a team and the ones who show up and do their best over these last two competitions in particular are the ones that SHOULD and WILL make the team. There is NO WAY the US could cater for a Simone mental breakdown because there is NO ONE who can really replace or fill in for her across a WHOLE team competition and that was evident in Tokyo.
So, the team must be made up of a number of gymnasts who collectively WITHOUT Simone can carry the team to gold. This is the ONLY scenario that needs to be considered because ANYONE ELSE can be replaced and subbed for and the gold will still be secured.
Simone's issue in Paris, among other things, had to do with the fact that winning gold was OVERYLY dependent on her. She alone on that team had an Amanar/Cheng and a 6+floor. She alone would have had to go up on all the apparatuses practically carrying the team on her shoulders. That was TOO MUCH. It is VERY important therefore that the selection committee does not make the same mistake as was made for Tokyo. It is best that they have THREE Chengs on the team and any two combination from the list of Shilese, Suni, Jordan, Kayla and Kaliya would be enough. If we are considering a scenario where Simone once again cannot fulfill her role then a team of Shilese, Skye, Jade and Suni should still be able to take the US home.

My concern about the 4 Ss is that they have known issues that could potentially make them withdraw from key events or even from the entire competition. Jordan's risk of that isn't any higher than anyone else's; the 4 Ss each have a risk of that.
As a direct comparison, when Jordan fell on beam in quals at 2022 worlds, Chellsie gave her the choice of competing beam for team final, or skipping it if she didn't think she could do it. Jordan said she could do it, and she went on to nail it. When Skye fell in quals at 2023 worlds, she did not compete beam in the team final. I don't know if Chellsie gave her the same choice, but that means that someone didn't have confidence in Skye's resilience, either Chellsie or Skye herself. Jordan has proven herself extremely resilient.
Shi, Suni, and Simone are also very resilient, but each of them has known health issues (mental health in Simone's case) that are at risk of flaring. If Shilese's shoulder flare is completely healed by trials, then that would assuage my concern some.

I have a hard time seeing Jade making this team. Though we are looking at 2 event specialists and not a Mykayla or Madison 1 event specialist, I just don't see the US taking what is essentially 2 specialists. Suni will be the specialist, and then there will be 4 all arounders. My bet is Simone and Shilese (obvious locks), Suni barring a meltdown on beam, then the final 2 will be whichever of Skye, Jordan, and Kayla makes it through trials without mistakes.

There is no need for a 5th all arounder who barely adds something but doesn't have medal potential. Suni can cover two events, and she's a good all arounder now. USAG would be stupid to not think about individual medals.

As it stands now they need a strong vaulter and floor worker it’s currently where they are at their weakest and unless they want a repeat of 2021 I doubt they’ll leave Jade off of the team especially if she completely upgrades those two events because having her on the team with high scores on vault floor will pretty much guarantee that they will take gold it’s pointless taking another all rounder when you already have two of them on the team the last three spots need to go to those who will likely medal in the individual events and who will bring the highest scores

If you consider Suni an AAer, then you have to consider Jade one as well. Suni right now is in only cause of her beam. Her bars are good, but in line with Skye, Jordan, and Kayla's.
Everyone keeps talking about Jade's scoring, but she was just passed by Skye on vault, and Skye, Kayla, and Jordan all posted a higher score on floor than Jade with Kayla beating her overall. Jade is up there, but in the mix of the other contenders. She doesn't have a standout score like Suni does on beam. I know Jade is planning on some upgrades, but she hasn't done them yet and proven she will get those scores she needs.
I don't think she is completely out, but do think she needs help from others.

@@hollym1821 Suni's bars is better than Skye and Kayla let be fr. Skye only got 14.1 - 14.2 at 2023 worlds, and Kayla has so many built-in deductions on her bars.
Also, Jade is NOT surpassed by Skye and Jordan on floor. Both Skye and Jordan's floors were inflated by at least 0.5. Kayla's 5.7D floor is maxed and has no medal potential when Flavia upgrades to 5.9 or Sabrina upgrades to 6.1.

@@surgeon1016 They don't need Jade on the team to GUARANTEE gold but what she brings will go a LONG WAY in ENSURING it. People don't understand that it is was the THREE AMANARS in London is what set team USA up for victory and it is because the US only had ONE in Tokyo is why everything went down hill after Simone lost her spatial awareness. The US needs to get back to its traditional strength on floor and vault in particular. When your starting and ending points are great then what happens in the middle will not affect the outcome too much.
